View Full Version : Best Portable Fighters

I did a "portable fighters" search, and 11 matches came up, none of which seemed like what I was looking for.

I recently got the bug to play hand held fighters, ala SF2, etc...

I have a PSP (which I'd rather not use for actual games, but homebrews), a Nintendo DS (which I don't believe HAS any fighters, but please tell me otherwise), and my Gameboy Advance.

For GBA, I have recently ordered SF2 Turbo: Revival, which I look forward to. I will probably also pick up SF Alpha 3 for GBA, since it looks so fricking impressive.

What else is out there? Specifically, 2d, 1 on 1, (or 2v2 tag :) ), and preferably with fun stuff to unlock.

If you want some handheld fighting action, I'd suggest a NGPC. It's the best system for portable fighting games - King of Fighters R2, SNK vs Capcom, Gals Fighters, Last Blade, Samurai Showdowns etc...

There are some good fighters for the DS, but they are, as far as I know, only available in Japan. I'm talking about Bleach and Dragon Ball.

Hmm, I'll have to look into getting one. You can have save games, etc?

Also, does anybody remember where these were being sold, cheaply?

Thanks! :)

Edit: To be honest, I think that the level of detail, graphics, etc, would be a put-off with the NGPC:

I figured that would be the case. I wish that they would release a big Capcom vs. SNK game on the DS. I'd love that so much.

I just wish I knew of more for the GBA...

the NGPC d-pad/psuedo stick is gold for fighting games (same design as the NGCD pad). you may still be able to find the blister packed NGPC with 4 games around if you do a little hunting. if you can find one for under 50 bucks, its well worth it.

Guilty Gear XX#Reload for the PSP is awesome. Bleach DS is good too. But I think Tekken: Dark Resurrection (June 26th) will take the portable fighting game crown. Looks so nice, and if it plays anything like the arcade version it will be the best Tekken console game yet.

STAY AWAY from Mortal Kombat and Tekken on the GBA. That's about all I can tell you. :P

SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millenium is the best portable fighter period. All of the other NGPC fighers are good as well. For GBA, I enjoyed MK: Deadly Alliance and SF3A, but thats about it.

Get a NGPC with Match of the Millenium. You should be able to get a loose cart and system for less than $30 shipped I would think. It is a massive game with tons of stuff to unlock. It may not be up to par with PSP/GBA graphics, but they aren't bad and they do just fine for such a great game.

I heard that Drill Dozer for the GBA is pretty good...

Yeah, the NGPC definitely is the best for fighters.

I've heard good things about a SF2 on GBA and SFAlpha3 on PSP as well though. The microswitched joystick thing on the NeoGeo Pocket is excellent though and although I only have KoF-R2, I just know the other fighters are also going to be excellent - and in fact I want a few of them

Thats not a fighting game. Its an action/adventure.

MK: Deadly Alliance and MK: Tournament Edition for the GBA are both great. They play much more like Street Fighter than other MK games (which is a "good thing" in my opinion). There's a lot of modes, a lot of stuff to unlock, and, like I said, it feels more like a 3d-ish Street Fighter than a MK game.

Please don't let the graphics put you off getting a Neo Geo Pocket. If you want portable fighters, there is no better choice. While the sprites are simple, the animation in Neo Pocket games is very smooth and control is flawless. As others have said, Match Of The Millenium is a phenomenal fighting game, one of the best *EVER*, portable or otherwise. A hell of a lot better than the Capcom Vs. SNK games that Capcom released on the NAOMI or SNK Vs Capcom Chaos on the MVS. The Neo Pocket Last Blade game is also really great, I actually like it better than Match Of The Millenium just because I prefer that more strategic style of fighter; it's actually two games in one since you can play through the Last Blade 2 storyline and characters after you beat the game the first time. Gals Fighters is the third Neo Pocket fighter that deserves attention, despite the fact that it's often overlooked. It plays somewhat like King Of Fighters (talking gameplay, not the way the battles are set up), but better in my opinion than either of the actual King Of Fighters games on the Neo Pocket. Not that the King Of Fighters games are bad actually, but Gals Fighters is better.

Thanks to all who replied!

Now all I have to do is find a NGPC with those games. I find these 6 packs and 10 packs on eBay, none of which have Match of the Millenium, and many of which simply has "10 assorted NGPC games." Grr...

I'm glad you've decided to go for a NGPC. You will be impressed, trust me. The graphics, especially the characters, might not look like much in pictures but you need to see them running. I really love the Chibi/SD style that's used on all the fighters. It fits with the system well and those little 3 colour sprites have more animation and personality than many full size fighters.

Any hey, you can also get both Metal Slugs, Neo Turf Masters and Sonic.

Hehe, i 2nd Mortal Kombat Advance. The controllers sux so the movement isnt smooth.

Guilty Gear X for GBA isnt half bad either. I only played it for 10 min and got the same background all the time (hell or something). It was alittle dark so it was sometimes hard to see the movements to the fighteres. Im sure there are other backgrounds too so its probly better there.

Mortal Kombat Advance is horrible (although it was done in about ten weeks of development, which is quite a feat regardless how it turned out). MK:DA and MK:TE are pretty good. The first time I played Tekken on GBA (I never played Tekken on the ps1/2), I beat the game in about twenty minutes using essentially the same move over and over.
