Hey All,
I have contacted a guy that has one of those old "World of Nintendo" display cases. I am sure many people have seen them before, including people that have them that are members of this site. He lives about 8 hours away from me and was going to drive there tomorrow morning to pick it up.
Before I did I had a couple questions first though.
1. This is at least one of the "OFFICIAL" nintendo display cases, that was in the world of nintendo store right.
2. Does anyone on here own one that has any info on it, and if they like it or not?
3. Is $350 a good deal for it?
Any help, opinions, or info would be great, THANKS! :D http://shutter04.pictures.aol.com/data/pictures/03/009/3B/FF/AE/C8/ZR+99NF3uXWA--zrmgD16ZiHOTTF+NUi01E0.jpg

You have to think, you couldn't buy or build a case like that for $350.. well okay you could build one but it would come out around that same price. Take that and then add that it's a 20 or so year old store fixture, and one that many people desire.

I think I have the top of that showcase. Is there anything else that looks like that?

I prolly wouldn't since the cost of gas would be high too.

No, but if he wasn't in a tremendous hurry he might get one quite a bit closer.
I've seen a few over the past few years on ebay and such.

These don't come up that frequently and, even then, finding one within 500 miles of one's location compounds the difficulty. They have sold for less than the quoted price, I'm thinking $250 is a fair price (coming from someone who has watched these sell), but again one must ask how close it is and how long you are willing to wait. I wouldn't go any higher, especially with the drive ahead of you.

I worked for the company that makes just about all of the Nintendo P-O-P displays. Sorry to say that I was witness to dozens upon dozens of these and similar display cases and various other Nintendo P-O-P items being destroyed to make room in the warehouse for N64 and then Gamecube displays. If I remember correctly, $350 was in the neighborhood of the original cost.

Yeah, I just found that the trip would be 12 hours away, and with me driving a full size suv that will be in the 200-300 dollar range in gas, easiy with the recent price jump in gas.
i already told the person I would take the sign for $350, I don't know what to do now because I never intended to spend upwards of $700 for this (Includes gas).
So would it not be right of me to call him up and say, well I will still buy it but only for like $250 now instead of $350??
I hate to do that because we agreed on $350, but gas and food will make the total trip $700 or so.

I would just apologize and pass on it for now.
I know this is an extreme example, but I missed out on 2 of these "given" away locally for a total of $50.
I don't think they're that uncommon.

I don't know. Those cases are pretty awesome and I'd love to have one chilling in a gaming room. $350 doesn't sound like a lot to me considering desks and all that I look at are a good $500 or more. Plus this one is old and is authentic, not a remake or some home project built to sell. On top of that you get the signs and it's still intact and looks like really good condition. I say go with it if you can because I wouldn't pass it up (even if they are common I don't see them much around here for trade).

You're better off being completely up front with the seller. Let him know that you aren't going to buy it after all. If he asks why you can tell him about the gas, etc. At that point, he may or may not offer to knock the price down some, but you definitely shouldn't bring it up first after you already agreed on the price.

Yes he does, I do remember seeing it in the game rooms section here. I tried accessing it the other day but a page showed up saying you couldn't view them now.
I am pretty sure someone else on here has one, I am also looking for a Gameboy version of this kind of case. It's alot smaller than this one though!

Well I wouldn't just call him up and say 250 OR NO DEAL!!
I mean I would explain to him my situation and be nice about it. But I definately wouldn't wait for him to say something, this might be a once in a lifetime chance to get one in this great condition!

Oh yeah, I definately would have if I didn't get it! I would rather someone here on digitpress to get it than just somebody on ebay!!!
I picked it up in Gering, Nebraska and I live in St. Louis, MO. Total drive was 12.5 hours!
And as people have said before, these signs might be plentiful around them, but unfortunately I NEVER see these anywhere, even on ebay I don't see them.
I will say it will be a while until I make a trip like that though, I make long trips all the time, but not that damn far.

Nope, none at all. If I would have paid more than $250 for the sign, then add on the $240 in gas I might have. But since I got the sign lowered $100 I thinks its far. Espcailly since this baby is in GREAT GREAT condition! Its really amazing in places really how nice it still is.
I will say its still really dusty in places which I can't wait to get started cleaning it! It also need new locks and lights.
By the way, does anyone on here know where to get these kind of locks?

I'd also like to know that info too, as I had to remove the locks from my storage cabinets since there were no keys.
That's a nice cabinet, I kinda wish I had something like that myself. You seem happy with it, and that's all that matters. But 12.5 hours, yikes!

I'd check with a local high school janitor. All those trophy cases have locks like that and they are certain to know where to get one and janitors are some of the nicest/most helpful people in an entire school.

Lowes and/or Home Depot for the locks. I just replaced the locks on a Game Boy display using locks purchased at Lowes. They have several types for glass cases. Each should be under $10.

Hmmm, I am pretty sure they are not the same kind as arcade cash doors, there would have to be a different setup with the locks so when I do lock it, it holds the door together.
I have ordered from happs before, maybe they do have them though.
As someone mentioned earlier though, I am pretty sure they are like trophy glass case locks. Hopefully lowes or HD will have them.

I have been very busy and will try and post pics of it tonight! I haven't cleaned it yet and is VERY VERY dusty in places, and in some places so its looks completely brand new.

Welp here are some pics of it in my basement. The people I had purchased it from probably had it in their garage for who knows how long. Thats the last time this case though will be put outside! (It will have a great home to live in:) )

And here is the picture of the back board in the top glass display. I guess the only problem I will have with this is I now have to buy I guess some kind of racks that fit into the backboard, then find somekind of glass shelve. (I guess I don't have to use glass, put it will look best with glass!)

So me and my girlfriend rode with this baby in her moms SUV for 12.5 hours each way. I DID NOT seperate the 2 pieces until I got home. So on the way home, I was basically riding with the steering wheel on my chest. It wasn't a pleasant ride. I brought rope and plastic in case in rained to have the thing hanging outside and just close the back hatch as much as possible, but decided against it.
So when I got home, my friend from down the street and my brother helped me bring this inside. My friend pat is the one that found out that we could seperate the two pieces, that was the only way to fit it through the door. Surprising even though the whole thing is a beast, only 2 fucking screws attach the top piece and the bottom metal cabinet together. This is good to know because if your not carefull you will really screw the thing up moving it.
Other than it being really dusty and a few things missing, like the locks, it is awesome! I just need some opinions on how to clean this thing without damaging it. Of course windex for the glass, but what about the metal bottom, and the top part is mostly black plastic wood type stuff.
Any help of that would be greatly appreciated!!!
:D

Great find! Such a cabinet is PERFECT to way to display a collection. Got mine locally for $50! but ended up having to pay about $100 to have it moved to my appartment. You see, I was SO worried that another collector from my city would try to snag it so I bought it and picked it up using a local moving company about 4 hours after the for sale ad was made :) I even had to ditch work just to get the dam thing!
Anyway, I've always been looking for one of these cause I collect sealed NES games (although my interest has dropped recently :/ ) This is the BEST way to display new NES games :)
Do you have both panels of glass ? I should update my cabinet photo as I've done alot of work on it. I had to buy whats called a "style track" for the second panel of glass (not seen in photo). This is the bottom metal bracket that allows the glass to slide back and forth. The width of each panel should be 2ft while the thickness is a standard 6mm. I recommend using WD40 on the wheels of the style track as it allows the glass panel to move more smoothly. If you don't have the glass panels I recommend you get them made. I love how the enclosed cabinet keeps the dust of my games!!!! My last fixup will be to find one of those locks that were used to keep the panels from opening.
Have fun with your great find !
Mr.Faxanadu
04-21-2006, 01:48 PM
Ok so I looked over your photos and noticed you have both panels..... it's been a long day -_-
Anyway, like I said before: use WD40 on the wheels that are on the tracks (just a small amount). I cleaned mine with fantastic and a Mr. Clean eraser for the tough marks. Your's seems to be a newer version probably late 90's.
The lock shouldn't be a big deal at all. I found out that 6mm thick glass is a standard for store disply cabinets. I'm sure your local locksmith store will have those display cabinet locks.
Have fun with the cleanup :)

Yeah, exactly, I can't wait to finally be able to display my Sealed games and systems! Right now they are just resting in their respective protective cases, so can't wait to get them on display.
I would have been in the same shoes u were when getting yours, if I would have had to, I would have rented a U-Haul truck to get this! I mean I was worried someone else was going to get this, and I was a couple states away.
I am lucky because most of the stuff is still with it, that original came on the case. I am not sure about the tracking wheels thing. For some reason I don't know if mine has them, it just looks like it's metal on metal sliding it, but it is pretty smooth. I guess using the wd-40 you have to be pretty careful with it, the last thing I want is that shit running everywhere on my case! :)
What do you use to clean the back wood, and the case itself? Any help is SO SO SO greatly appreciated in this matter, I don't want to use something that will ruin the cabinet once i use it.
(Also, you do need to post some updated pics, would love to see them!)

For locks, if you want to keep things original, don't simply replace them as many do - it will usually cost just as much or not more as the better option.
Don't go to a Wal-Mart or home center, don't ask someone that uses similar cases, don't waste your time with a specialty order and hope for the best. Go to a LOCKSMITH. I know, it's seems obvious but until someone brings it up you don't even think of it. Take the lock mechanisms out and bring them in, if they can't be removed then bring in the SMALLEST part you can get down to around them (a door, etc.). Most locksmith / custom alarm stores will have a flat rate you pay to get a lock keyed. Simply tell them what it's from (they will ask) and leave it with them. A couple days later they'll give you a call - it will usually run you around $30 to get the lock keyed and have a pair of keys made.
More exotic mechanisms will take longer. For instance I removed the lock and release mechanism from my vintage pachinko machine when I was restoring it and took it to a local locksmith and alarm store to get it keyed. The machine was manufactured in 1972 and has a non-standard lock as things go now days. It took them three days but they did an excellent job - $30 later I have a keyed vintage machine with the original lock.
*continues to read the thread in the other tab*
...oh, you don't have the locks at all. Still go to a locksmith and get them there - will ensure that you get a perfect fit.
Use a SMALL amount of 3-in-1 oil for door lubrication, on a rag or cotton swab.

Yeah, I have never seen these kind of locks at your local wa;-mart, or even home depot. I am going to be taking it to a locksmith, if there is even one around here.
I'll look it up in the phone book.
Is 3in1 oil already a thing itself, or do you mix it or something. And are you talking the sliding glass door lubrication?

For cleaning any bad scuffs on the plastics or the metal parts I used a Mr.Clean magic eraser BUT I MADE SURE TO TEST AN AREA FIRST to make sure it doesn't remove the paint. For example, I use these erasers to clean my NES systems but I go around the red Nintendo lable on the front of the system because these erasers remove that paint!!! I also used this eraser on the side wood panels. It did a great job of getting rid of bad scuffs. I also used it on my Xevious arcade cabinet with no problems.
For the glass I used a razor blade to get rid of any tape. Then used Windex. No problems here!
It's funny cause the girl I bought my unit off of was using the thing as a makeup vanity X_x She had a mirror up where all the shelves were and stored all her makeup in the bottom section
It took me a gopod 4 magic erasers to clean the thing !

Yeah, that's the thing Im most worried about, trying to clean it and then it completely fucking up the paint or something like that. I would also like to get something that not only cleans but also treats the wood, metal, etc. while I'm cleaning it. I've never tried those magic erasers before but am going to the store tonight to pick one up to see how it works.
Ooh, that hurts thinking yours was used as a make-up vanity! I guess there's nothing bad about it, it just makes me crazy thinking it was used for that! At least though it wasn't stored in some shed with total water damage. (I've seen pics of these before that looked like they sat through years of flooding or something)

Have you ever thought of adding a light to the bottom part too? I know I have but don't know if I'll bother eventually or not. But anyways, your case looks awesome!!

Your updated pic looks so damn good! Are the top row of nes games your sealed ones, they look like it?
Have you ever thought of adding a light to the bottom part too? I know I have but don't know if I'll bother eventually or not. But anyways, your case looks awesome!!
I haven't even looked on the inside where the top light is to see if it lists the measurements of the bulb. I need a new bulb and there isn't one in there to look off of. Do you happen to know the measurements off hand?
Sorry but my bulb hasn't needed replaceing yet. I would think it's just your standard fluorcent bulb. Ya, most of my sealed games are long the top. Man, I love the look of the cabinet at night with all the lights on :-P Everytime I have friends down and they walk by my computer room they stop and are in awe! Post some pics when you finished filling your cabinet !!!!! Have fun!

Oh yeah, i myself find it kinda fun fixing and cleaning up something, like this display case for example that I own, and then finally being able to put all my stuff in it! It's the perfect thing for my sealed collection and systems because right now there just in my closet in their protective bags and cases, just sitting there. This case will prevent all the dust from accumulating. (I assume that after a few months though doesn't some dust get in there)
I also forgot to ask, did your shelves come with it. Mine has NONE, so am kinda worried where to get them. I would rather have glass ones, but anything I will be happy with if it comes down to it.

The cabinet is pretty much maintence free. After a couple of years I've noticed a SMALL amount of dust that must have crept in the gap between the side and front class panels.
That sucks that yours didn't come with the shelves. They're black metal shelves that hook onto a pegboard using 2 J shaped hooks. You would place the 2 J hooks where ever on the pegboard and then hook the shelve onto the curved end of the J. Surprisingly they can support a lot of weight!
If you need help with the shleves maybe I can take a pick of one of them. Not sure about glass shleves cause the weight may be too much.

They do look nice but I dont think they would not hold/fit all my boxed NES games.
Mr nintendo you still need to head down to my store!
1 thing everyone need to be careful with is fading boxes from the sun hitting them in the display cases or a bright light bulb in your cases. I have been collection for a long time and see this often happen to the old boxes. Also keep an eye out for old Kmart closing I got a giant box of the slider plastic holders that say nintendo on them that lock into the back of those display cases peg board.

Oh yeah, there is no way I would leave the light on in the case for an extended amount of time. It is only a flourecent bulb so would take longer to fade than a regular bulb would, but am going to take no chances, espcailly since I am going to put my sealed games in there! I just want the bulb in there to make it complete.
And yes, I DO NEED TO get down to your store! Actually though, I went from going game hunting at least 3 days a week, to zero days lately because of me being busy. But I will make it to there soon hopefully though! What's your address again?

Yeah, that would be awesome of you!
And yes, with all the weight of the games and such, glass shelving would be way too heavy probably!
