View Full Version : June 1st marks the end of PSX and N64

Thats right, all EB and Gamestop stores as of June 1st are going to STOP taking in trades of N64 and PSX games. We were told this last week during our spring relay by our manager. The N64 and PSX games that are currently in stock will just dwindle down to nothing, marking the end.

This will make it even harder to find PSX and N64 carts. Better get em while you can!

I might care if I ever went to these stores before. Actually, there's not much in the way of either library I'm actively seeking but perhaps I'll pop in at my local EB store the next time I'm at the mall. Maybe I'll make that my "End of EB Games" day... :D

The N64 I dont mind so much, but the PSX makes me sad. I've found lots of great games at an EB and a Gamestop nearby, including Metal Slug X, Bust a Groove, DDR, Erghiez, and many more.

I knew this was coming, but didn't think it would be so soon.

Are the prices going down on all of the leftover stock, or are they just going to sit until they are gone, or are they going to ship them all off like they did with SNES and Genesis?

It's too bad really, I just picked up an N64 and an PSX in the past 6 months. At my EB we seem to do a pretty brisk business in N64 and PSX games, WAY more than a certain movie format.

N64 I can understand, but PSX? The games are playable on a currently supported system. And won't the PS3 still play PSX games?

I dunno. One less reason for me to go to either of those stores.

Bummer, but I've got almost all the N64 games I've wanted to add to my collection, so it's no huge loss for me.

That really sucks. The PS1 area is the first section I always go to whenever I step inside of a Gamestop or EB store. Now that they won't be there any longer, doesn't really give me a reason to shop there.

Just don't understand why they'd stop selling PS1 games. If they could carry NES stuff for so long, why can't they hold onto the PS1 for a couple more years? Especially when the PS2 (and PS3) are backwards compatible. Doesn't make any sense to me.

This is exactly why I go to Gamecrazy. I mean GC still sells NES games!!!!

They also have game Gear, PS1, Genesis, Sega CD, Saturn, N64, All types of Game Boy games, and more types of games!

This makes me miss Funcoland more than ever.

I'm there with you.

I only venture into those game stores to see what they have for Gameboys, N64, Playstation, and to see what very little amount of new games they had on the shelves for Gamecube. Now that they won't carry the other 2 there's absolutely no reason I should venture into their stores. So many pawn shops, thrift stores, and other independent used game stores are near me that EB and Gamestop lost most of my business awhile back due to their higher prices. Plus most of them have idiots and complete jerks behind the counter that seem to know nothing but the newest releases and can't hold a conversation worth crap (better off talking to the wall). Absolutely no gaming roots in there at all.

I always have to laugh when I go to my local EB Games (which is very rare anymore to begin with) because one of the main clerks has a thick English accent. I always wonder "How the hell did someone from Great Britain wind up in Steubenville, Ohio?"

This actually makes me happy. I hope they cut the prices severely on both systems as of June 1st. I have 2 EB's and 1 brand new GS nearby. The GS has tons of cool RPG's for the PS1 that they got when they opened up. not many have been sold so far. On top of that, I've finally gotten the urge to collect some N64 games, and I know that the 2 EB games, while having poor PS1 selections, have some pretty decent N64 games that are just too pricey ATM.

Not all that much longer, most of their locations are way too small to run all the stock into the next generation and any Dreamcast, Saturn, SCD, PS1, and Gameboy / Gameboy Color stuff is done with once the distribution channel dries up.

Anyway, rare is it that I even come across PS1 games at a Gamestop or EB anymore aside from 5,000 copies of the latest RPG reprint. I somehow came across a complete copy of Parasite Eve and a copy of Klonoa Door to Phantomile missing the booklet in my last few visits to a Gamestop but rare is it I buy anything. I usually just go in, look around, shake my head how half the store is DVD's and action figures, and leave. I almost wrote it off completely as I bought a copy of Krazy Ivan which I KNEW the longbox and manual were in the back and the ass at the counter wouldn't go check. I heard their manager the day before, all the longboxes were put in the back room so the rack with the PS1 games would look more uniform.

Considering that GameCrazy has been running on the fumes of their retrogames for over a year now (since that first 3 for $15 sale) and most stores still have a healthy selection coming from their distribution channels, it's no reason to panic. If anything maybe Gamestop / EB will get their prices in order.

Ditto. Both of those stores are worthless (in my area anyway) when it comes to any used games, old or new. Only 15% of the PS1 games even have cases, let alone instructions. Don't even get me started on the N64 games.

EB employee "let's see, the surface area of a N64 game is roughly 3" by 1.5", where is the biggest sticker I can find to put on that game"? "Muwahhh ha ha ha."

I rarely go into those stores too, they are pretty useless it's really all DVDs and toys and some games, and their PS1 and N64 game selection is aweful. When I do find something decent it's way too expensive and is usually missing the book or rear insert. I asked some employee why they still take games that are in such bad shape and so scratched and he told me OH well, games still play when they re scratched to crap so we still buy them and they sell anyway. Talk about brainwashed, I can't hold a conversation with them either. Talk about a company going lame, Duhhh! guys buy stuff in good shape and watch how much better it sells!!

I figure they could atleast resurface the things, concidering how much stuff they get the expense of such a machine would pay off, and the current prices would seem a little more fair. Nothing like paying $17 for a scratched to hell and a missing instruction book greatest hit title that can be had for $20 new (and not OPENED) at any other retailer, like Best Buy.

Honestly, the only good deals I got at EB were on DVD's and CD's and the one at the mall here doesn't even carry CD's anymore. :(

The condition of thier newer games (Xbox in my case) borders on insulting some times. $25 for a game with a missing and/or torn to hell manual? Hello Ebay, what do you have?

As for the PSX and N64...well my feelings on the N64 are known, however the EB here has had the same PSX games on its little tiny rack for almost a year.

Most of the ones around here don't even have PS stuff in them anymore. Hell they started to carry Genny and NES stuff again, but no PS/N64 stuff.

Not a drastic change as to what i'm currently experiencing or have been experiencing for the last year and a half.

I agree completely. Seems somewhat daft to me, especially considering how much money companies like GameStop can make off the PSX re-releases of in-demand titles. Maybe they only mean to buy the rereleases from the manufacturer?

But then I realized that I haven't even gone in there since they stoped carrying NES and threw out their boxes for their N64 games (at all the EB's in my area).
Whatever, just one less reason for me to go in there.

I am hoping it will be a 50% sale!

I do. I got Ghost in the Shell for PS1 at Gamestop last Tuesday. I bought numerous N64 games there over the past year.

This whole June 1st thing is a travesty. Dropping the Saturn stuff was upsetting. Dropping 8 bit and 16 bit games was bad enough. Dropping N64 and PS1 games is utter lunacy.

My EB Games shop in the mall (Daytona Beach, FL) just sucks. The last time I went there was for checking out their games, and a lady from Nintendo was doing this Donkey Kong drum contest (to see who gets the highest score). Of course I didn't do it but my brother purchase a used copy of MGS3. While my brother paying for the game, the cherk was trying to make me buy a PSP because "it's cool!" I had my Neo Geo Pocket with me and I flashed it out. "OMG, that's old, you really don't have taste in video games!" "Oh really?" After that my brother told me to stop and I left the store (after he paided for the game). This was couple of months ago!

The last time I purchase a game there was Castle Shikigami 2, and that was Winter 2004! O_O

In my small city (not Daytona), we have a retro gaming store that sells from Atari to 360 games. They have a good collection of games (Phantasy Star 2, Jet Grind Raido, and more), but the prices for them are just off the roof ($29.99 for a used Jet Grind Raido anyone?) x_x

In NZ, almost all the EB's are under totally piss poor management.

As such prices for both used and new goods are exceedingly high, while the selection is shockingly low.

Back before I knew what I was doing, when I just started collecting PS stuff [3 years ago], I bought a few used things from EB. Ever since I got a brain I avoid them and stick to pawn shops.

I noticed a woman and her kids picking out N64 games during the B2G1 sale, and I buy N64 and PlayStation games whenever I see something I want that's cheap and in good shape (PSX stuff has to be complete though). In fact, I just bought a complete copy of Test Drive 5 (PSX) at a GameStop last week.

Anyways, this is a bummer but we all knew it was coming. I'm glad that I have most of the PSX and N64 games I want. Most of the GameStops and EBs around here don't have that many N64 games anymore. PlayStation is a different story, but as is the case everywhere, many of them are loose and in bad shape.

This does have one plus side though: I'll be looking forward to getting some stuff when GS starts marking the games down to clear them out.

GameStop/EB's PS1 section has always sucked ass anyway. 95% of their PS1 games are missing their original case and inserts, instead having a broken up old case with the name of the game written on it in permanent marker. Then the disc itself is scratched to hell, and they're all tossed carelessly into a rack.

The only time I found a PS1 game worth buying at GameStop was when someone traded in a used set of Spyro collector's edition copies. They were complete, in original cases, with no scratches. I was impressed.

Many of the discs I've gotten from GameStop have been fine (not my Resident Evil GC discs, though, ugh), but yeah, they're terrible with cases and inserts. They usually mess up the reprints something terrible, though (there's cracks on the reprints I've picked out, plus deep box cutter/razor marks along the top ridged edge from cutting the holo sticker).

What happened to GAME stores? EB and GameStop are useless crap to me now. Really you can't even find somewhat harder to find current gen titles at these locations and they are cutting out PS1 and N64 now?

Would you shop at a movie store that only carried movies less than 5 years old? Hell no. Would you shop at a music store that only carried CDs (nevermind LPs) that were less than 5 years old? Hell no.

What makes them think in their right minds that I won't just go to Best Buy? The selection is comparable.

I just don't get it.

Fully agreed.

The closest gamestop in my area is like 75 miles away @_@ but it has had a decent selection of PSX games up until the launch of the 360 and it is actually a decent store overall , well for PS2 to Xbox360 games and accessories anyway and is far better than any other Gamestop ive been to.

But as far as EB games go THEY ARE TERRIBLE and it makes any REAL gamer laugh ( or cry) when they walk into their stores I know I have a good chuckle everytime I see the condition of even NEW games not to mention how they "kept" the older PSone and N64 games ....THE HORROR...THE HORROR O_O

and as far as the so-called "game" clerks that work at 90% of these stores I would suggest calling them CLERKS and not Game Clerks as most are not gamers and many know next to nothing about the product they sell.

AND THEY CERTAINLY DONT GIVE A SHIT about providing quality merchandise to sell- I.E. scratched games that look like they have been put through a freaking meat grinder and no covers/inserts , shitty used systems that got the ol "once over" with a damp towel I could go on and on but I KNOW that most fellow gamers here know exactly where im coming from therefore no need to elaborate any further.

There are game stores, they just don't have "EB" and "GAME STOP" for a name.

I think the last game i bought at EB was "Super Mario Land 2" and i just happened to luck out and get a copy that included a box (not that it was that important to get it).

But when i see current games i laugh at thier price compared to thier relative condition and i realize how bad it must be if i can get a better copy off Ebay than EB can ever possibly offer.

Well I try to steer clear of the EB in Bangor anyway. None of the people there have a clue to what there selling, and I try to find most of the games I still collect for the 64 on-line. Last time I went into gamestop was a few years ago. I asked if they had any Genesis consoles in their back room and the fat bitch laughed in my face. I vowed never to go in there again. I didn't even know they still carried N64 games. Theres some I wouldn't mind getting, but I sure don't want to go into gamestop to get them. I have most of the PSX games I want, and a lot of their games are incomplete. I don't mind bare carts if they came in a carboard box, but I don't like incomplete CD games or incomplete cart games that come in plastic or vinyl boxes.
