Aren't Ebay prices for RoR only around $10?

Its not easy to find, but I've never really seen it in demand either.

it seemed to be fetching about 25-30 bucks around here a few years ago. i guess its not worth the effort then. great game though.

Ring of Red is a bit uncommon, but it is usually available and cheap on the internet.

Great, great game, though. Anyone who doesn't own it should really do themselves a favor and pick it up.

I've always been intrigued by Ring of Red. Can someone tell me more about it? (And please don't point me to a review site - I want a regular fan's perspective.) Thanks!

its a kind of action-based strategy rpg. meaning: you'll be in control of the battles in real-time, dodging bullets and attacks while issusing orders to your infantry and aiming your projectile attacks. its set in an altered historal point in which japan is divided into communist / imperial / democratic parties that are on the bridge of war. you command a covert team sent after a super-duper mech stolen from your base. the themes are kind of neat, old fashion (and very logical) mechanical warfare with parts that reminds me of saving private ryan style gunfights. please please buy a new copy so maybe konami will release a sequel.

I got a used copy at EB a few months ago, I picked it up becaseu I dont see it often in game stores anymore. I havent played it yet because I always thought it was an ordinary turn based strategy game, but now that I know that its actualy eal time battles I will haveto try it out sometime.

This sounds about right. There was a point in time that it could have been considered very uncommon, but currently, it's not unlikely to stumble across them in stores, and of course, the intarwebs.

One of the few games I ever actually finished (I'm a mechead).

It's kind of like Front Mission with two really different twists.

First.. instead of upgrading parts/weapons on your mech; you change out and upgrade the foot infantry squad that accompanies your mech alongside you. They complement the capabilities of your mech (i.e. fire flares for night fighting, smoke grenades, etc.). This brings into light a whole different strategical approach when you duel one-on-one with another mech and his squad (You never take on multiple enemies as I recall).

Second.. since the battles are in real time; and the mechs are kind of "alternate universe pre-WW II style". They belch smoke and have diesel engines and the driver sits ON the mech.. not in it. Your main weapons are always ballistic in nature. No lasers, pulse guns or rail-guns for that matter here. When in a duel.. the real time aspect comes into play because both you AND your opponent are firing at each other simultaneously. The longer you wait to fire your cannon at your opponent.. the more accurate (chance of hit) your shot is. Of course.. your opponent has the same option; and may or may not beat you to the punch.. so after a while this gets crucial.

I bought this game when it first came out because mech based titles were woefully lacking on the PS2. I finished it in about three weeks as I recall; but it was so long ago I can't remember if you get to change out mechs during the game. I don't think so.. but I DO remember partners in other mechs travelling with you.. I just can't remember how they play out in the game. For some reason I can't recall me and my partners taking turns during a fight.. but I could be wrong.

I agree with pragmatic insanester though, it's an awesome game and totally deserving a sequel. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I've never dragged it out and played it since I finished it; and I've thought about it.. but the replay value is limited due to a set storyline and a lack of customization of your mech.. which is the star of the show.

Lastly.. although the manual is fairly thorough in covering gameplay basics it is woefully lacking in explaining what all of the little icons and statistics mean when you are configuring squads and checking status of your mech/squad. I had to play quite a ways into it until I figured out every little detail and what they meant. As I recall.. there were also some very good FAQs for it over at GameFAQs that helped me a lot.. but still didn't explain everything.

Also.. there's a site online somewhere run by the biggest Front Mission fan of all time (I lost the URL awhile back). He has many pages devoted to all Front Mission games and a few even devoted to Ring of Red. If I can find him again (I'll look through my old URL archives on cd) I'll post a link here.

You should check out MS: Saga if you like mech based rpgs.

If I remember right, the main character gets a new mech about halfway thru. He still has that bigass cannon though, so I don't think it makes a lot of difference.

It's an active time battle system, similar to FFT. The character with the highest speed stat goes first and so forth. And I think you get 7 teammates during the course of the game.

Yeah, it's one of my favorite games. The alternate WW2 storyline and universe are awesome. Hopefully Konami will make a sequel sometime.

It has an in-game manual/info system that explains everything.
