I've heard that Joe and Mac 2 was released for the SNES, or maybe the Genesis, yet I've never been able to locate a copy. Was it arcade only or what? I loved the original on the SNES and would love to track down the sequel.

There was a third game as well, probably the best one in the series.

The third game IS the second game in the US, it was released as "Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics." The second game in the series (released as number two everywhere else) was "Congo's Caper" in the US.

Love the whole series. Including Congo's Caper. I have the Super Famicom imports of Joe & Mac 1 and Congo Caper. Great stuff.

Er, wait a sec. Congo's Caper is not a sequel to Joe And Mac. Where did you get this information? Did the game -say- it was a sequel?

If anything it's a spiritual successor, but not a real sequel.

There were three Tatakae Genshijin games on the Super Famicom. The first one was Joe & Mac in the US, the second was Congo's Caper in the US, and the third became Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics in the US.

In the UK the first game was released as Caveman Ninja, the second as Caveman Ninja 2, and the third as Joe & Mac 3: Lost in the Tropics.

And you thought all the Contra name changes were confusing. LOL

I know what you mean. I always felt that way too. However, there are stone statues of Joe & Mac you find in Congo's Caper, perhaps the only connection between the games despite having similar gameplay and bosses.

Indeed, J&M 2 came out on SNES. I won it as part of a package where all the games were boxed... pretty lucky got it for like $28. Sold off the doubles and J&M 2 came out to be like, essentially $5 paid for.

Congo's Caper, in an ad of it it states "Joe and Mac's cousin"

so there ya go :P

I have yet to play any of these 3 games, but they look right up my alley.

Here's a good question. Is Joe & Mac 2 or Congo's Caper more like their arcade counterparts, or are they altered? I much prefered Joe & Mac on the Genesis rather then the SNES one because it was an arcade conversion. The SNES Joe & Mac was made more into a traditional platformer (snore), and played very, very slowly...

Youre right.
I played joe and mac 1 on snes for the first time last night. I was surprised to find out that it isnt close to the arcade game. The first scene has a lot of platform jumping (boring). I will keep playing the genesis version!

Joe and Mac 2 on the arcade was a Tumble Pop-type game, rather fun. But as far as I know, Congo's Caper didn't have an arcade version.

As far as I know, Joe & Mac 2 was originally for rental only. That's why it's still so hard to find now. I don't think that it was ever actually sold anywhere. I only ever saw it in rental stores. Either way, it must be very rare. Especially complete.

No it was sold at retail stores. I owned this one back then and still do. Was a hard one to find even back then though.

Whoa, thanks for all the info guys. I need to get both Congo's Caper and Joe & Mac 2 then.

And for the record, the SNES version > Genesis version.

heh, never played the GEN version so can't personally comment on that. However, many I talked with prefer the GEN version and say it's more accurate to the arcade than the SNES is to it.

I've always loved the SNES version of Joe & Mac. Congo's Caper's pretty good too. However, I never could get into Joe & Mac 2. For some reason, the game just didn't appeal to me. Maybe that's why I sold it to my aunt a long time ago. Planning on buying it back eventually though... :hmm:

Curious about the GEN version now that I've heard about it here.

Well, the GEN version almost has a Ghouls N' Ghosts feel to it, only with short action packed levels, and an emphasis on boss fights. Not everyone is big on short stage levels, but I dig it. The SNES game just felt clunky and the levels were too long. Plus, Data East removed the charge up attack...

I never knew they had a charge-up attack :bawling:
Maybe I should try and find the Genesis version...

Cool I never knew that Congo's Caper was a sequel to JM, I'll have to check it out, I have had JM2 for years, is it that rare to find nowadays? I guess I don't see it that often like stated, the DB says it is a R4 and $10, is it rarer and worth more than that?

The NES version has it too. You just hold down the attack button for a few seconds and then let it rip, and depending on what weapon you currently have, a giant version of it will be thrown. Joe or Mac will begin swinging their arm in circles really fast (this animation is completely absent in the NES version as well as the giant weapon sprite). You have to be careful though, if you hold it for too long, they switch to an exhausted animation and lose half their life points!

haven't played it in a while.
I think I got it at a yard sale...or my Grandma...one of them.

In regards to Joe & Mac? I wonder where the PC verison stands? (Maybe Hardcore Gaming 101 should do a writeup.)

I remember screenshots of Congo's Caper; the art style looks completely different from Joe & Mac.
