A bootleg SNES, I don't believe it, but something is definitely weird about it.

Its a very nice bootleg!

Yep, its a bootleg. Its very nicely done, but it takes 1 sec to figure out if its real or not. Just look at the screws. This one uses normal Philps screws, not 4.5mm security screws, which the original SNES (both old and new model) uses.
Also some funny typos on the box like "Nintenndo" with double N LOL

Someone pointed me to what I guess is probably this very same pirat eocnsole just a few weeks ago. It's available from xinga.com. The one in their pictures looks quite a bit less authentic than this one, but that sort of variation in pirate systems is common. I bet if you ordered form Xinga, you'd get the same thing this guy got (it came with a Nintendo Power subscription card? WTF? That's some dedicated pirates).
I don't know of too many pirate SNES consoles. Just this one and another one that Xinga used to sell years ago that was CD-based (with no battery backup for saves) and the one in the Tristar64. The only one I've had any experience with is the Tristar64 and I can tell you that its compatibility is totally pants (only about 3 of my fairly small collection of 15 or so SNES games ever worked in it). I wonder if this one is any better?

Yeah, this snes is very common here in Brazil, sellers put it on for sale like an original nes and cheat the idiots
This system comes modded, so games like mario rpg will not work and don't work in some old tvs

People have known about these things for a long time. Quite interesting in my humble opinion...
Typical low build quality though. Pop one open and you'll notice the crappy contruction and the lack of shielding. Yay.
The CD based clone is called Game Station, btw.

I've been wanting to get my mits on one of those things for quite awhile.

This looks like the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-In-Box-System-Plays-SNES-Super-Nintendo-Games_W0QQitemZ8272420707QQcategoryZ62054QQssPageN ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Check out the wording...
"Up for auction is a new in box system that plays SNES Super Nintendo games. It comes wrapped in it's plastic and never taken out. It plays the U.S. SNES games. Please don't expect the box the system is in to be perfect. This box has some dinged corners, however, the system is in perfect condition. This item is sold with the purpose of it being played, not collected. It comes with 2 controllers, an ac adaptor, an rf switch, av cables & Instruction Manual. I took some pictures so you can see how the system looks. Please look at the pictures as this is what you will receive. If you have any questions, I will try to answer them as best as I can."
I see he has another one up on Ebay and it's over $100 now. I contacted the three highest bidders, warning them that it's a bootleg. Nobody in their right mind would pay that much knowing it's a fake.

:eek 2: Are you guys freaking serious?!
It's a new SNES! It was re-released in 1997 as the SNES mini. Nintendo released this right before N64 to increase the hype. How do you guys not know this...I repeat this is a REAL SNES. And I'll say again: Nintendo re-released the SNES in '97, as the mini SNES.
Also, you can't just bootleg the SNES, a lot of the patents on it are on, and nevertheless, it's almost impossible to recreate its hardware. So, I can't believe that you couldn't recognize the Mini Snes :hmm:
Also:
No sticker because it's used...Nintendo's as in: Nintendo's Super Nintendo Entertainment System...OK!
I have a mini SNES myself (busted, fryed it by accident, wet adapter), and there are the torq screws right there.
Also Also: NIB...I want it....NIB! Now that is rare!
Hang on...sorry for the bluntness back there, but the AC~DC adapter seems odd...odd...but really, a bootlegged SNES is improbable.

That's a nice bootleg, not super impressive but still would be a nice part of a bootleg collection.

demonofaj,
We know about the redesigned SNES, but this particular system is a bootleg. I just looked at both of my NIB SNES systems, and one of them is indeed the same bootleg as described here. I'm pissed. I could take photos of both boxes (they are sealed, so I will not open them) to prove it.
InsaneDavid, sorry about the link. :)

It's a bootleg. It's close, but it's a boot.

Here is a photo I just took for comparison. The fake is on top. The fake box also has many insane misspellings.

In some cases the seller doesnt know their fake. A guy over here sold about 10 units before he noticed they were fake. They went as high as $170 - $200. Atleast he claimed he didnt know, but he is a serious collector so i belive him.
The controllers in the auction, they dont have the "Super Nintendo" logo, atleast it looks like they dont have it.

That may be, but how do people get 10-20 at a time and not know they are fakes? Also, the person in this auction is wording his auction very carefully. He knows they are fake.

Hehe, this post cracks me up. Believe me dude, they're fakes. Just look at the boxes...the typos...also, I believe in the linked thread, you see pictures of the internals...Really shitty build quality, as I mentioned earlier. Also note the crappily printed service label...the PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS...the different plastic...etc
Lots of people know about this...for some reason though...this info hasn't spread about. The only case of someone noticing the difference that I can recall recently is somebody...maybe on www.gamesx.com tried to have one modded...and found out that it couldn't be modded...as the internals were quite different from a legit SNES2.
The text of that auction was interesting, btw. It's a shame so many people are getting scammed. Kudos to you guys for sending Emails to bidders on these things---just make sure you know it's a fake one!

The lack of the serial number window is all it took for me to realize that that pup was a bootleg. The Super NES was the first system where Nintendo tracked the sales of specific systems by forcing retailers to scan the serial number.

did nintendo use 3D mario models on the new SNES?
the only box i saw with a quick google search had a yoshi, but the left of the box was covered with a label

I's funny that they would make the back of the box look SO good, yet forget obvious things like sticking a label on the bottom and cutting the serial window, and of course the spelling errors.
At first glance the box looks legit though (except the window), it's a little faded but otherwise pretty great.

Yes Ive seen them on Xinga too.. they are not obviously a fake at first glance and I can see how sellers may think they are real.. however if they are buying them from the Far East, how can they possibly expect it to be genuine???
gbax was selling SNES 2's brand new boxed a few months ago, I was going to buy two, the website said they were official Nintendo.
Obviously I dont know, but they could of been these bootleg systems.. the cheeky buggers!
They were asking about £50 each but they probably bought in bulk and got them really cheap.
I emailed a few times over several weeks, but they never got back to me about getting any more in... glad I didnt bother now!
I was gonna order one from Xinga, but I guess I know exactly what its like now!
They sell megadrives as well.

Bah! Who needs shielding? Damn wussy FCC.
I tend to think this sort of clone is less interesting than the complete redesigns or the Famicom-in-a-PSOne-case stylee. The most interesting thing about this one is just how damn close they came with the packaging. I've never seen such a careful pirate. I mean, they even have child safety warnings on the plastic bags and all the little cards and flyers and stuff inside.
The CD based clone is called Game Station, btw.

Ah, very interesting. That page indicates that the GameStation system uses a 12V power supply, which is what I have long suspected my Tristar64 also wants. It didn't come with a power supply of any sort when I got it, so I've been using a plain old 9V one, but when I took the system apart, the markings inside made me think it was designed for 12VDC. I didn't fully understand what the components I was looking at were, so I wasn't sure, but this info about the GameStation wanting 12V makes me want to try it now on my Tristar64, too, and see if that improves the compatibility. I'd love to get better compatibility out of the thing, as it is now, it's basically useless since none of my favorite games work on it at all.
I also discovered when I took the Tristar64 apart that it uses a video encoder chip that should be outputting s-video even though the signal isn't passed to the AV port. So I may try modding it for s-video at least, if not RGB (at least the SNES side of it--the Famicom side is just a Famicom-on-a-chip feeding directly to the composite signal on the AV-out port).

Looks like someone "won" the second bootleg SNES he had listed for $125. I mailed this guy anyway, telling him not to pay it and file a complaint.
