Sup folks. The second tournament in this year's MAME league is going to start this Sunday. Remember that ANYONE can play in this tournament, whether you have been in the league so far or not.
Hanes Her Way® Portsmouth Open SHMUPS Challenge, Portsmouth NH
This tournament will be Shmups only. Games like Gradius, 1945, etc.
I am not going to limit the number of players for this tournament. The deadline to sign up will be this Saturday night at midnight PDT. However many people sign up by then is how many we will play with.
Because so many people have been so generous in giving me meseta for the MAME league, there will be no entrance fee for this one. Prizes will be:
1st Place: 10,000 meseta
2nd Place: 5,000 meseta
3rd Place: 2,000 meseta
If you want to sign up, just reply in this thread.
If you don't know much about the MAME league and want to learn more, check out the web site:
http://mameleague.jibbajaba.com
And the discussion thread here on DP:

Count me in. Not sure how much time I'll have to devote to it, but I should be able to crack out some love.
(as long as we're not playing Image Fight. Please god, don't let me get raped by that game any more than I have to)
edit - what's with the MAME32 0.95 binary? Anything wrong with the newer builds / seems like a great reason to use WolfMAME (http://wolfmame.marpirc.net/)

My guess is that newer builds are discouraged because they need a lot more CPU power to run.

well then we should be using one of the v0.36 builds or something, because 0.95 was after a large rewrite. Regardless, the cpu differences are negligable for pretty much all of the shmups (if any at all). I think the one bad thing about 105u1 is that apparently the CPS2 driver got borked up because of the 68000 driver or some such... but that's been fixed in the other builds...
I really don't want to have to roll my romsets back to an outdated version.

Correct, MAME v0.95 is recent enough to run the newer romsets yet far enough back to allow operation on a wide swipe of systems. You can use any build of MAME you'd like however you MUST use the provided ROM file. There is a full rules listing at the official MAME League site (http://mameleague.jibbajaba.com/).
well then we should be using one of the v0.36 builds or something, because 0.95 was after a large rewrite.
The rewrite is why v0.95 is used, it will support the more modern and easier to find romsets. It was also the version released in the previous tournament.
I really don't want to have to roll my romsets back to an outdated version.
Again, please read the rules. You can use any version of MAME you like but you MUST use the provided ROM file. The provided ROM will work with v0.95 and thereby be compatible with builds of MAME from after the semi-recent overhaul. Multiple installs of MAME can live happily together in different directories. (my main MAME install being v0.76 since that's the last full romset I have, however I have a v0.95 directory for this competition alone)

You can't use the provided file with any version of MAME, you can only use the provided file with any version of MAME that supports that specific romset.
I don't believe the myth that 0.95 is any faster or slower than any of the more recent builds on any games that actually "matter", and I really don't see why you're sticking with it other than laziness to update a few sets here and there. An ungodly number of drivers have been fixed and added since then (Nemesis' audio has been fixed, graphic glitches in R Type Leo have been fixed, major changes to the Taito F2 and F3 drivers, Boogie Wings is now playable, etc etc etc etc etc). You know, stuff that might matter if you're playing shmups.
...So yea, count me out.

<sigh>
As stated IN THE RULES, you may use ANY version of MAME that you want. The ROM provided is tested on version 0.95, and you have to use the ROM provided. We play older games, so I don't think that any updates are going to matter much. If a game does not run smoothly, then we won't play it.
Thank you for backing out. I would rather have you complain now then start doing it in the middle of the tournament.

Sign me up for this as well, especially since I'm much better at playing SHMUPS than the titles that have been thrown at us since the "Stanley Steemer" event, which I began faltering on, not only because of the lack of time I had to play (work comes first in today's world) but also because games like Lady Bug, Puzzle Bobble and The Simpsons just weren't my cup of tea in terms of gaming expertise.
I'm totally down for ANY SHMUPS that will be there. The meseta wouldn't hurt either. ;)

ehh, however, I just can't get it to work.
I've had a friend try to help me before, and he couldn't either.
I have a zipped and unzipped Dig Dug 2 inside of my ROM folder.
I clicked audit all games.
I clicked available.
It has nothing listed under available.
It's really pissing me off!

There are MANY different builds of MAME and MANY different romsets - they have to be compatible with one another. You're more than likely using a version of MAME with a rom that have too much space in between them. Either a very old rom with a new build of MAME or a pre-recent rewrite version of MAME with a more modern converted rom.
I really don't want to address general MAME problems, Mameworld.net and the MAME.net forums and guides are a much better place for those. If you use the build of MAME (v0.95) available from the 2006 DP MAME League site then you'll have a lot less headaches. All roms for the competition will be supplied and although you may use ANY build of MAME that will work - you MUST use the provided rom(s). As the provided rom(s) will be tested with MAME v0.95 - if you want to keep things simple that's the version to use.
As for Giga Wing, somehow I think it may chug on a few people's systems.

Good deal, I'll do it late tonight as it's way too freaking humid in here right now. (have to finish an RTM article as well) I'll probably salvage / rewrite some of my posts from this competition as well as last year's. I'll e-mail it to you or via a PM.

Guys, keep an eye on the MAME League discussion thread. I will announce the first game there. If you are on the mailing list already, then of course you will get the regular e-mail alert. If not, then what are you waiting for? Shoot a message to mameleague@gmail.com with your DP handle so I can add you.
