sony has announced that they will be releasing the playstation 3 console sometime this year. game fans everywhere are looking forward to the month of november 2006 as this seems to be the time of year that retailers aim for to launch their new merchandise for the holiday season.

wether or not the ps3 will launch in the USA during november has yet to be seen, but what affect will this have on game collectors everywhere, especially those that collect ps2 games?

what do you think of the 50 dollar price tag and do you think the playstation 2 will start to see more and more of these lower level price releases such as "bode miller" the 15 dollar release or "Lets ride" ananother 15 dollar release.

with more and more of these low price games being made by third parties it reminds me of the time when you could find playstation one games new cheap for that same price range. but most of those were made by the same company and came with similiar covers such as the battle master? and games like driving..... those may not be the right names, but most collectors can hint to what im talking about.

will final fantasy XII be the last $50 release in the USA?

Short answer: yes.

Dirge of Cerebrus comes out after FF12, right? Not to mention God of War 2, or any other really big title that will easily sell at $50, like the Maddens 2007 or 2008...

I doubt it, companies always like to think they can manage $50 price points and still reel in gamers. Look at the GameCube, it's been dead for months and we're still seeing $50 games all over the place.

It's still only April, even if the PS3 launches in November you'l still see full priced games for a minimum of 6 months after that... Look at the DC, it's been unsupported officially for 4 years, just had two $50+ releases this year.

I'd bet there's at least 50 more games to be released at around $50....

Agreed. The PS2 has a huge user base (largest ever?). I'd be surprised if there were no $50 releases in 2008.

the last PS2 games I will buy new are:

FF12

Scarface

God of War 2

but yes Im sure we will see $50 releases for the PS2 well into 2008 and possibly beyond depending on the rate of adaptation that the PS3 and Revo get wich I think will be faaar slower than previous generations but well see.

As Ps3 games are scheduled to be between $69.99 and $89.99, there's gonna be loads of $50 PS2 games for the near future.

No actual solid link, but think of it this way. Xbox 360 uses standard DVD 9 discs, is easier to program for, and the games retail at $69.99.

Blu Ray are more costly to manufacture, and Ps3 is complex to program for with higher development costs.
The sensible estimate of PS3 cost for games is a minimum of $69.99, more realistically $79 or $89.

No way it'll happen, IMO. That'd be commercial suicide for them. If they have a more expensive system than the 360, they'll have to match the software price in order to keep customer appeal.

For a while, the Nintendo 64 was more costly and had more expensive games. But these were all $60 Pokemons (and hugely sucessful $50 Marios and Zeldas). It did well enough compared to the Dreamcast, which was the cheapest system at the time and had similarly priced $40-50 games.

Sony will charge whatever they want to. Will BD's cost more? Yes. Will they be more than $59.99? Maybe. Compare UMD prices then and now. The movies have gone down $5-15 for new releases, while the games are still $40 or $50 (no change in the games). While UMDs cost more to manufacture, they only reduce the profit margin, not negate it. If they really are that expensive, $70 isn't really all that far off. Especially if people plunk down $500 or $700 for a system and an extra controller, etc.

So you believe your less than solid source?

360 games here cost 49.99 - 59.99. Saying that a PS3 game will be 20 - 30 dollars more is not sensible at all.
