I've got a few Japanese PSX games in the larger, oversized cases.
Sadly, a few of those cases are either beat to hell or broken in some fashion.
Anyone know of an outlet or source for replacements?

I don't know of any sources unfortunately. From time to time I have seen them for sale on the B&S forums here, so you may want to try there. Otherwise you could try to get some cheap sports longbox games to sacrifice.

Every once in a while I get lucky and find some crap longbox game in a nice case. I've had the most luck at pawn shops in finding those cases -- pick up a $2 game you don't want, get a nice case...
I think those cases have been out of production so long that they're probably not going to be available new anymore. At least I can't think of anything that uses them these days....

Actually, they're not like the Saturn/early PSX cases we got here.
They're bigger(thicker) than a standard jewel case, yet smaller(thinner) than a traditional double case. They also have the PlayStation logo on the side.
They may also be used in PAL games, but I don't have any, nor have I seen one to confirm that.

Yeah, I have a few busted ones myself.
Do you think they were made for eariler releases or what?
Anyways, i'd say try and pick up some cheap majohng (sp) games and swap them out. Maybe strike a deal with a big seller on ebay that can't seem to get some of those games to sell.

They were used all throughout the lifespan of the PlayStation in Japan. It usually comes down to what company published each title. For example, I don't think I've ever seen a Konami release that wasn't in those cases, but with the more unknown small companies, they'd tend to go with the standard cases. Probably was cheaper to go with the latter.

Of the 5 oversized cases I have here, four have PlayStation embossed on the
sides of the case. One doesn't, so I suspect it's a generic replacement
case. That should mean that it's possible to find more of them. I searched
around awhile and only came up with one site that has what appears to be
the case you're looking for....

I measured some cases and came up with these dimensions.
Playstation deep case:
length - 5.625"/142.8mm
width - 5.125"/130.1mm
depth - .687"/17.4mm
standard double jewel case:
length - 5.6"/142.2mm
width - 4.9"/124.6mm
depth - .950"/24.13mm
standard single jewel case:
length - 5.6"/142.2mm
width - 4.9"/124.6mm
depth - .415"/10.54mm

I also have some Japanese Saturn games that are in these type of slightly thicker jewel cases. The non-engraved ones are NOT exclusive to the PlayStation. Sankyo Fever-S Jikki Simulation and Daytona USA Circuit Edition use them - probably many other games as well. Why games were released in these I still don't understand - maybe if they had oversized booklets but Sankyo Fever-S Jikki Simulation has a very thin booklet. Also these weren't some quick changeout since the insert and obi (spinecard) use the larger dimensions as well.
