View Full Version : Which way to go?

OK, I have reached a questionable point in my collecting. Should I collect for one system or should I keep going to collect every US made game system? Or both?

I just recently bought a TurboGrafx-16 and considered starting to collect the 94(I believe that is the total for the US) games for it but I have also considered a Genesis collection, which way should I go with this? Or should I add to my 20-some-odd systems? I really need to decide which to do, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dave

I always believed that you collect only things you really like. I also recommend sticking to one system(but never pass up a really good deal on any system). When you finish getting all the games you want for one system, move on to the next system. I know most collectors who got burned out was because they were collecting everything. That can be expensive and a task that eats up time. Picking one system at a time gives collecting a focus and you see real improvements. Back 15 years ago when comics were hot, people collected just about anything. Well, it got expensive and the fun just was lost. It became a fulltime job just to get all the new comics every week. It killed the fun and the industry suffered. Keep collecting fun and simple, you will enjoy it more. As far as what system, consider which one you like the most and which one is easy to collect for.

Personally, I just collect for whatever I come across (for systems I own) in the wild. My current interest also plays a factor for what I focus on more. I'd assume since you're new to a TG-16 that you've probably got a high interest in that particular console at the moment. Still, if I were you, I wouldn't hesitate on any good deals you come across for Genesis games or any other systems you collect for.

I'm in the same boat and have already made that decision. I'm slowly selling off all the stuff that I never had as a kid.

I agree 100%. I'd pick a system you really like and go for it. And as has been said, if you see something cool outside your collection, still get it, but mainly just do one system.

Whatever the case, don't shy away from completing a Genesis collection because it is too large. If you want to complete it, the best thing you can do is start collecting it right now. And don't chose to collect for the Turbo Grafx just becuase it has a small library of games therefore making it easy to complete.

If it's a good deal and/or great trading fodder for your current interest, do it!

Yeah as many of the games for the TG-16 are very expensive. I was going for multiple systems and to some extent I still am. I have found that it is way simpler (cheaper) to focus on just one system at a time to collect, but to purchase games for other systems if they are a good price or just a great game that you want to play. No matter what though collect them because you like to play them, just my opinion.

It is a litle overwelming to collect multiple systems at the same time however if you are going to do so then i suggest taking you focus off of completeing your collections unless your main focus is on one system at a time!

Whatever is flowing in the wild tends to control my collecting habits. Two years ago I was hardcore about picking up boxed Genesis/Sega CD games because my local swap was flooded with them. Now days the Genesis/Sega stuff has dried up, but the loose NES stuff is still plentiful, so I've moved onto that.

The TG-16 is a real bitch to collect for in the wild. In all honesty, CGE was the only place I've actually found hucards "in the flesh" since the console's hey day. Maybe things are diff in your neck of the woods?

If the current trends in your chunk of the wild aren't a factor and you're collecting via online...then in all honesty, only you know the answer to your question (and you probably knew it before you even hit submit on your initial post). Do what feels good. Collecting goals shouldn't be written in stone. If the TG-16 peaks your interest, then go for it.

I mostly just collect games that are interesting and different rather than trying to complete a collection. To me, I don't see the point of collecting a system just to complete it, unless I had a really strong interest in that system.

It IS really nice to have a complete set of something, though (even though I don't) -- but only if it's what you really like. For me, I like a diverse collection of equipment, games, memorabilia rather than all of one thing. But, as you've noticed here, some people are exactly the opposite.

collect what you like and enjoy if you can only afford to do one then go with your favorite system but if you can do more then go for it.never pass up a good deal on a game system you dont have either because you may be able to use it toward a trade on something you really want.

Hmmn, If I would be you, I would collect games, systems etc. that I would want,..
Like me, I decided when I did start my collection that I would collect only SNES and N64 games and systems.
Now I have SNES, Gameboys, N64, MD, SMS and other console stuff..
Nowadays, I just collect videogames, like everything that I can buy,..

So...
Be the collector, young jedi.
