View Full Version : I think I need a "Zenith mod" on my Genesis...

Heyo, I have a first generation Sega Genesis, and my gaming TV is a 2005 Sanyo. When I play the Genesis, the picture rolls twice every 5 seconds. (EXCEPT with Twin Cobra!) I read that the Genesis is incompatible with some TVs (namely Zenith) and in that case it'll need a "Zenith mod". At first I thought it was a fakey component in the video circuitry, but I compared it with 2 TVs- The Genesis signal goes out via the AV (RCA) cable, into a switchbox, which goes to another switchbox, and sends the signal out to 2 TVs, yoko and tate.(vertical) I turned on both TVs and let the game idle, the Sanyo (yoko) TV had the picture rolling every 5 seconds, and the RCA (tate) was just fine. So I guess it is the TV compatability thing I'm dealing with here.

But I can't find any information at all on this "Zenith mod"; I did see a few posts here from years ago but nobody knew what that process involves. And Sega charges $45.00 to do repairs, so I know they aren't going to tell me.

So, ahh... can anyone help me out here?

My brother had to have a Zenith mod done once. I wonder if he still has that Genesis....wish I could tell ya by opening it up!

This site claims some early Playstations had teh same problem:

My PS1 had a similar problem, except the screen would just bounce up and down repeatedly. This happened on two Zenith TVs that I had. I sent it to Sony so they could perform a "bouncing screen modification" (their words), and it's been fine ever since. Kinda bizarre.

Unfortunately I don't know what exactly they changed, so I can't help ya out.
