I have these NES games on hold at a local shop, and I'm trying to determine which are good and which are crap. That's where you folks come in. :P The games are:
- Milon's Secret Castle
- 10 Yard Fight
- Snake, Rattle and Roll
- Golf
- Monster Party
- Starship Hector
- Kickle Cubicle
- Fighting Golf
All are fairly priced and such, so that's not too huge of an issue. A quick response would be most appreciated. :)

My general rule of thumb is that all NES golf games suck something fierce, so I'd say to avoid those unless you're collecting. 10 Yard Fight is also one of my most-hated games ever. Get Tecmo Super Bowl or even the original Tecmo Bowl if you want NES football.
However, Kickle Cubicle is definitely a fun game. I couldn't get into Snake, Rattle and Roll, but I'm obviously in the minority. The others I've played some time ago but can't remember much.

Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf (known simply as "Fighting Golf" on the Famicom) is one of the few good NES golf games - NES Open being the other. When the original Golf was released on the Gameboy it was a lot more like Fighting Golf than the original NES Golf. It's also an SNK game, the console port of the arcade version (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=13056).

Though I haven't played Monster Party, I got it on the way in the mail, and have heard some good things about it. The review of MP here on DP says "Really no excuse NOT to own this cool little game, especially seeing how it's so cheap."
Besides, if anything else, that cool cover deserves a place in every NES owner's library. 8-)

Milon's Secret Castle
Snake, Rattle, 'n' Roll
Kickle Cubicle
Trash the rest.

Milon and Kickle Cubicle are safe bets, they should keep you busy for awhile, I also didn't know KC had an arcade version, Milon I could never get far on.

I vote for Milon's Secret Castle. I would consider Monster Party if it's inexpensive and you're interested in a slightly out of the ordinary but by no means great platformer.
I never played Kickle Cubicle. (Not a puzzle fan.)

Starship Hector is one of the hardest shooters on the system but decent. Also go with Monster Party and Kickle Cubicle. The rest are crap.

Snake Rattle n' Roll is one of my favorite games of all time! it has incedible graphics on the NES version and I won't even get into the genesis version. I will admit it is an extremely difficult game to finish, like all of Rare's other games, but it is a great game with some truly amazing gameplay and control.

These are not top tier, but still good and worth playing:

- Fighting Golf
And the trash:

EDIT: Woo hoo, same time post with ShinobiMan

Actually, you know what, Snake Rattle & Roll is one of those games I always find myself coming back to (like another thread asked recently). It's just so much fun, the music, the colors, the attitude.
Kickle Cubicle, same thing. It's so upbeat and colorful.

I love Monster Party. I'm also aware that I'm definitely in the minority when it comes to MP. Regardless, I say grab it. Kickle Cubicle is another worth grabbing.
Judging from the list, you seem to have some interest in golf games...I got the regular NES "Golf" off eBay recently for $.25 (n/i S/H), so if $ is an issue, I wouldnt pay too much for it at the shop.
Being a MN neighbor (we've PM'ed before), what store are you talking about? The one in Roseville? Still havent made it back there since my last disturbing visit...

Actually, to be honest I find Golf to be a fun game if you have a friend to play it with. It's boring playing by yourself, but it can be pretty fun with a friend.
Monster Party is also quite the gaming experience. It's got to be one of the strangest games I've ever played. It's fun, but very odd.

That's the one (Game Cauldron). I ended up picking up all the ones I listed plus a few others (Solar Jetman and Life Force), and the guy gave me a decent deal on them. As far as business goes, they just switched owners (again) and I really like what they've done with the place. They've also done a good job at getting new stuff in their inventory on a regular basis, which is something the last owner did poorly.

I used to play 10 Yard Fight all the time. I really did love it. I still have the cart and occasionally pop it in to try and figure out what I ever saw in that game. :) Actually, it's been a little while, maybe I should give it a go tonight...

Well, when I first discovered the place, I was blown away- another store to add to my "rounds", & in a good location (Roseville is sorta centrally located in the Twin Cities). They had HUGE enclosed tables of boxed Genny, S/NES, & other stuff, even some boxed 2600 carts, which I personally rarely see. I had a good conversation w/ the clerk & promised I'd be back on & off.
IIRC the next time I was there I got a few strategy guides for $2-3 each (good price). It was a younger guy behind the counter, & he didnt even acknowledge me OR say thanks! He was playing some RPG on the TV behind the counter & discussing the prev night's events on his cell.
The most recent time I stopped in, the place was dirty, messy (like items just thrown on/in the shelves/racks), smelled bad, & seemed pretty well cleaned out. Frankly, I was shocked- it was a real world example of entropy (look it up, kids! ;) ) That's when I mentioned it to pacmanhat, as he'd known the previous owners. Hopefully, it sounds like the place has turned around. I'm going hunting this weekend, maybe I'll stop in...
s1lence, what happened to you there?
OK, just went there this AM...
Inside, the doors to the back room(s?) are closed, I'm the only one out front, wondering if anyone is even working there (might be nice to know when a customer comes in! I couldve taken anything & ran- not that I would.) Some time later 3 guys, maybe late teens all come in together. They seem to work there, 2 of them go behind the counter (not a word to me- no "hi" "hello" "can I help you?"), one gets on the phone & one hangs around, literally pacing in the store as if wanting to help me but not.
I find the Atari 2600 carts, no visible prices, so I ask Pacer (guy #3) how much each. He asks the cashier (guy #2), & HE asks Guy #1 in back on the phone (who seems to be the leader). $2- not bad, so I get 5 & find NES Blades of Steel for $1 & check out. Guy #2 stares at the screen a bit, confused, then calls for Guy #1 to handle my purchase.
Meanwhile, ANOTHER late-teen comes in wearing- I kid you not- PJ pants & dirty pink bedroom slippers. He's out in public like this! I stifle my laughter/comments as my transaction ends. At least I got correct change & a "thanks" (I think.)
The place still had a musty, attic-y odor which was on the carts too- I smelled it all the way home, although they were in a bag. The store floor was filthy too, in need of a serious mopping. On the plus side, they had the carts I wanted, all in decent/working condition. They also had a couch/TVs set up to play games for customers I think/hope!
pacmanhat- if you personally know these guys, maybe you oughta mention this to them. I dont go there much, but I know that place could look/be much better than the seedy hangout it feels like.
