For the arcade game fan who plays arcade games at home, the "MAMExpose" presents you with the many joys - and pitfalls - of emulation, specifically those found while using our favorite program in the universe: MAME.

The latest column addresses the escapades of some of our "furry" friends: Kangaroo, Springer, and JJ Squawkers.

The column is highlighted at http://www.digitpress.com/columns/mamexpose.htm

Enjoy!

UPDATED.

There's a strange link between video games and Coca-Cola. You DON'T want to miss this one.

Peruse via the link above.

UPDATED today.

This sixth entry includes some unusual sleepers - not necessarily the ones that spring to mind. Check it out.

UPDATED this weekend.

This is a special "double size" MAMExpose (http://www.digitpress.com/columns/mamexpose.htm), featuring a lot of the junk of the 80's.

Anybody? Hello, is this thing on?

Great job, Jess! For some reason, the guys from Ka-Ge-Ki reminds me a bit of Dan... Dan could kick their asses any day of the week, however. 8-)

Dammit, why isn't there a "thumbs-up" emoticon? :D

Excellent reading as always...

Thanks, guys!
The Dan comparison is interesting, but Ka-Ge-Ki reminds me a little more of the River City Ransom (aka Downtown Nekketsu) series. I keep wondering if there's a connection...
There's also a Genesis version of Ka-Ge-Ki which adds more depth to the gameplay, yet still winds up being pretty lousy. The graphics took a big turn for the worse... everything is just so ugly.
Frankly, I don't think there's anything anyone can do to save the game. It's just that bad.

JR

P.S. Here's a question for everyone here... what arcade games do you think were bombs?

Excellent reading as always...

Yep. I especially enjoyed this month's installment because I'm always interested in learning about obscure, crappy games. It's a sickness.

I would only beg of Jess to specifically mention the developer and/or manufacturer of each game. I know I can find this out for my own damn self by playing the ROM, but I'm lazy.

That's a reasonable request, Zach. I'll have to include that information in the next episode of MAMExpose.

The first installment of MAMExpose for 2004 went online today, check it out!

Departing a bit from the usual theme, you'll find a handful of random "games you should check out" titles, similar to our MAME Club entries.

As always, worth a read (and a play).

Just had a look at this issue of the column. Will be going to have a look at the first game in there tonight, seems rather intriguing. I wonder though... does Jess hang about the Llamasoft forums from time to time? I only ask because we've played both Tinkle Pit AND Tube Panic very recently in our Lleague games playing competition...

Quality work as always, Jess! :)

Good call on reviewing Cybattler... it's such a great shmup that more fans of the genre should know about. Jaleco has made some of the most underrated titles ever, like 64th Street and Saint Dragon. That final boss battle, though... what a friggin' pain THAT was! x_x

So, how many of you out there are going to miss Data East? I didn't think it was that great a company, but I did enjoy some of its games, particularly Sly Spy.

Robocop is one of the greatest licensed titles I have ever played. EVER. So yes, I am missing them. :(

Great work, BTW. :)

Jess' column updated today!

Nice coverage on a few SHMUPS that were arcade machines in Japan only. Like SHMUPS? Like JAPAN? Then check out this week's MAMExpose.

I've been on a shmups kick these last couple weeks, and thanks to your column I will be getting omega fighter tonight. Sometimes I wonder if the japanese have infinite quarters because it seems near the end of some shmups I'm dying every 30 seconds! LOL

Almost forgot!

Updated yesterday, the updated feature here at DP was penned by Rob "Flack" O'Hara and includes a bunch of "buggy" games (probably not what you'd first expect)!

If you dig MAME, check out this latest installment, and be sure to check the back issues too. Lots of hidden gems among these mini-reviews.

Thanks for the link, Joe! And yes, Moon Patrol HAD to be mentioned in that article!!!

I have very fond memories of playing it on the 2600 back in the day (in fact, I was so much into that game that I wanted to tape it the VCR -- of course, it's not that complicated to do, but to an 11-year-old, it's not a simple task). And one thing's for sure: you play Moon Patrol for more than a few seconds, you end up with the game's music stuck in your head! It's THAT infectuous!!!

For those who come directly to the forums and don't check the front page for updates, a new MAMExpose colum has been published!

MAMExpose - The Double Dragon Series (http://www.digitpress.com/columns/mamexpose.htm)

Let me know what you think!

... much less found any Rosetta Stones. In fact the only stones I’ve found are the cobblestones which my character seems to constantly be lying face down on every time I try to get anywhere in this game.

I don't know why, but I'm in tears after reading that, mostly because it's true. LOL

I'm sure I've played it once or twice in arcades, but I didn't remember just exactly how bad it was until I loaded it up to write that article.

I rather enjoyed the Burgertime article. Always Liked those games...never was good at them. Just today i found out there's a gameboy version with a pepper pickup! Perhaps I have hope there.

MAMExpose has been updated today. This edition of MAMExpose is a bit different than most of the older ones. This one's called "Under Control" and talks about some of the different controllers you can use with MAME.
