View Full Version : Is it worth 400 bucks?

I need to know if the X-box 360 is worth 400 beans or not! I have a feeling that my wife and mother in law laid down the other 300 bucks to get it off lay-way. I know i'll buy it eventually, but the only game I want right now is Dead rising, (other than oblivion, But I don't have half the time to put into it (300+hours on Elder Scrolls.) I trust my comrades at DP to tell me!
Even though I'm new to the forums.

I've thought the same thing... and my big hinderance is that I just can't afford it, otherwise i'd own one right now.
But looking back at when I plunked down the 300 for the PS2 (near launch) I didn't regret it. I still dont. I didn't and don't regret plunking down the 300 for my XBox right after launch either. If you've got XBL the arcade stuff makes it even more fun. Theres still not alot out, but the system is barely 5 months old. It does take some time to really develop games for it (remember it took a year for the first 'good' PS2 titles to hit: MGS 2 and GTA 3). With that pretty much anything you'd want currently, you can pick up used and few bucks cheaper at any EB/GS store.

Whether to get one or not is a personal decision you have to make on your own. Our comments may or may not help you but ultimately it's your decision. With that in mind you should consider the pros and cons of getting it and why you really want to get it.
Speaking personally, I would not get one. That's because I've never paid more than $100 for a console and I'm not going to start now (it's a retro-gamer thing, what can I say? :)). When my ship comes in and I become stinking rich, the dollar amount will change. However, I'm not holding my breath.
I went throught the same decision making process back in 1993 when I bought my first PC (before then I only owned Atari and,um, Altair computers). I even created a journal chronicling my adventure to help determine if my purchase was worth the money (Ultimately, that particular purchase was a mistake since the PC - a laptop - had serious problems and it broke completely less than three years later. However, it was still worth it since I learned a lot about PCs and it helped my job). So, even if the purchase might be a mistake the process I went through was worth every penny.
Good luck!

Moving to modern gaming.
And for me that would be a big NO, but I am always puzzled by these questions. If it's worth it to you, don't you know that it's worth it to you? The system has been out for months now, it's not like it's a big mystery any more.

If you have the funds available, then there's enough content via traditional disc-based games and Xbox Live Arcade to justify the purchase, even if you don't have a ton of time to devote to it.
At least, that's how I see it.

I've been wrestling with this also, but i've been really liking the games that are coming/going to come out for it. Right now i put my money into my computer so i can get it up and running, but i will at some point buy the 360. Oh and don't get the core, and don't just settle with it, the only reason is that the 400 is the better deal if u add everything up, hell the HD is 100 bucks itself, no thanks.

I strongly suggest you go with your gut on this one. However, if you want to base your decision solely on MY opinion, then it's definitely worth every penny. :)

Actually there is nothing puzzleing about me asking, I merely wanted to know if the people who shelled out 400 dollars for the system were happy that they did. Or not. And I do know what I want, the question is: "will I be happy with it after I get it, just wanted a little feedback. Nothing more.
Thanx

I don't own one, but like soundwave said, There is supposed to be a price drop in october, $300 for the premium and $220 for the core.
I would buy one for $400 (Had one on the list for my B-Day) But i figured i might aswell wait for christmas, with this rumored price drop.

I have to answer an astounding yes to this question. I have spent about $1500 for my sysyem and a bunch of games (both disc based and arcade). I am for sure getting my moneys worth on this system and I really enjoy it.....my wife loves it as well. She loves Astropop, Bejeweled and other games of that sort so she has her own silver live account for posting her high scores and such. Is it worth the money for you? Well only you can decide, but my advice from someone that owns one, get it and don't look back!!!!

I own one(I won it) and I would wait for the chip modification and price drop. Mine has not been acting up, dont chance it though. Many of my friends have been having problems.

Same here, its got somthing for everyone.
Nintendo Wii would be my next purchase, but with Oblivon, and GRAW I've enjoyed it more then even when Halo 2 first came out.

I paid abut $600 CAD for mine. I grabbed the recharge kit as well. My 360 had a bum hard drive out of the box. I did some research on the problem I was having before I returned it and it seems to be a very very uncommon bug (lucky me). I only found 2 references to it on other boards. Unfortunately this turned me off a bit and I just got a refund instead of an exchange.
I have no doubt I would have received a good console back but I have had bad luck buying new electronics in the past. I think $400 is still fair and you'll get yout money's worth out of it. The 360 has a great future IMO.

I purchased my 360 at Launch, and the only regret I have about it is my lack of available time to spend playing it. It doesn't have a ton of amazing games yet, but I've purchased 5 games (and several xbox arcade games) that I've enjoyed playing enough to justify the early purchase. I've not had a problem with the system since I've gotten in either. But as said, it's completely up to you. What I find worth it and what you may find worth it are 2 completely seperate things.

Is it worth it right now... unless you like game that will be ported over back, and forth from PC, to playstation etc.... Then maybe. There is only about 3 games that I see that might intrest me if they don't port it over to PC. So in my opion it NOT worth 400 bucks.

Well that's the problem I'm having in my mind. Other than Oblivion, Right now there is only 2 must have games for me. #1Dead Rising,#2Prey.
And if they get it for me right now, those games aren't coming out for at least 2 or 3 months. Who want's to have a 400 dollar video game system with nothing to play! Christ I Still have Painkiller Hell wars on pre-order for the original X-box. And it has a lot to do with financial shit. I have a real problem shelling out 400 bucks for a toy, cause I feel bad for my wife. (She doesn't have expensive hobies) But she wants to make me happy ya know? But thanks for everyone helping me out I needed some feedback from folks who already bought it and if they thought it was worth it. I probably will get it down the line, cause i figure I'll HAVE to have it.

I'm biased, because I hate the original XBox, and wouldn't buy a 360 (unless I saw a really good deal or was given one.)
The thing is, I've always felt the PS2 has had not only more games, but better games, and so I'd hold out for that.

The 360 I think is a great value in one aspect, and that is the fact that it plays games High end PCs struggle to play.

I wasn't going to buy one right away but my original xbox broke (2nd time) so I decided to buy the 360 instead of investing any more money into the first one. So far no regrets.

let me ask you this: what is flying over a virtual realtime model of mexico city worth to you?
Gamereviewgod

Absolutely. The 360 has taken over my gaming time. The Live Arcade can't be touched. That, and the majority of the games are superb, including Ghost Recon, Condemned, Kameo, DOA 4, Call of Duty, and Top Spin.
Some of the ports make a huge upgrade on the 360, though that's a rare case unfortunately.

Yeah it's great. I think we've had like 6 of these threads now, but in all of them there was little criticizism of it. The system is just plain fun.

I say yes. I love mine and it has been getting a lot of play time lately. Table Tennis is amazing, GRAW has the most replayability, DOA 4 has an amazing online system.

Before E3 I Did not want an XBox 360 (Unless I got It for FREE) because it was From Microsoft, But now that I know the PS3 will be $660 (CDN) I would Wait For a 360 Price Drop then Buy one.
The 360?
It's next gen NOW. Today. You can get into next gen ASAP. Why wait? I can't understand why more people aren't busting a nut to get this damned thing. It isn't merely a white Xbox, you know. IMO Microsoft launched it too early....or Sony and Nintendo are launching too late. The thing isn't getting the recognition it deserves because everyone's waiting to see the other two first. I say screw it. Get one. November's a long way away.
I'll never say that old stuff should be shelved to make way for the new. I just spent the afternoon with Virtua Tennis on the Dreamcast since I don't have Table Tennis for my 360 yet. But man, the 360 spits out some unreal next gen eye candy that you just HAVE to experience.

Post E3 comment,
I'd wait until the price drop or Gears of War to come out before you drop the money bags for it.

That's true, I am really wanting to get one now, it's actually surprising how Microsoft has went above most expectations.
though if they had more JRPG's it would be great, that's the biggest flaw of the 360 lack of RPG's in a sense.
