I'm wondering if it's possible to mod a classic style or pocket GameBoy system with AV out. I realize that there are ways to get GB on a TV (GameBoy Player/ Super GameBoy), but this has to be on the system itself so it's portable because I'm looking to capture video from the GameBoy camera.

A Hi-8 Sony Video Walkman should be good enough to record with but I just need to find a way to mod the GB so it has Video Out. Anyone know if a mod like this has been attempted before? I looked around online and couldn't find any kind of info on it.

I had a mod kit for original GBA (GB camera works on it) that came out before the GameBoy Player was released. I bought from GameStop for... way too much money. It worked just okay though. Eventually I tried to removed it from the GBA, but I ruined both the mod and the GBA. :( I think that it was released by "Innovation". It looked like some cheap crap made in HK.

Brian Provinciano of Grand Theft Nintendo fame did something like this:

Of course, the most straightforward (and ultimately easiest) way of going about this would be to get a GBA to TV converter, Success HK has some for sale at around 30 USD.

I've never heard of a video out mod for a gameboy, but I'll look around a bit (I love mods!)

Here's how to transfer GB Camera images to your PC, it seems pretty easy. - [link (http://drx.a-blast.org/~drx/lo-tech/gameboy/howto/index.en.html)]

Holy crap, there must be a way, because this group is making movies entirely with the GB Camera (turns down/off the speakers, seriously, its AWFUL) - [link (http://www.johnnyrogers.ws/2bitepic/)]

Instead of giving the GB a video out, this fellow hooks his GB Camera to his laptop's parallel port - that might accomplish what you're looking for (seems a little complicated though) - [link (http://geocities.com/vjkemp/gbcam.htm)]

That's what I was thinking - I wasn't sure the GB Camera worked with a GBA.

But that's exactly what this guy (http://www.krisjohn.net/newcam.html) did. He's got it set up as a USB webcam, but you could just as easily hook it to any other video in.

Here's some GB Camera videos that seem to have a bit of colour to them - unless its just artifacts from compression. Careful though, the second video is absolutely 100% NSFW!!! - [link (http://www.monomusik.de/main.htm)]

edit: Geeze, what is it with NSFW GB Camera stuff? [link (http://www.sito.org/~ed/gameboy/ashley/)]

Thanks for all the links, guys. That GBA TV Converter you posted Bratwurst is probably my best bet. All those other options won't really work though since the GBA has to be portable and with those, it's gotta be tethered down to something. I don't own a GBA though...does the cart fit on the top or bottom of the system? If it's up on top, I should be fine but it doesn't look like there is any room on bottom for a GB Camera if it's supposed to go down there.

I actually already have an accessory that lets you transfer GB Camera pics over to your PC. I think it's made by MadCatz but I've never been able to use it because 1). It's made to be used with PC's and I have a Mac and 2). it requires that your computer has a parallel port adapter which aren't even on new computers anymore.

As a cool little side note, this guy here was able to take color pics with the GBC. Once I get my Intell Mac, I'll start messing around with this too:

It should fit okay. The TV component hugs the bottom, and the camera loads onto the top. Getting a GBA should be super cheap nowadays since they've remodeled it twice so far (btw, I don't think the SP or micro can use that tv-out component - the camera would be upside down in any event).

What if you picked up an old shitty windows 98 laptop? It wouldn't have to be powerful at all, and would likely be super cheap too.

Nork, the original GBA is a top-loading system so the camera should work with it. They're also fairly cheap now, 20 bucks generally. It assigns color to older GB software but there's a mode you can get by holding certain buttons on boot up to achieve the classic greyscale style.

I have one of these myself but haven't had the time to install it. Reviews online suggest they're better than the original TV de Advance iteration.

In all my life I never thought I'd see that type of stuff with gameboy camera

Another cool thing I've seen people do with the Game Boy Camera is take color photos by using filters and recombining the color information afterwards. As I recall, the expensive part is buying an infrared filter - you need more than just colored cellophane to do this. And of course your subject needs to be something that you can take three identical photos of.

I remember reading about a mod for either GB or GBC that allowed the system to output to a CGA monitor.

This guy has managed to get RGB out from a GBA using a GBA Transverter, and wire in a Neo pad socket! Check this (http://www.konlabs.com/articles_data/gba_console/index.htm).

So yeah, you can get RGB Scart from a GBA with some fiddling. And the very clever chappies over at SMSPower! have managed to get RGB out of a GameGear too. Just need someone to figure out how to do this to a NGPC now. I'd love to play SvC:MotM on a big screen.
