View Full Version : N is for gaming?

This has bugged me for so long my obsession with it has kinda boiled over into an uncontrollable urge to rant.
Why are there so few classic games and classic series beginning with the letter N? (Not counting NES Classics here, which would be cheating). There are loads of Ss, Ts, Rs, but for N you only really have Ninja Gaiden and NiGHTS. Hell, even the Qs have Quake, X has Xenosaga/Xenogears/Xenon 2 (remember that? :-D ).
For such a common letter, you'd have thought the Ns would be better represented. Or maybe I've finally cracked.
550 games in my collection and only 6 Ns. Typical.

These come to mind:
(The) New Zealand Story
Ninja Spirit
Nebulus
Neutopia
Nectaris
I'm probably forgetting some major ones but overall I would probably agree. "N" seems to be lacking compared to other relatively common letters.

NBA Live Series
NBA 2k series
NBA Street Series
NFL2K series
NHL 2K series
NHL series
Night Driver
Ninja Golf!!
Yeah most of those are sports, but people buy them every year, there's a lot of "N" games, just maybe not of the action / platformer type.

Upon looking, I have 60 games in my collection where the first letter is an 'N' which equals out to be about 4% of my collection.
Funny thing, the number one happens to be roughly 4% of the number 26.

Ninja Gaiden, Nightmare on Elm Steet, Nightshade (I originally put Nightstalker, thinking of Nightshade and Darkstalker...silly me!), and North and South are the only ones that come to mind...they're all on the NES too...conspiracy???
8-)

Hmmm, I've never noticed that until now. Ignoring the NHLs/NBAs/NFLs/etc, the only N game I can think of that doesn't suck and hasn't been mentioned is the Namco Museum series.

Doesn't bug me that much. I'm sure if you really looked at it from afar, there's really not that much of a diviation.

Actually, I thought about this idea and ended up agreeing. There aren't many truly classic N's. Maybe Ninja Gaiden...
N is even one of the giveaway letters on the last round of Wheel of Fortune: It's that common.

There's Nemesis for the Game Boy as well (okay, it's part of the Gradius series, but yeah).

Wow, no mention of Ninja Warriors (ARC) or Ninja Warriors (SNES, also known as The Ninja Warriors Again in some territories). Those were some fun games.

All excellent games, well, besides Combat. Forgot Ninja Warriors though.
LOL @ what Jumpman Junior said - I think he's onto something there.
Of course, some letters naturally start more words in English. Look at a set of encyclopedias (or flip open a dictionary) some time and you'll see roughly how it breaks down.

Just for fun, I took the liberty of removing every game with an acronym starting with "National". While I was at it, I took out "Ninja," "Night," and "NES" (the last one because I figured you wouldn't have any "NEO's" :P):
NARC
Nexar, The Challenge of
Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing
Nintendo World Cup
Nobunaga's Ambition
Nobunaga's Ambition II
North & South
Nosferatu
Nova Blast
These are your "net N's" and count toward your daily N intake. Your net N's are at precisely 15%, so you're in very good shape.

At first I thought this topic was kinda retarded... then on a whim I decided to check my own collection list. Out of 330 RPGs I own exactly one title starting with the letter N, and that is "Nightmare of Druaga, The: Fushigi no Dungeon".
