Thinking about buying a loose copy of Stadium Events from someone online. How would I (or he) tell that the game is NTSC? Also - what should I pay for it? :P

Check infront of the label for the code. If it says something like NES-XX-USA its the NTSC version. If it have the letter "B" on it and some german text its the PAL version.

Both Pal and NTSC are identical in term of gameplay but they changed the names of some games and cover art for the other countries. Get a top loader so you can play PAL only games like asetrix and hammerin harry and rodland. Cool games that never saw the light of day over here

Some games may have the same gameplay but there are certain in-game differences such as new sprites or full translations for some games. Contra and Super C, for example, turned into Probotector and Probotector II, where they replaced the humans with robots ;) Quite a few games were also fully translated into other languages.

Also, a toploader doesn't play all of the PAL exclusives. Asterix, for example, as well as a bunch of others, will have severe graphical glitches on a toploader making it pretty much impossible to play the games ;)

Still worthwhile to get the PAL exclusives tho :)

Games that are PAL will run faster on a NTSC machine and vise versa. The reason is because the CPU on the NTSC machines are alittle faster than the PAL machines. I think its because of the 50/60Hz. In some games you hardly notice and diffrence, but try to play Contra Force on a PAL machine, fucking slow hehe :(

As Speedy_NES mentioned, some games do have glitches. This is because all NES games are coded in ASM (machine code). I dont know why the glitches appears in some games, but i guess its because of the CPU, since its not the same.
