I got a couple of broken PS2's recently, one of them took me approx 20 mins to fix, the other I am having major problems with.

It read CD's (PS1, PS2 CD, Music) very quick.
It read game DVD's with a small delay
It read DVD movie with a huge delay

Now its clicking a lot, and stopped reading anything, I adjusted the white wheel to the rear of the laser unit, and now it reads CD's.

DVD movies dont work no matter what setting ive tried, I marked the original setting so ive been trying different turns of the cog.

Game DVD's are now working, but you have to eject when it refuses to play, and then put it in again, it then makes a few "bleep" "bleeeep" noises and plays with a small delay

Any ideas?

Also the other more major problem is the part where the controller port ribbon clips into the mainboard. Someone has obviously pulled this really hard, and the arm which holds the ribbon to the mainboard is snapped, they have folded up a spare ribbon cable and pushed it under the clip to try and hold the ribbon cable in... its not working and so the controller ports do not respond (as the cable is loose)

Any ideas?

Thanks guys in advance. Im not concerned with getting DVD movies to work as I want to use the PS2 for games only, I just need to get it playing DVD games more reliably, and fix the controller port problem and it should be really good then!

Any luck with the clicking? I have a very similar problem. Game boots up (tekken tag), select arcade, select first player, start to select 2nd player and it kind of hangs for about 5 seconds then you hear a loud clicking noise in which now nothing happens except that noise and you can hear it's obviously having some trouble.

I'm guessing your problem is similar, let me know if you figure out a way around this.

I was having problems with PS1 discs and DVDs and had to disassemble the unit and clean the laser with a q-tip and alcohol. Just make sure when you initially open the PS2 to open it carefully as there is a small silver ribbon cable connecting your power/reset buttons with the console itself. If you are careful you will see what I mean before you do any serious damage. All you need is a phillips screwdriver and a set of precision screwdrivers and the rest is just some TLC for your laser. Hope that helps and PM if you need any additional info.

the problem when your ps2 laser starts to click isnt the laser lens itself its the alignment of it, lift of the ps2 laser module from the 2 rods and whipe off all the goo (this is the problem) reassemble and try. if it still doesnt work your discs reflect to badly and you might need to gridcalibrate your laser lens by tuning the small pots on the underside of the laser unit itself.. (easier fix is to replace the laser itself, there are 3 types of lasers)
