I don't know of any, but that would really be cool. Forget memorizing boss patterns!

Shitloads, man, shitloads! From simple JAVA games to pretty darn in-depth shooters. I'll see if I have any sites saved and post them when I get to my PC. I know I downloaded a cool & free Zaxxon clone that's not an .exe file as well. I'll see if I can find it.

If you are looking to play shmups online with a friend, your best bet is to use kaillera and roms.

Here's the zaxxon game...

I thought I had some links for some free online shooters but it seems I do not. I'd just go looking for "free online games" or the like on google. There are hundreds. Some simple, some complex with 3-D graphics.

Well, the first place you should go to hunt down some FPS on-line action games is google. Just search up on-line shooters or something and you'll be good to go. Some games I'd suggest though are:

Half-Life 1/2/Counter Strike-
Counter Strike is one of the largest communities so if you want a place that's active hit this game up. The newest one with Half-Life 2 is highly graphic intensive and need to handle with care. Expect lots of gameplay and options.

Quake 4-
Another great game that's new and should be used for people with up-to-date systems. Haven't had a chance to play it but looked decent from what I saw.

F.E.A.R.-
Graphic intensive. Be sure to have a hard working computer and nice video card to enjoy this puppy. Only played the demo but it just kicks major ass. I think it's a sure win to please any FPS in you.

Unreal-
Any of their games will do, all still have some population. If you're on an older computer get the Gold edition of the original. If you have a newer computer go with Turnament or 2004. All are fun and nice though. Although the older versions are a bit polygonal the body parts go flying with blood just as good as any other title.

Battlefield 2-
I know lots of my friends LAN with this game and it's realistic. If you have a REALLY nice computer that can play on high resolution, framrates, and fast game speed with a large 21"+ HD monitor and surround sound, expect some spactacular gameplay!

Of course make sure you look around. Those are just a few games that I'm most familiar with right now. Like I said with Google, look around and maybe you'll find some games that aren't in the mainstream that are gold! ;)

Shmups and FPS are two different genres.

Shmups are flying around and shooting things, usually in 2D.

Yep and its a helluva lot of fun. My friend and I bet Metal Slug 1-3 and we played Gigawing 2.

There are no online shooters (other than through emulation) however many arcade shooters ( and at least one console shooter that I can think of ) have the online ranking scheme, where your score generates a code. You post the code on their website, and your score is displayed. The Arcade version of Shikigami no Shiro III currently does this.
