my "wonderfull" roomate had just asked me a question about whether galvatron ever turned back into megatron, and I decided to dig out my box of transformer comic books to skool him on megatron/galvatron.

I was surprised to find some neat things in my tf comic box that I totally forgot about.

amoung the stuff in there was the large boxes for bomberman and earthbound (omg complete!!) but I also found my old limited edition maximum carnage box set, and I thought i'd share. i've never seen anyone mention this before so again heres some pictures:
(insanedavid plase avert your eyes as this may be painfull to you;-))

Wow, very cool. I've never seen or heard of one before. Is there only the game, outer box, certificate and that book? Also, what exactly is in the book?

The book is the first few issues of the maximum carnage comic that the game was based on.

(edit)
theres also 3 pins of spidey venom and carnage, they didn't come out so well in the pic though.

There's a guy over in Britain on evilBay. He has a store and sells rare stuff; his ID is dojar or dozar.. something like that. Anyway.. he had a a sealed NTSC set like this and as I recall a few weeks ago it was still available at a price of somewhere between $200 to $300 as I remember. I would have BIN'ed if I had that kind of money to spend on one game.. I thought it was worth it. Haven't seen it lately.. but I'll look. Yours and his are the only I've ever seen. Odd how rare and valuable especially considering loose copies of MC gor for next to nothing on eB.

very cool. I too have never seen anything like it.

It's because loose copies probably come from the standard version.

Found the guy! (it took some time because he is currently "inactive").

eBay iD is dojar and his store is called "dojars Rare Sega Console Games".

He currently has no items for sale in his store; but he had a crapload a few weeks ago.. Power Seller.

You might want to IM him for more info on this. As I recall.. isn't this listed in the guide also? I swear I saw it in the online one somewhere.

nope, in the comic book they were different entitities...kinda

the comic galvatron is a time traveler from an alternate future (the movie didn't happen in the comic)

its very confusing ;-)

... I thought there was only a limited edition release on the Genesis, not the SNES. Wow. I mean, a while back someone posted an auction on the Everything eBay forum, and the case was different. I don't think it was cardboard (yours looks like that). Of course, it was the Genesis version.

You'd think that Marvel would bundle the entire Maximum Carnage storyline in there. Eh. If only the story didn't suck so much...

Hm, funny that you mention this, because I found all of my Maximum Carnage comics in the back of my Transformers comic longbox last summer.

Anyways, nice find.

spoon won that auction, and i've had the privilege of seeing his... it's really beautiful. presented just like the snes one there, but with a genesis cart. i don't think it had the normal retail box though. i think he paid around $100 for his genesis one...

This has come up a couple of times in the past if anyone wants to search the archives.
From what I remember, there were 5000 copies of both the SNES & Genesis versions made, and that they were sold via QVC or some similar shopping channel. I don't know if this was the only way they were sold, or if this was just a way of liquidating excess copies.

I'd be interested in seeing any evidence that the box is different to the standard one - I was under the impression that they were the same.

And I certainly wouldn't pay the kind of prices dojar was asking for his - he bought it through eBay for about $30, then stuck it straight back up for sale at $150. He's well known for having some truly awesome stuff, but overcharges for almost all of it.

I'm with a few others on here not knowing of any such release, but I'm not suprised due to my large lack in knowledge of special edition releases and more uncommon titles. Since I didn't grow up surrounded by many video games, magazines, and watching tv shows with commercials aimed towards selling games there is a gap in product knowledge that I hope will slowly close up due to being in such communities as this one.

But once again, that's a REALLY nice collectors edition of the game. I really love the case that holds it all in and the layout of the inside. I don't blame you to be pissy about "HOW MUCH IS THIS WORTH" garbage because personally I'd hang onto that the longest I could.

It was definatly a qvc exclusive, I remeber watching the "sale" for it and begging my mom to let me get it back then (didn't have a credit card at the time) it didn't sell out..so i've always bee curious to how many of those 5000 actually got sold and what happened to the rest, i'm unsure if the game is 100% identical to the relased box (I should try to get a release copy to see)

If you can post a scan/pic of the front & back cover, I'm sure someone else will have the standard version for comparison.

So, uh... don't get angry at me, but how much did this cost when you bought it? I don't mean its current value, I mean its value back then, when it was for sale at QVC.

I think SNES games went for around $49-$59, and I can't imagine that thing costing any less than that in those days.

My local comic book store "Quality Comics" in Perth Australia had one of the SNES boxsets in 97 and boy did they want a crapload of money for it, even if the game included was ntsc.

Look: http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.item.E8382

There's even still information about the box set on QVC's site!

But still not the information I was looking for...

I have the set here, it's sealed. Which is great of course!

But... Seeing as the Genesis Set and the SNES Set don't show any difference on the outer box... How would I know for sure mine is the SNES version? :) Without opening it of course!!

It has a sticker on the seal that says:

1 - UNIT
QVC ITEM #E8382-000-626
QVC P.O. #037366

I assume the 626 means I got #626/5000? :)

Wow, looking at that QVC listing, this set would have been almost $100 originally with shipping. I can't believe there were 5,000 people who would have bought it 15 years ago. I wonder how many went unsold?

I don't think $100 was a bad price back then?

I remember I got SNES games for 170 NLG (Dutch guilders :P) back then.

For video games, $100 was virtually unheard of in the mid-90s, at least in the US. That's the equivalent of $145 in today's dollars. Remember, collector's editions were very unusual and certainly were not at the price levels they are today. Even the biggest cartridge RPGs only hit $80 or so if I recall correctly, with most being in the $60 or under range. There were a couple of more expensive RPGs maybe as much as $100 (I recall maybe Phantasy Star IV and maybe one or two others), but their prices fell very quickly. Even with those high MSRPs, many retailers gave at least some discount just like they do today, so almost $100 from QVC would have been a heck of a lot of money for one mediocre game and a few inexpensive pins and a book thrown in a box. I think it's neat, but I'm guessing not even close to the full 5,000 units sold which I suppose might make this even more rare depending on what happened to the unsold copies.

QVC was huge back then. It's unlikely they had any problem moving 5000 units of each. Even ignoring the mediocre video game, it's Spider-Man merchandise.

I think it was actually 5,000 total, but given how infrequently it turns up, I kinda doubt they moved them all. Even QVC got stuck with stuff from time to time. It was either QVC or HSN that had trouble moving all those Aladdin Deck Enhancers for the NES which is how they ended up becoming a lot less valuable once they started popping up through liquidators and Video Game Connections.

Wow, that's a really cool set!

I bet you could sell it for a mint to someone in Japan.
I remember seeing the standard US SNES cart selling for like $140!@_@

I believe the set actually did sell out during the hour show that it was sold on (I ordered mine very early on in the show) and i'm almost positive it did sell out. remeber spidey was very popular at the time.

I don't know, it looks like they sold it on their website for quite some time as the game was released in 1994 and apparently QVC didn't even have a sales website until 1996 according to several history sites I have been looking at. It's possible they sold their hourly allocation, but I doubt they moved 5,000 units in an hour of something this expensive and niche.

Ah, some more information.

#E8382-000-627 = SNES version
#E8382-000-626 = Genesis version

Found a thread from a guy selling the sealed SNES version. http://www.nintendoage.com/auth/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=6&threadid=101070

Mine is the -626, which is the Genesis version.

These do not pop up often. Back in 2007 when I was hardcore about collecting SNES. I had to wait over a year until I saw one pop up. However rare they might be, they are not particularly desired because its pretty unknown edition of a very common game. I will say that even though the red cart is considered the Limited Edition, the gray cart much harder to find.
