I love speed runs.
Thanks for posting this.
There were a few times I thought he was gonna die, but of course he didn't LOL
edit: what the hell happens at the end of the speed run for Atlantis o Nazo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obaQHlCvzkk&search=Contra%20Speed%20Run%20NES)??? It's only 2:40, so if someone could shed some light on it I'd appreciate it :eek 2:

OMG! This is so crazy! How much time do you have to put into a game before you know exactly where to take a hit to advance a few minutes forward like that? Time after time! And he makes the game look easy in other parts that I fought and fought against!
Thanks for posting this. :)

You saw the ending
You get the big gem or whatever...the screen goes congratulations, little buddah guy shows up...time runs out, you die...and then you play the level again
Noone afaik has ever found an ending other than that

atlantis no nazo continues on, you can go into new areas after you beat "final zone"
I beleive the challenge is much like in pitfall, you need to collect all the treasure chests, i've come very very close, but its a rather large challenge.

That's very impressive.
If y'all are familiar with or a fan of save state-assisted movies, there's also a Castlevania run that's 11:41.

Behold, the power of 8-bit glitches to jump to another platform with ease!

Speed runs are always fun to watch. Gotta say, it's nice to see a run of the original Castlevania. I wonder how many times dude had to play that game to know the ins and outs of everything. Dude, had that game mastered. Didn't even die at all. I can't believe how easily he owned Death and Frankin Stien. Crazy good stuff. 8-)

How can there be a thread on speed run movies without mentioning the holy grail of speed run websites??
http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/
AMAZING stuff there. I've spent ungodly amounts of time at that site.

Many of those speed runs were made by using savestates and multiple backtracking. This Castlevania video seems legit... I wonder, was it recorded to VHS? The bleed on the image seems to suggest so... though it could be caused by the compression.

This was quite a treat to watch. Always loved this game. Only beat it once but it's a classic. Would love to see a speed run of Castlevania 3.

Not "many," ALL of the speedrun videos on Bisqwit's site are tool-assisted. They're meant just to be artful and entertaining, not passed off as legit. You can't really compare them to speedruns done by good players in one playthrough. They're like two different things.
But I like Bisqwit's site. I have a lot the movies on my harddrive, and since you can download them as key-press recordings, they don't take up much space.

EDIT
The one I had posted is the wrong one. The good one seems to be missing from google video now. That makes me sad. :(

I used to do those glitch jumps all the time in CV, ever since I was 10 years old back in '88, though I really only did in in level 2...the only place where it shaves off a significant amount of hassle. The others I had done before, but not on purpose...since I never did a speedrun of the game, they were really negligible, since you'd save a max of 3 seconds on them, and lose too much life.
I used to be able to beat CV on one life. I can regularly make it to level 5 or 6 on one life, but sometimes I messup and die once or twice. I can almost always beat it w/o continues. Great speedrun, though!

I pretty much always use the glitch jumps on levels 1 and 2. That's damn damn good playing though - I like how he misses the first jump there, just to make you think "oh I can play better than this" LOL
Stuff like jumping over the dogs while going the other way...quite possible, but you need to be really good. The little stuff like this makes CV just such a great, timeless game. You can pour a lifetime of play into it and still never do this well.

Wow, awesome video. That is one of my favorite NES games, though I was never able to get through the next to last boss, Death. Thanks for posting that.

Ditto. Maybe they're sticking some kind of time limit on non-registered users? I dunno.... :hmm:
I dont recall registering & I was able to watch the whole thing.
I STILL hate those damn flying Medusa heads!

LOL I went and started playing this game last night in an attempt to do some of the things that are done in the video...it didn't work out quite as well as on the video :P

I never knew you could just holy water the bosses and it would freeze them in place like that. I might have to give that a try. Might finally be able to beat Frankentstein.

No no no. I was referring to YouTube as a whole, not that specific video.
Previously, YouTube only had a file size limit for uploaded videos, which, using the right compression, meant that entire episodes of old tv shows could be uploaded. This past week, the site created a 10-minute time limit on top of the size limit. That means that great videos like this (which runs for 14+ minutes) are now not able to be posted.
Of course, as shown here, older files are grandfathered in.

Huh. I actually kinda play Castlevania like that normally. I always use Holy Water to freeze the bosses and I always use the "have the medusa head knock you upwards through the platform" shortcut in stage 2 (my friend Warren discovered iy accidentally years ago). Of course, this guy's still WAY faster than me!

There's a Japanese replay site called "High level Challenge!" Wherein you can see some pretty amazing things, several "no miss" runs that were actually savestate assisted, (It's all emulator input movies) but there are many that are made on emulators with no savestate/replay feature, or the state count in the movie file is 0. There's one guy, called Dokokalaki, the most amazing game player I've ever seen. He finishes Castlevania III without ever taking a hit, (0 save count) And I think he also finishes Castlevania IV without taking a hit, on a SNES emulator with no save/replay functions. Lots of other neat stuff too.
