I am wondering about the long term exposure of a CD to goo gone. I was trying to remove a blockbuster label off a disc. The kind that cover a whole disc. I was actually successful in doing this once before. The hardest part is getting it "started". Well, I couldnt get this label started, so I decided to soak the cd in goo gone for about an hour and 45 minutes. Afterwards, when I tried to scrape at the label again, the disc broke. I was putting a little bit of pressure on it, but certainly not enough to break it normally, I dont think. I am wondering if the goo gone made the CD brittle or not.

Either way, I am out one copy of Roadsters for the Dreamcast. Not a rare game, but I suppose not too common either.

Ive seen long term exposure to goo gone melt off the surface plastic of NES and Genesis cart plastic.

How long term are you talking about. Apparently there are other substances similar to goo gone that are much more damaging.

I still cant believe I broke the game. I have never broken a game before.

If i remember correctly, goo gone contains acetone... which melts plastics. I wouldn't soak anything important in that stuff.

I remember a long time ago we had a "Goo Gone on top of discs?" thread but if I remember correctly it was something different than this thread (wasn't about long term exposure). I also remember all I could do was laugh when reading through it based upon my experences in the past.

I've had PlayStation games that worked great, but had sharpie on the top of them. So I got out the Goo Gone and scrubbed it off. After that, the disc would not read at all in one instance and in another instance the disc would skip and eventually hang. In both cases the discs were much more flexible afterward. That was it, no more using Goo Gone for CD cleaning. I use a white eraser to remove such things now, works great - no damage.

Well, I have used goo gone on smaller labels with no adverse effect. Of course I always wash with water afterwards. I wonder if lighter fluid would be an acceptable alternative. It makes me want to do some tests with blank CDs.
