Found N64 Promo Tapes (With Firefly's Nathan Fillon)

I came across these today at a local thrift store amidst all of the crappy workout tapes and children's movies. They sold VHS for $2.00 a tape or (like in this case) 3 for $5.00. It benefits local schools, so it's cool with me. I'm putting this in the 'finds' thread, also, but I was wondering if anyone knows the story behind these. Did they come with subscriptions of Nintendo Power, or where they played on TVs in game stores?

Anyone know?

The StarFox tape has Nathan Fillon who played Captain Mal Reynolds in "Firefly" and "Serenity." He plays a test pilot for Nintendo's StarFox development team who gets captured and interegated by two henchmen from Sega and Sony.

I have the banjo kazooie one. Came with a subscription to nintendo power back when the game was released. Also got the guide with it I think.

I got these in the mail LONG after my NP subscription ended. I must have been kept on their list. The vids are pretty interesting to watch if you're a fan of the N64 and those games, but they're not really worth anything or are too terribly rare. I see those all the time in thrift stores/yard sales/flea markets. There's also a Zelda and a DKC one, I reckon.

I can confirm that there was a DKC one, never saw Zelda though.

There was also an early N64 one... mostly detailing Mario 64 right before the time of launch.

I see those tapes all the time at the flea market... mostly from Star Fox 64, Zelda, and some Yu-Gi-Oh vids.

Most of the time those videos were sent with NP subscriptions (I remember getting the DKC one with an issue one month) but a few of them were sent out as just promotional items to random people who have registered products at one point or another. I know that was the case with at least the Pokemon one.

There is a DKC one, I have it. I also have the Banjo. Picked these up thru "Videogames" at the market.
The Hot Newz was given out at our local Blockbuster- I had a dozen or so at one time.

I actually found two N64 promo tapes recently. One of them was the bottom one in the first pic. I only bought one, though, so I'll have to take a look and see which it was.

I received the Donkey Kong Country videotape in th mail a long time ago. I never had a NP subscription, but they got my address when I bought a SNES and had to mail away for the free Super Mario All-Stars cartridge.

I have the DKC one and the Starfox one. Pretty crappy stuff. I don't think they're worth anything.

But, if you have a curiosity for such things, I suppose they're worth owning. The guy in the Starfox video acts like a total dork when he feels the Rumble Pack for the first time. Like "OH CRAP! WHAT WAS THAT SORCERY?" "That's the Rumble Pack." "TOTALLY AWESOME @#$#@$^%!"

I have some of those. I remember they showed a sneak peak for Killer Instinct at the end of the DKC video. I had some other ones but I don't remember which. They may still be around.

I also got this tape when the game launched, and even then I knew the acting was horrible... but that lends to it's charm, in an over the top 70's Batman kind of way. One scene can sum it all up... a Mario doll being tortured with a car battery. Classic.

We had three copies of the Donkey Kong Country tape. Although we did have a subscription to Nintendo Power at the time, I believe they sent us the videos based on an old Nintendo Fun Club list (My older brother, sister, and I all had Nintendo Fun Club memberships way back when).

//moving off topic// I kept all our Nintendo Fun Club magazines along with Nintendo Power, Gamepro, and our EGM for a long time. That is, until I sold the whole lot to some kid for 30 bucks. Of course, now that I've seen some of those stupid magazines go for silly money on eBay, I wish I had mine back! X_x :(

I picked up a couple of these the other day too. I got an N64 launch tape and a N64 Sports tape. I'll have to look out for that Star Fox one, FireFly was a great show.

Upon further review, I'm not 100% sure it's Nathan Fillon. My girlfriend says no and she's pretty good at ID-ing actors out of their usual context. I still think it's him, though. Just not sure.

I have tons of these looping in-store demo tapes for the N64 and GameCube. They're from my years as a gold level Nintendo dealer. I watch them from time to time just for fun.
