Final Fight and Double Dragon are the first ones that comes to mind.
Trying to still wake up and function so I can't think of others at the moment.
Oh! Battletoads was pretty fun from what I remember. :)

Is AvP any good on the SNES?

Peacekeepers comes to mind. Not the best, but pretty good.

The Genesis probably had better beatemups, I would say.

No. Stinky side scroller. Not the excellent Capcom beat 'em up. Stay far away.

It is a tough call, but I lean toward Final Fight 3 as the best SNES beat 'em up. The original is too neutered and lacks a two player mode. Final Fight 2 is not very good, though it has two player. The Peacekeepers (aka Rushing Beat Syura) is the best in the Rushing Beat/Rival Turf series, but Final Fight 3 is better.

TMNT IV is also spectacular, but much simpler in design.

In terms of beat 'em ups at large, the arcade version of Final Fight may be considered king, but I think Bare Knuckle/Streets of Rage 2, though derived from Final Fight, is the supreme overlord of the genre.

AvP sucks as BEMs go, King of the Dragons is a awesome sleeper, TMNT IV, Final Fight series, King Arthur Knights of the Round is good, Legend is fair but not great, Maximum Carnage, and we are all forgetting Batman Returns.

just stay away from rival turf at all costs.

Super Double Dragon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, and Ninja Warriors would be my top picks. There's quite a wide variety of good beat em ups on this system. Although I think the Sega Genesis got the best 16-bit beat em ups (SoR trilogy, nuff said), the SNES tends to have a larger selection of quality ones.

Note: Ninja Warriors doesn't have free 360 degree movement like most beat em ups. It has a single plane system, kind of like Bad Dudes and Two Crude Dudes, except those two generally had two planes to jump to at all times.

I would pick Super Punch-Out. I'm sure a boxing game isn't what you were really looking for but they are fighting...and it's one of my favorite SNES games.

Final Fight and Turtles in Time :) I also like Battletoads & Double Dragon and Super Double Dragon.

Final fight 1. But the Sega Cd version is MUCH better: 2 player simultaneous, guy is in there, 2 extra levels from the arcade game + CD music.

Good call man! I always forget about that one and it is incredible. Excellent graphics and well-balanced gameplay.

Disagree. I thought this game got a bad rap when really, it's not THAT bad. In fact, I rather enjoyed it. Also, considering how common it is, and how cheap it is, $3-$5... it's worth picking up if you're a fan of the genre.

I haven't seen:

Brawl Brothers
Combatribes
Sonic Blastman 1 and 2

mentioned. These are pretty good. I especially love The Combatribes, have a soft spot for that game, though it does have a certain acquired taste.

I also say STAY FAR AWAY from SNES Alien vs. Predator. My gosh, what a horrible game.

Oh yeah, Adventures of Batman and Robin is pretty cool!

I LOVE this game. It's apart of the Rushing Beat (thanks for the correction) series and by far the best of the bunch. I love the alternate pathways and the character depth.

I remember EGM giving this game a low score because it lacked music. Apparently they never checked the options menu because in order to hear the games music, you must turn the music ON. I guess the programmers wanted to show off the games amazing background noises and sound effects so they left the music off from the get go.

another vote for the Rushing Beat Trilogy.

Rival Turf is basically a Final Fight clone but with 2p play (which was the reason we originaly bought it with our SNES) and Brawl Brothers and Peacekeepers were just flat out fantastic (imo of course; this thread proves that your mileage may vary :))

If you're into the whole "hey downloading roms is a-ok" thing, then feel free to check out the japanese version of The Peace Keepers for some better artwork (especially during the super moves...whatever they're called) or grab a patch for the US version (http://underworld.fortunecity.com/virtua/513/noframe6.htm). Fuckin' A-1 good game.

also, comedy Gourmet Sentai Bara Yarou (http://www.omgjeremy.com/gourmet.shtml) option.

I don't know if you're into importing games or playing roms on your computer at all, but If you get the chance you should really try to track down a copy of either Shin Nekketsu Kouha: Kunio Tachi no Banka (http://www.vgmuseum.com/images/04/shin.html) or Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun (http://www.angelfire.com/games3/johnnyundaunted/shodai/). They're both part of the River City Ransom/Shin Nekketsu Kouha series, and trust me, they're both boss beat 'em ups.

Yeah Turtles in Time is great. Fight Final really needed co-op.

I love TMNT IV: Turtle's in Time. It's one of my favorite games for the SNES actually.

Combatribes

Good choice! I was going to mention The Combatribes myself, but I felt like limiting myself to just three choices. I think of it as a complete overhaul to Technos's Renegade forumla. It plays a bit like Renegade, but everything is improved upon. It's also damn hard the first time you play it! It's a very rewarding challenge once you get the hang of the fighting system.

When I think of SNES beat 'em ups (BEUs) I immidiately think of TMNT IV: Turtles In Time. The game simply rocks. After reading this thread, it seems there's more to this genre on the SNEs than I thought. I guess I should try to find a copy of PeaceKeepers and a few other titles.

TMNT IV: Turtles In Time is the best SNES beat em' up in my opinion. Final Fight wins bonus points for nostalgic reasons, and being a good arcade port, but I don't think the SNES version of Final Fight holds up to TMNT IV's superior action.

I think one of the most underated SNES beat em' ups is most definatly Batman Returns. This games sprites are very impressive. Being able to smash enemies into store windows is so satisfying.

The Peace Keepers and Rival Turf / Rushing Beat are ok notables.

Sadly, two of my favorite SNES brawlers - Undercover Cops and Ninja Warriors Again - don't seem to be available in the U.S. in non-multilated forms (well, okay, I guess the ommision of female ninjas in Ninja Warriors was bearable). I've seen a U.S. box for Undercover Cops, but the game itself has never surfaced...

Of course, the Japanese versions of these games are incredibly expensive. Nice, complete versions of the SFC releases go for $90+ easily.

I'm also going to have to say "Turtles in Time".

The only time i can actually say i would rather play a beat-em-up on the SNES than the Genesis.

WTF was Konami thinking when they made "Hyperstone Heist"? It's kinda lame (and easy) and it really comes off as being watered down and slapped together from (mostly) parts from "Turtles in Time".

And this is coming from a guy who adores the Genesis.

The other games on the SNES that i have tried:

Final Fight 3 - I've tried all three and i think i enjoy this one the most.
Rival Turf - Really didn't like this game. I played it and thought "Final Fight" clone.

There might have been some others (i can't remember thier names) but i can remember not being thrilled when the slowdown started kicking in (which is why i played FF3 without the computer).

Battletoads vs Double Dragon

LOL

it's "and" not "vs." for the record. They team up, not fight one another. :P But yes, I liked it too.
