Does anyone know if a slimline PSOne imported from Asia or Japan will play all regions and backups of Playstation games like a full sized Asian or Japanese Playstation will. I'm thinking of getting one, and don't know if I should get a Japanese one, an Asian one, or a modded US one. I already have a modded PSX, but I want a slim one so I can give the old one to my sister. Also, an imported PSOne will play with a domestic LCD right?
Thanks in advance for your help.

All PlayStation are region coded. No matter where you get one, unless you modify it it will only play that's country's games.

Really, I could have sworn that the larger playstations from either Asia or Japan would play them without modding. One of my friends from way back bought one when he was in Hong Kong. Infact, to think about it, I knew two people with Asian Playstations, they both told me they didn't need to be modded to play US games or backups.

Could it be that those were the very first models that came out before any of the other regions did?

You're thinking of the pre-modded ones you buy from places other than official Sony stores in countries like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, China, etc.

edit - and to be fair, legit PS2 games are a fucking rip off in most of those countries.

Correctamundo. (Wow, never said that before. Probably never say it again.) I have a slimline JP PS1 and it does indeed only play JP games; however, it plays them better than my modded US PS1 does.

110% agreement with DB and PDF here, Official systems for any region/area will only play that code type, ie. NTSC-J (Japan and Asian markets), PAL (UK, Europe and Australia) and NTSC-U (The Americas, USA, Canada, Mexico and on down).
Your friends had purchased modded systems, either on purpose, or unwittingly. No retail PlayStation system released by Sony played all game types.

Cool, all this time I thought Asian playstations weren't region coded. They must have been modded in Hong Kong before they came to America.
