I have been a member of this Digital Press for some time now and it is time to hear from anyone out there that considers themself to be a Playstation 2 Collector.

If you are just filling this thread with garbage, please excuse yourself from the forum. Thank You!

My name is Chris and I live in Michigan. I am sure that I am not the only video game collector out there that might be attempting to collect all of the Playstation 2 titles. If you are collecting PS2 games, this THREAD IS FOR YOU!!!!!

I am over 1200 titles now. I own hundreds of demo discs and I even have all of the Official Playstation 2 magazine demo discs on hand. I currently own more ps2 crap than a garbage truck could hold in one trip, but my main focus is the Playstation 2 Video game library. freebies and little things are nice, but my main focus is to get every game made. I need them all to complete my library of Ps2 games.

I have a notebook that is sorted by SLUS and SCUS numbers. True collectors shoudl know what these letters stand for by looking at them and their collection. I have come across several label variations.

To those who dont know.....:label variations are what happens when a title gets reprinted or misprinted or added onto.

For Example.
Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition
1st print: Black spine playstation 2 label
2nd print: Red spine greatest hits Playstation 2 label Remix

MX World Tour
1st print: MX World Tour with Jamie Little on cover art
2nd print: Mx World Tour with some moto racer in cover art

the list goes on...how many can you name?

Surprised it's only been a month and a half since that thread.

I posted there I was at 128 US and 36 JPN titles, but now I'm at 150 US and 36 JPN titles.

My newest additions were Monster Hunter ($20 used) and Ultimate Spiderman Limited Edition ($20 new), and I'm contemplating picking up the .hack series of games. Shadow Hearts I and II are a bit tempting, but I honestly don't know if I'd ever play them :(

edit - oh, and I need a Silent Hill 2 Greatest Hits case. I have the GH game and a non-GH case because I wasn't paying attention when I bought it :( Any chance you have a spare kickin' around?

(hell, there's a couple of cases I need replacements on)

I haven't seriously got into collecting PS2 games yet, but i'm at 33 PAL games, 22 US games and 10 JPN games. Nothing outstanding in my collection, and i'm currently playing Shadow of the Colossus (PAL) and Saint Saiya The Sanctuary (PAL).
I also need some info on 'Gitarooman Preview' for the JPN PS2 if anyone knows any.

I was interested in seeing your PS2 collection and I'm sorry your previous
post degenerated into name calling and was locked. I don't know if you work
at a game store or a Blockbuster or something and that's how you were able
to collect PS2 cases, but I think it's a significant accomplishment in it's
own right to have gotten so many of them. There are those who collect game
magazines and demo's too and I've never really understood that, so I don't
consider what you're doing to be any less of an achievement.

Myself, I'm not really a collector per say. Meaning that I've never set a
goal of having a complete collection of anything, but I do play and I guess
that would be the first step to collecting someday. I think I'm around
350-ish PS2 games right now, counting the few imports I have.
I have a pic of them....

and I apologize for the bad photo, but I'm forced to store my games in
closets for the time being, much to the dismay of the missus! I've taken
to calling them my closets of despair as opposed to having a Room of Doom!

My real goal though is to have more Xbox games than PS2 games. Not because
I have any disrespect towards PlayStation, far from it! But because I had
owned a PS2 far longer than I owned an Xbox, which gave it a tremendous
head start, and I've gradually been catching up on my Xbox collection
(around 260-ish) using only the determining factor of getting the best
version of any particular title, no matter the system. I'm don't feel the
need to have doubles of any title unless there's a specific reason to and
when and if my Xbox collection surpasses my PS2 collection, that will be a
major milestone for me!

Good luck with your PS2 collection and let me say that I appreciated seeing
it while the pictures of it were up. And don't let anyone dismiss your
acomplishment! Having one of, if not THE largest PS2 case collection
in the world is something to be proud of. My hats off to you!

I don't collect PS2 games in general anymore like I did with PS1.. I only collect the PS2 games that are good titles to play and I don't double up on varying regions of the same game either.

My PS2 collection is:

87 PAL
31 USA
109 JPN

in contrast to my PS1 collection which at it's prime was hitting 1000 unique titles, and about 2300 games overall.

I've got 80ish PS2 games, maybe more now. If/once I buy a JPN PS2, that number is going to go through the roof with all of the beatmania, ddr, guitar freaks (need to mod my GH controller for that) and so many more. Probably why I'm holding off at the moment.

Got 127 compete PS2 games. Since I'm more of a collector, I mostly pick up the stuff that's hard to find or has unique gameplay (Firefighter F.D. 18, Choro Q, Gallop Racer). I love anything arcade or classic related like the Sega Ages collection and also Bemani games too.

Just got my PS2 moded, so there's a TON of imports that I'm going to pick up soon that I always wanted. First on my list is Akira Psycho Ball pinball and the Japanese Taiko Drum games.

I'm not sure if this variant made it to PS2, but while out at about 8 billion different game stores yesterday (7 hours of hunting) Perkar and I noticed Mega Man Anniversary Collection for GameCube has at least one variant. In the original there is the picture of Dr. Wily just under the title to the right, and in the variant instead of him there is a badge that says, "10 Games in 1!"

I'm not sure if it made it to PS2 or not though.

Gamecube and Xbox got variants... GC got the 10 games in one circle, while the Xbox got the Dr. Wiley (where the 10 games circle logo is) as a variant. There is no PS2 variant as far as i've ever seen.

Like I said in the other thread i've got a 'modest' collection in my eyes. I don't put into it what I used to, as space and money are much bigger concerns (and that i've got some better things to toss money at anyways).

I'm sitting at
370 PS2 games (before variants)
180ish PS2 demo's
a handful of Online Beta's and one actual full game beta.

Nothing to scoff at, but far from Uber in my mind.

my ps2 collection contains no japanese games, although i do have some authentic squaresoft display boxes for dragonquest 8 and romancing saga. they were at a vendor fair and i snagged them from a buddy. they didnt mind.

seriously though, sure there have been some pics of my empty cases, but we wont talk about them.

either way this is my trade list. it looks like papastu has returned his want list and he will be getting his items. i will update this list as soon as we make our deal and then the rest is open to whoever.

i was wondering if anyone was keeping track of the slus and scus numbers for ps2? do you have any numbers you were wondering what the title was? do oyu have any numbers that i dont know the number?

It just so happens I have a ps2 jampack vol. 10 laying around here.
Unfortunately this one doesn't have the case/cardboard sleeve, but I figured
that might not be a problem for you. I usually give my demo's away free as gifts
when I trade with people, so it's yours for free if you're still looking for it.

I was reading over your previous post where you were talking about variants
and you mentioned....

yes i do have variants. CITY CRISIS black spine...& name on spine

I have the black spined version and it always irked me alittle, much the way
my Saturn Astal does, to have a game with a blank spine. It was nice to find
out there IS a version with the title on the spine and I'll keep my eye out
for one from now on. Thanks!

But I think I might have to disagree with one of your assertion's, if I'm
undertanding it correctly....

also have the 1st and second namco museums games. the greatest hits
rerelease of the namco museum was the first GREATEST HITS TITLE to not have
the same SLUS# as the original

there are several cases that i have been noticing differnces on, but i do not know them all. sports titles are up there umong some of the ones that mess up most often. mvp baseball 2005 has 2 one says mvp baseball and the other says mvp baseball 2005 on the spine.
mx world has the cover art of jamie little and the cover art of some biker. not reversable covers like god of war

nhl 2004 has the cover art with the guy that killed some body and then the new cover art has a different player

the namco museums are different games and they have different covers but they share the same slus# wierd...

devil may cry 3 and then you have the remix

dub edition and then the remix

atv offroad fury 2 and then the not for resale cover art

shadow hearts and then the not for resale art

midway treasures all three have not for resale cover art

mortal kombat deception and not for resale cover art

im sure the list goes on, but if you know about any share them.

In my experiance, the "display" cases provided to Gamestop/eb generally have a "Display Copy Not For Resale" or something to that effect on them.

Is that how yours are, or are you actually stealing the retail cases?

either way. none of my games are stolen and if you dont know what a not for sale game looks like then you must not be a ps2 collector. so....stay out of this thread!

either way the cases from gamestop are computer generated cool things that no collector needs. a ps2 collector will collect the ps2 titles that interest them first and then the ones that are harder to find.

i just picked up pac man world 3 today. used for 19.99

not a hard one to find but someday maybe.....

playstation has released the golf simulator SLUS #21332 and i just added it to my collection. no its not just an empty box, but an expensive one. 69.99 for anyone not working at a gamestore. unfortunately my game store doesnt sell this one so i had to buy it at eb. i also saw it at target. why doesnt certain game stores buy all the games?

Your cases aren't the official marketing mockups from sony, but the inkjet printouts from gamestop?

Everybody collects something, and i can say for sure that your collection is unique.

EDIT: As for the golf game, it didn't come from Sony. It came from a company called In2Games. It also came out on the xbox. They're talking about releasing a boxing and a fencing game based off of the same motion tracking system (called gametrack).

As for why certain stores only carry some games. That decision is made by purcasing departments within major chain retailers. They decide whether or not a chain will carry a game. As for individual stores within a chain carying a game, that's left to distribution managers within shipping. They usually base those types of decisions on previous sales history, if golf games sell poorly in your store, you're unlikely to have any copies of "Real Golf". On the other hand, if you can't keep golf games in stock, you'll probably get a dozen copies.

Sales are king in this industry

in my opinion it is really too early to announce the rarest game for the ps2, but this topic could exist in this thread. What do you think is the rarest ps2 title?

please ebayers do not say something lame like world of outlaws sprint cars 2002 or marvel vs capcom or gitaroo man.

those titles are not rare.

ive got a factory sealed gitaroo man i purchased from media play for $15.99 i wouldnt pay more than that for the title......came across two or three more but bought them just for trade bait....same with marvel vs capcom 2

well. in my opinion one of the top rarest games for the ps2 at this time would have to be the Growlancer deluxe SLUS #20758 and #20759

this title was on eo fthe first title over 49.99 for the ps2 and only comes complete boxed with a bunch of cool stuff in side.....

any others you can think of..?

Alright, here you go.

I don't really collect retail ps2 games per se. I probably only have about a hundred.

What i do collect is PS2 alpha/beta builds. I have 250 individual titles in either alpha or beta form, many of these games i have multiple builds for.

I have probably another 75-100 gold submission builds, but i don't really try to collect those.

As for rarest games, I would put my vote in for the PlayStation Festival 2000 discs. They were a 10 disc set given to visitors for the PlayStation Festival 2000 in japan. The set was limited to a print run of roughly 800. The only reason the discs were made was to test the stamping procedures for PS2 discs and check the copy protection to make sure it really did work on retail units. The Festival discs were the first PS2 discs to be stamped. The event itself was something of a failure and had poor attendance. Many of the 800 discs were not given to visitors and were discarded later. Note, these were NOT given to the press who attended the event, they were only given to visitors who paid full admission price.

So if you'd like to talk about PS2 collecting, i'm more than happy to discuss.

I don't really collect retail ps2 games per se

this goes to show where the conversation is. this post doesnt focus on japanese games. as i say to my customers.....japan can keep their stuff in japan because the japanese want it more than we do.....that swhy we really would not consider the rare handout discs that you "the collector" are trying to say would be the rarest "US" playstation 2 games. please come back with your opinion of the rarest ps2 released in the usa. thank you for the free info though. very much so note worthy....

There's a minimum print run for US ps2 games at around 65,000 units, so there really isn't anything "rare" in the literal sense.

I could list about a hundred different games that had that size run. You already said you're not interested in the "valuable" games that go for big money on ebay, so i'll leave that out of the equation.

If you want "rare" PS2 titles, you either have to look overseas, or look at special promotional games.

ok....ebay games have no value.....people that use ebay as a price value for a game should not talk about ps2 when it comes to collecting. i have sold games on ebay and the games have sold well. these games are usually proven to be not rare (65000) in print? a not rare game is one that comes up so often in the used market that the value of the game should not be kept high.....

im not interested in ebay for a price....look at the dp price guide if you need a price on a rare game.....

rare games are just how often do you see them. myself i look for games everywhere i go. flea markets are an exceptional place to find good deals. these people could easily close down shop if you went by ebays standards. if every person out there could get 80 bucks for a marvel vs capcom 2 just like me then they would not care to have a flea market shop. marvel vs capcom 2 is a common game. gitaroo man is out of print but it is a common game as well. just go to eb games and ask how many times they get gitaroo man on thier shelves or marvel vs capcom 2.

japanese games do not count in the us market and when they get imported here they only hurt our market. sure we have a minimum of (65000) id like to know where you get your info....but the japanese games are nothing in our market but cool to own.

nes collectors .........final fantasy 1 nes 8 bit....or famicom which one costs more?

i have purchased final fantasy 1 complete for the nes 8 bit for like 18 bucks before. the famicom one cost me only 5 bucks plus shipping on ebay.......so how do you compare a complete game us to a complete game to japan...?

when the topic of rare was brought up....i was simply asking what the harder games to find have been for anyone out there collecting ps2 games.....not japanese crap...

again i testify that growlanser generations deluxe is my top pick at the moment. if there are 65000 of this title out there then there must be 65000 people that own it.... there was one print to my knowledge and no more ever intended. this game comes to the us as a port of a japanese series and never has been released in the us before under this title.

Ok, again just so i understand...

You're asking for the rarest PS2 game, based not on print run, but by how many times "YOU" see them in the wild? I'm not sure i can answer that question, but i'll try.

In that case, i think you'll find that a lot of the Disney PS2 titles won't turn up too often for YOU for three reasons. One, they tend to be owned by younger children, so they are damaged more often. Two, they tend to be at the minimum print runs allowed by Sony. Three, the people who buy them aren't the usual customers who trade in PS2 titles at gamestop/eb.

So there you go. If you want the "rarest" titles in the wild for the ps2 right now, look for games directed at children under the age of 6.

Somehow, i don't think that's the answer you wanted. If not, just tell me what game you want me to say is the R@RE!!! It would be a lot easier than this guessing game.

461 and growing. The newest addition was Starsky & Hutch, which I actually really enjoy. The game reminds me of Special Criminal Investigation. starsky and hutch is really a cool game. if you own a guncon hook it up and invite a buddy to play. the second player can shoot at things on the sides of the screen
mailboxes and other obsticles get you points for your tv score and look cool too!

just picked up sly cooper 2, urban reign and suikoden 5

nice titles to my collection. dont think ill open the suikoden 5 as per collecting status, but the sly 2 was a used game and i tried it out. kids game if you ask me, but still needed it. i also cam across team buddies and warcraft 2 for the ps1. both were single, but team buddies came with the bottom insert. just need to find the ins....anyone out there have it?

I'm at 529 PS2 titles as of yesterday, after adding Dragon Quest VIII and Kuon. Plus demos, betas, press kits, and every OPM disc for PS2 through June 2005. I also have original artwork (not display case or pre-release art) for hundreds more that I acquired from my previous employer. And boxes full of original PS2 Amaray cases. Most of the games can be seen in my Room Of Doom (http://videogamecollectors.com/gallery/l_lamb) album.

I mostly collect older games, but I do have 50 or so PS2 games that I have kept for play value. I recently sold off some of my more rare stuff, but am going to add to the collection here and there as time goes on. The PS2 will definately be abundant for a long long time!

As someone who has worked with both the 360 and the PS3, all i can say is that Sony will be lucky if they survive this console generation without selling off the "PlayStation" brand to an investment banker group.

They pissed a lot of developers off with the "innovative" controller. They pissed a lot of developers off with the price. They pissed a lot of developers off with the double SKU's.

And the fact that a single PS3 dev station costs roughly $60,000 means that it's well out of the realm of posibility for indy developers to pump out the hits.

I have nothing against Sony, but they have yet to show me ANYTHING that says their console is worth $600.

In all fairness, i should say that i haven't bought a 360 yet either.

360 : about $35,000 with all the bells and whistles. Give or take.

Wii : I don't work with Wii, but i've heard as low as $2,000 but i highly doubt that's for the high end dev station.

i just got my 299th and 300th PS2 game today, I finally picked up Kingdom hearts 1 & 2 at a pawn shop. got them both for $25.00. You have to love getting games from people who have no idea on how new games are or what to charge for them. Kingdom hearts was $6.00 and Kingdom Hearts 2 was a wopping $19.00.
I do plan on getting a bunch more tomorrow when i get paid, they had Devil May Cry 3 and Resident Evil 4 for $10.00 each. I hope they are still there.

and then a ton of PSone titles, a few crappy ones. So by any means I'm not *yet* a collector of PS2 games.

However, I'm quite currious how neonesmaster is a "collector". Works at a game store, gets lots of free cut-out stands and promos for games and has a bunch of PS2 titles (Most are empty?). Are you one of those bastards that steals those complete boxes and the manuals from the inside? And how do you get all this money to suddenly own so many PS2 games (If they are really complete) when you work at a game store? Do you live with your parents, $0 rent, ride a bike to the store and get free food? Spend 100% of your checks on games and steal what you can't afford? Selling drugs under the table? I mean come on, I'm lost. What's your secret?

A little on the side though, you do have a lot of misspellings and grammatical errors, in addition you seem to have some failed logic in your discussions (and throughout it BTW) so to say everyone else isn't intelligent (maybe because they figured you out) and acting like a child calling CosmicMonkey a "dick", I mean come on! I kinda liked the original thread, until it wallowed in the muck. Why? Well, mostly because it gave me a snapshot of what I had at the time, which I find amusing to compare to what I have now. But also 'cause I like reading about what others like to collect.

So what if someone likes to collect empty boxes? If you feel betrayed that he was misleading you then shame on *you* - this is the internet, you shouldn't believe *anything* you read anyway!

Now, for the next time I come across this thread, I'm gonna say this: After last time I actually took advantage of a Blockbuster trade-in deal and got some credit for some of my games (RPGs, compilations, generally stuff I wasn't happy playing anymore). I got rid of maybe a dozen games, which put me somewhere in the 50s for a total.

The last game I bought was Baldur's Gate II (finally) a week or two ago, which funnily enough put me back to 61. So I guess in the end I've done *nothing* since last time out :)
