I'm really into Cave games at the moment.... big time. ESPGaluda II, the most recent creation of Cave's star programmer Tsuneki Ikeda (of Batsgun, Dodonpachi, Ketsui fame), is definitely not a classic game, but it is about as classic as new games get.

Very large, low-res 2D sprites. Shitloads of bullets. Lots of fun. I have written a review (http://www.gamengai.com/bn_inf.php?type=article&id=1389) which I posted a while ago, and even put up a video (http://www.gamengai.com/video.php) of stage 1 where yours truly got 42.3 million points. :)

I busted my controller today though, so have to fix it before I can play anymore. :(

The only weakness of GG Aleste II is the Game Gear's screen makes the game really blurry. I didn't really enjoy the game until I played it on a GP32 with a GG emulator.

Agreed, the GG screen is awful, but I managed to beat GG Aleste without too much effort, whereas I still can't advance far on the MS games.

And today I got GG Aleste II, and managed to beat it after only one or two hours of playing. I'm a terrible gamer, so they've obviously adjusted the gameplay to suit not only the small and fuzzy screen, but also to fit less competent players.

I'm so happy I snagged Ikaruga for the GC when I did back in '03. I've never seen the game on the shelves or at any other stores in years.

Anyone ever play the arcade version of the original Gradius? I've only played the NES version. I read that arcade version lets you use all four of your Options. Did the NES' limitations really keep the game from allowing you to use all four Options?

I'm bumping this here thread. 'Cuz I feel like it.

I loved Ikaruga. It rocks me in the face every time, but it's nothing short of awesome. I'm more of a vertical scrolling fan, anyway, so I've played a little Giga Wing and the Touhou Games.

I just picked up Chaos Field, and it really doesn't deserve such a bad reputation. It's a little generic, but thhe rave music makes it all so fun. Hell, I'd play this game stoned if I was a druggie. However, being a druggie would be too expensive, so meh.

Border Down I've watched. It's like WTF AWESOME. Same goes for good old Radiant Silvergun. IT LOOKS SO DAMN COOL.

Back to the Touhou games, their PC titles that specialize in filling the screen with usually slow bullets, with plenty of bullet dodging. You can also see your hitbox, which is nice.

I have R-Type Final, but I'd much rather find a copy of R-Type 3. I played it once and... lordy it was awesome.

And while not a pure SHMUP, Astro Boy: The Omega Factor had some pretty good SHMUP sequences. Gunstar Super Heroes, not so much.

Also, SHMUPS are practically crack, and usually more expensive. LOL

Gradius IV - because it's the biggest pile of impossible bullshit I've ever played. LOL

Ikaruga - Pure brilliance.

Super Aleste - probably the best 16-bit shmup I've ever played.

Thunder Force IV - second best. :P

R-Type III - third best (and my favourite R-Type).

I'm probably the only person who wasn't thrilled by Ikaruga. It's a great game, but it feels more like a puzzle game than a shooter to me.

My favorite shooter right now is Mushihimesama. I can't get enough of Arrange and Ultra mode. I also like DoDonPachi Peaceful Death, Gradius/Salamander/Parodius, and Gaia Seed, a fun little shooter for PS that took me forever to find.

Been playing alot of Zero Gunner 2 lately - I have to say that this is Psikyo's best game hands down.

Still enjoying the hell out of Under Defeat too!

I recently find my self liking Rayforce. I put some major time into it this weekend and its quite a solid game. I realy like the second ship. If only this ship was availible in Galactic Attack....
