(I just saw this old GEN ad and it hit a nerve with me)

I swear, I dunno why, but there's nothing like that early nostalgic Genesis stuff to get your gaming heart all fuzzy and wuzzy. I guess part of it was that gap between NES and SNES.

It wasn't quite the 90s yet, but it wasn't the early-mid 80s either.

It was 1989... a time of exciting changes IMO.

sigh.

It never really occured to me that Genesis was released in 89' and I call myself a gamer :bawling:

I remember my uncle used to tease me that he had a Genesis and he would play it when I wasn't around and he would store it up in his attic when I came to his house.

You don't know how many times I tried to go up into his attic looking for it.

Ahhh, I remember looking at ads like this and thinking how amazing the graphics were and how much I wanted those games. The image of the dragon from Golden Axe always was a jaw dropper.

This poster does nothing but remind me of how I wouldn't be getting a new video game system in 1989 even if I begged. Not until 1991 when SNES came along. We eventually got a Genesis in 1993. Well, it was my sister's technically.

The days when I'd make time are long gone, sadly. Before I even knew the game. :D

Anyhow, nifty poster. I know I've got at least one copy of it in a game around here somewhere (or at the very least, a poster very much like it). It's really not much to look at and the descriptions are pretty basic (read the one for Revenge of Shinobi...er, Super Shinobi), but it's still not bad. Nice color scheme and the images are great.

I still have that poster somewhere. Good times indeed. Aside from being disappointed with Super Thunder Blade and Super Hang On, the early Genesis titles blew me away.

I remember when we got the Genesis for christmas.

If I remember correctly, we got Mickey Mouse, Tommy LaSorda baseball, Moonwalker, and of course Altered Beast.

The next day I had to get a haircut which was terrible because my siblings were playing it and I had to leave. I took the pullout with all the games on it and stared at it the whole time I was getting the hair cut.

Some of those game screen shots look familiar from other game posters I recall seeing for the Genesis. Looking down though I saw Super Shinobi and thought Hmmmf, don't remember that. Looked in the rarity guide and apparently they made a Super Shinobi 2 as well! But of course after reviewing it there wasn't a release in North America of either one so that's why I've never heard of them. Makes me want to look up the ROMs to check them out.

Falling back on the poster though it was a nice upgrade. I love my Genesis due to the graphic accelerator that's equipt under the hood. There's a ton of spectacular SNES games but so many of them glitch and lag at some of the most imporant times when sprites are jumping around everywhere. It's what makes me love the Genesis a tad bit more than the Super Nintendo.

What are you talking about? They were both released here as The Revenge Of Shinobi and Shinobi III, respectively.

Why do we have two threads discussing the same ad?

Well that's a good reason to bring it up, because I didn't know. Remember some of us get lost in translation and don't realize what is renamed into what. Although the screenshots looked similar to Revenge I don't always put 1 and 1 together. It is nice though that you clearified that for me.

On the same note as well, why was it renamed like so many sequals? It confuses the hell out of me due to not paying attention to non-USA releases. Was it named Super Shinobi due to (What I read in another thread) SMS lasting years longer in Europe compaired to North America? So making the destinction somewhat like how we have Super titled games for SNES titles?

Hate to be so ignorant on the subject but recall I lack the knowledge of old gaming because I didn't get magazines, reading endless pages of information. I didn't actually get INTO gaming and have it take over as much of my life up til 3 years ago. Before '03 all I knew was the gameplay I got going over friends houses and what I heard from them.

Man, that's a cool poster. Even Last Battle looks desirable. Phantasy Star II (oddly enough) and Forgotten World are probably the least desirable-looking.

What is this game called Zoom?

While I can't say I'm a Genesis fanboy, I mst admit that Sega had advertising *DOWN* for the Genesis' life. I think the main reason it still holds up so well is for several reasons:

a) The original ads matched the game systems' packaging. Black shell with grid effect. Same for the games. You knew what to look for at all times.

b) The Genesis was released at that fine thin line between the 80's "everything is future" and the 90's "everything is different" aspect. Ads still actually told you about the product, complete with non-wood panelled TVs, yet no matter the game the ad always had similarity with the previous one.

Compare that more modern times where the only similarity lay in the layout and font choices rather than actual product representation. THe Dreamcast had eyes and teeth; the Sega CD had random silohuttes and lousy color choices. The Genesis was black with white grids. Same concept, different game, same message everytime.

bb) GENESIS DOES WHAT NINTENDON'T. Nuff said.

c) The idea of "better graphics" was still actually impressive, when something like "8 MEGS!" meant something. Remember how crazy it was to see Strider's gorilla-bot or the lines of parallax in Shinboi?

It was a time when Style overruled "realism". Nowadays since everyoen is trying to go for realism, everything is looking the same.

d) Sleek jet black curvey deck next to a white box (NES) screamed cool.

Damn, I miss those days. Can you imagine the XBox 360 or WIi using the same concept? Pure white pages, hints of green (or in WIi's case, grey) grids with nothing but a shot of Halo 3 or Mario Galaxy that read "Play in their World. LIVE In ours." or something similar.

GOD I need to get into advertising. The glory days need to return.

No problem. Hope it didn't seem like I was talking down to you, as that wasn't my intention.

That's a damned good question, but one I unfortunately don't have the answer to. Sega of America was known for retitling games for no good reason (from ThunderForce IV to Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar??? Where's the logic in THAT one, SoA?!) so that may have had something to do with it.

hate to bump up semi old topic but I have a question. What is that small black device pictured between the Genesis and the Game Boxes? No, not the powerbase, to the right of that. Almost looks like it says modkit or modbit?? the printing is hard to read on the pic.

I think it says modem. I not sure if that exact one actually ever came out though.

Yup, your right. It is a modem. After you posted that I did an Image search on Google and found it. Its the old Japan style modem for the Genesis. Thanks!!
