View Full Version : Cat peed on the neo geo-what to do?

Yeah, the cat peed on my neo geo, and got liquid on the board. I opened it up and patted it with a paper towel and got it with some compressed air, and that got it kind of working, but is there anything else I should do?

Haha wtf man? @_@ Is it a small kitten or something?
I guess if you dry it up really good it will still work.

It sounds like your cat smelled another cat's scent on your Neo Geo. Presuming that the thing still functions properly, I'd think about washing the outer case thoroughly to get the other cat's scent off it.

Are you concerned about it working or it stinking?
Is it not working now? Or does it smell bad and you want to clean it?

I heard this works on items dropped in sea water, im not sure about cats piss though, so im not responsible if your Neo Geo gets fucked up even worse.
Apparently washing something electronic in clean water, then drying thoroughly i.e. with a hairdryer would remove all the liquid etc, with sea water it removes all the stuff in the water that makes it even worse than normal water.. but like I say.. cats piss.. dodgy
Oh you need to do this ASAP after the incident happens though.. x_x

ahhh yes the neo geo vs feline paradigm, old as time itself. the only solution is a battle to the death, they simply cannot coexist.
Oh man, that sucks. Never leave your Neo Geo on the floor! Hopefully it will dry out and play ok. I've been playing Neo and my dog has walked into my room and walked near it. I yelled at the dog making sure she knows that I love her, but not as much as my Neo Geo.

My rat once chewed through the cable of my only TurboGrafx controller and since this was the days before things like that could easily be replaced on eBay, I had to go for months with no TG (every once in a while I would turn it on and watch the attract screens roll).

Sadly itwas on the desk, next to the tv. The cats have walked by it hundreds of times in the two years it's sat there,I have no idea what prompted them to pee on it this time.
Well, the radio shack guy suggested I just leave it out in the sun to dry, so that's what I'm doing. I've got a picture as is, although the sound through the headphone jack has a terrible buzzing(though in the past, that's been because of the cords hooked into the tv, this time I don't think it is).

When I'm not playing my Neo Geo, I wrap it in bubble wrap and put it into a drawer in my night stand. If I had the original box I would put it in that though.
I hope your NEO is fixable, nothing is worse than a broken Neo Geo. I should know, I have a 4 slot MVS that doesn't play certain sound effects. Its totally driving me crazy. Its also my only MVS. If it worked properly I wouldn't even have an AES anymore. I've tried just about everything I can to fix it, but so far nothing has worked. It looks like I'm going to have to buy a new one.
BTW, leaving it in direct sunlight for a while might fade it a bit. I would be careful doing that, maybe I would put it somewhere in the shade or something.

Dude, this shouldn't be a problem. As long as it is unplugged, you can totally wash it. Dunk it in the sink and scrub it. After you're done, dry it off with a towel, then maybe a hair dryer. The only thing bad that can happen is if you leave the water on it forever and it rusts or corrodes the traces. Everybody cleans arcade PCBs this way all the time.

obviously after a liquid spill you need to let things dry for a few days BEFORE running a current through them (all home electronics are designed to work just fine in a semi-humid environment, and it's rare that getting water on a device with no current running through it will damage it), seems reasonable to me but what do I know
also, in all truth unless there are parts on the board prone to rusting you can actually wash it in water, carefully, but make sure you get water out from under chips and pins (and keep it way away from any transformers/capacitors/etc. If you use a hair dryer, make sure the heat is low or off, too. Don't want to warp anything.
also, cat claw marks on games = i rape and kill said animal
(j/k, but I wouldn't leave anything out of boxes if I had cats)

That's a terrible suggestion if you haven't washed the piss out throughly first. Hot cat piss is NOT a pleasant smell. In fact if you don't get it out now your room is going to smell fragrently of amonia everytime the system heats up.

Why the hell would you listen to someone at radio shack? :hmm:
Like loopy said, dunk it in water and rinse it off, then pat it dry and DO NOT store it flat until it is dry. Let it dry for AT LEAST 5 days to be safe, if you can go longer without your Neo then wait a week. Before you power it back on use some compressed air in the crevices to see if there is any water trapped still.
If you plan to piss on your cat make sure he cant jump up and bite your wang.

Throw the cat out the window. Preferablly not from the 1st floor.
I've had my current batch of cats for two years, and they never even mess with my video games.
The first dog I ever had tore through SNES controllers, boxes, manuals, and countless goosebump books...
I've never had my cats piss on anything valuable (unless you consider cat litter valuable).
My best friend has three dogs, and one of his dogs can't even come inside because he pisses on everything. Everything. He's pissed couches, floors (countless times), etc. Whenever he gets excited, it runs free. One of the other dogs chews through any chords. Anything wirey. The third dog attacks toys that are bigger then it. In my experience, my cats are much better around my stuff then any dog. However, I do like dogs as well, I just don't allow them near anything I'd actually care about getting destroyed.
...and, what did he mean about Anthony1?

Wouldn't that zap it? I don't want to damage any internal bits that some sort of charge in it, like where the plug goes in or something.
What would I be scrubbing the board with, anyways?
The Neo Geo is working fine again after spending about an hour drying out in the sun. I've got it unplugged at the moment, until I figure out if I want to scrub it or not.

Wash your Neo, I wased one of my Neos in the dish washer (NO SOAP!) And it didn't harm a thing, just dry the thing off completly before you use it again.
I used compressed air and Arizonas dry heat to dry it off 2 hours later it was good to go.

Our dog is great !!! When I have my XboX on the ground and the wires are on the floor (plug, controllers) he's so scared when he approches it that he doesn't know what to do. He sits there and wines untill someone lifts him over the cords!
Sucks to hear about your NEO. I'm sure a bit of liquid is no big deal for the system. Once dry it should work. The main concern would be the smell. That stuff is hard to get out of things.

strange indeed, ive had a cat longer than i was collecting, and in my years of collecting and gaming, never once has anything happened, he doesnt so much as step on things, rarely even sniffs anything unless its new.
regardless though, you should washed it down and dried it like hell before turning it on, since it seems you arleady had it on, the damage might be permanent. i say wash it wish water, then blow dry, then let sit for a while.

My cat peed on my Sega CD, 3DO and NES. No accounting for taste I guess. The funny thing is that I keep my systems in a glass front entertainment center. The damn cat actually pissed through the seem of the glass and the wood and hit 3 levels of game systems. Also peed on many controllers when I left them out. Nothing was ever damaged, but things smelled funny for a while. Forget any of those enzyme deoderizers and no amount of conventional cleaning got rid of the smell. But Fabreeze did the trick right away.
Stupid cat.

I've been around cats and all kinds of other animals my entire life and I've never had this happen, they've destroyed other things but never my games. I'm not an expert in any way, but I would be more concerned with the left over stuff in urine if you didn't clean it really really well eventually having a corrosive effect on the boards or the components. I'd think that just letting it dry might intensify the problem. Also if you don't get rid of the urine smell (and I'm mean clean it tell you can't smell anything and then clean some more), or the cats, and try your best to figure out what promted them to do this in the first place(new cat? How's the area around where you've been keeping the Neo smell, could be they've been using the general area as a cat box for awhile and the Neo just got lucky this time, are they fixed?), it's likely they're going to pee in it again.

Yeah, all twelve of them.
Anyway, I would return the Neo to Wal Mart.
Oh, wait...
Or you could buy a new one and sell the other on eBay for the same amount.
Or, since the pee came out of the cat, get even by putting the neo in the cat...seems like good revenge to me.
I've often heard the best way to train animals not to piss in the house is to piss right on them as soon as they piss on something of yours. They learn quite quickly that way.

Eh, that's going overboard. The jets in a dishwarsher are pretty strong, even at no or low heat you're probably gonna knock it around - and if the circuit board's exposed you'd have to worry about water getting into the paper of any transformers, soldered on bits getting knocked off, and so on...

I'd think that just letting it dry might intensify the problem.
If there's any reaction between components on the board and any acids in the urine, it'll balance out soon after the urine hits the board. I don't think urine would be a good thing to have on plastic, but I have a feeling it won't be peeling layers away like paint thinner would, either ;)

But back to reality, You should do as it's been said, Wash it but don't wash it while it's plugged in and don't plug it in while it's still wet.
And when it's not plugged in, switch the on/off switch to the "On" Position to get any electricity left in there out, then switch it back to "off"

Well, the pee doesn't seem to have damaged the internals, since it was playing fine when I gave it a test last night. Still smells some if you get close to the controller port-side of the board, however. When I find the hairdryer I'll wash that bit and let it sit for a couple days, and see if that does the trick.

I did that before anyone posted anything USEFUL in this thread, and after I had cleaned out all the piss I could find on the board. For like the first 5 hours it was nothing but people saying to snap the cat's neck.
It was already plugged in when it got peed on, something tells me electrical damage would have already BEEN there.
At any rate it's cleaned up as I can get it now, having scrubbed down the board and the interior casing(where most of the still existing smell was coming from) and presumeably it still works.

You're wrong in assuming that the liquid alone would damage it. It's liquid plus current that will damage electronics; as I already explained the liquid itself isn't going to damage it. Anyhow, cleaning off the board (I must've missed the part where you said you did that) is the right thing to do, but then plugging it in was not, because you can't be sure liquid hasn't gotten between pins on the mainboard.

Oh yeah, I cleaned it off the second I noticed that it had been covered in cat wee. I had already powered it up by that point, though-that's how I noticed it wasn't working right, when none of my neo geo games were booting up properly.
As I said, I took the paper towel and the compressed air to it lickity split and got as much of it as I could find on the board, and when I powered it up a little while later, it booted the games fine-at this point it's just me seeing if I can't lessen the odor at all :P
