SEGA of America and Sega Europe today announced the long-anticipated return of Golden Axe, a fan favourite since its original release in 1989. Developed exclusively for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, Golden Axe marks the first project from the recent acquisition of San Francisco-based studio Secret Level.

Golden Axe delivers action-RPG thrills as a small band of Riders embark on an epic adventure to recruit allies, expose the enemy and prevent the annihilation of their breed. Delivering an intense and unique combat experience, players charge into battle on the backs of ferocious beasts or take their chances with the enemy while on foot. Fighting skill, wits and even magic are all called into action as players immerse themselves in the struggle to defeat an evil intent on enslaving the remains of civilization.

"Golden Axe is one of our most treasured brands and is a complete re-imagining of the story that will take gamers on an unforgettable journey," said Scott A Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America. "The vision we have for the remake of Golden Axe is nothing short of remarkable and it can only be realized on the PlayStation 3 system and Xbox 360."

Golden Axe is slated for release in 2007.

Hope you enjoy this news,

Is that supposed to be Tyris Flare?

I hope they put effort into this instead of doing what they did to "Outrun: Coast 2 Coast".

Now that "Afterburner" "Sonic" & "Golden Axe" are coming, what other SEGA games can we look forward to?

I'm actually quite suprised that no gaming sites have got any artwork / screenshots up. Only one site has even announced it (kotaku)

Maybe there's just not a lot of interest in this series anymore?

Man, I hope that it's "epic" in it's scope. We could use a few RPGs with the parties made up of classic characters. Here's hoping that they take their time and do it properly.

I am skeptical, so many companies "bring back" franchises, but very few do it right. Sega has a checkered past with this, being even hit and miss with Sonic. I will cross my fingers.

Honestly, I'd love to see a new Hang-On with these kind of graphics.

I was kind of hoping one of Sega's development studios from Japan would be working on this...

The GoldenAxe game is not being developed by the Sega we all have known and loved in the past. This game is being developed by "SecretLevel". They are a North American company. They do quality work, and are good developers but they just arn't equipped with the talent to make something that is vibrant and fresh as if it came from japan.

The game is not even going to be a beat em' up. They are just looting the liscense as an excuse to make some mediocre RPG.

This new Golden Axe game will be like Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows all over again.

I see collections of games from other companies, why can't sega release a collection of thier old arcade games?

Altered Beast, Golden Axe, etc. would be a worthy compilation.

Why mess around with renewing?

The new (PS2) Altered Beast looked promising as well...did that ever make it out in the States? I heard it really wasn't that special.

Let's hope this one does better!

Dude, even Castlevania is an Action RPG these days.

I doubt that, but we'll see.

Wasn't it set in like modern times or something?

It won't be any good unless Elmer Fudd is telling me to "wise fwom my gwave".

I just feel despair when I read news like this. It's inevitable that it's going to be a letdown. Some of these games just aren't meant to transcend through gaming history with us. It would be like making Streets of Rage for a nextgen console.

Yeah. Also, I looked at GameSpot - cancelled in the States, but released in Japan to "mehhhh" reviews.

No, I think it's actually supposed to be Markie Post from TV's Night Court, circa the mid-1980s.

How she got into an epic roleplaying adventure is beyond me.

I can appreciate the revealing outfit, but something tells me that her "Victoria's Secret-mail" isn't going to be all that effective at stopping edged weapons.

I have been writing game companies **for years** requesting that there be an action-RPG starring someone from "Night Court"!

I just hope that they a least include some of the original characters... Tyris Flare, Gilius Thunderhead, Ax Battler, the little elven thieves... Death Adder... If they leave Death Adder out that'll be depressing. It was his massacring of thousands of innocent Yurians that made this game great, and made it worthy of so many sequels and spin-offs!

No, Death Adder is busy with Beggar Prince. Oh wait...

I seem to recall that Altered Beast PS2 was released in Europe; at least, I did read an English review of it somewhere. Quite uninspiring.

Anyway, I'd have thought that Slash Out (Naomi) was pretty close to Golden Axe, except for perhaps its odd choice of settings.

I watched the trailer for it and it looked impressive. Granted, not a split second of gameplay, but at least they had a good base to work from.

The dev team seems like they're hit and miss, though-a couple of decent titles in their roster and a few stinkers, too.

I always thought the guy in the Hitman games looked like Richard Moll (Bull Shannon from NC).

A little similar, except Hitman is much shorter.

Where is our Harry Anderson video game?!

Altered Beast on PS2 did make it out in Europe, but because it got less than glowing reviews I have yet to part with cash for it.

But Golden Axe! As long as its better than the Amiga port
Im in! I just one ride those weird creatures with beaks and
beat up little kids for blue bottles! Violence was so much
purer in those days! Bring back the AXE!

No, I linked the dev team's portfolio.

I saw the trailer at E3, I don't think it's online anywhere yet.

Just a little note for everyone... I just checked out the Sega site and verified that the picture posted here was indeed Tyris. The filename had "Tyris" in it, so it is her. ^^
