Uh, guys, it's been announced!

Star Fox returns to its roots with a blistering space shooter on Nintendo DS.

Features

-Lylat needs help. Players hop into their Arwing fighter and fight through a unique branching storyline of missions, all rendered in gorgeous 3-D.

-Star Fox DS brings a whole new strategic element to the series with a commander's view of the mission. Using the touch screen, players can draw the routes they and their teammates will take, then battle the enemies they encounter as they take over bases and strategically advance across the map.

-Players can blow their friends out of the sky as they dogfight with up to eight players over a local wireless connection or take on up to four players from around the world on Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Please check back for more information on this game as the release date approaches.

It's got a release date of September 25, 2006!

Update: Gamespot has a demo impression up!

I am interested, now that someone actually brought it up! LOL Thanks for the info. As a longtime fan of the series, it's good to see it on the small screen. Only thing is, Why couldn't the tried and true play controls of SNES StarFox be used? That's the Only disappointing thing, otherwise great news!

Oops, I haven't logged on for awhile, so I didn't even see the E3 thread. If a mod could kindly move my thread there, it would be much appreciated. If there isn't already a thread about the game that is.

I'm worried that they're removing the on-rails levels and going with a totally free-motion setup. The on-rails levels were my favorites.

I will be on this game like R. Kelley on underage girls.

Did they announce any sort of DS MMORPG yet? They need to get on that shit.....and no, Animal Crossing does NOT count.

Starfox has jumped the shark. :(

Starfox for SNES -- incredible
Starfox 2 for SNES -- unreleased
Starfox 64 for N64 -- neat, but not as good as the first

Starfox Adventures for Cube -- WTF?
Starfox Assault -- WTF? WHY? Is this so hard to get right?

Starfox DS -- looks plain from what I've seen, and the stylus control could bury it. Cautiously optimistic, but I feel like I've been burned before.

I, too, would prefer the old digital controls of the SNES version. I'd love a GBA version of the SNES game.

I don't think it's possible for a video game franchise to jump the shark. All it takes is one game for a wayward franchise to regain its glory.

All I've been waiting for since Starfox 64, which was BETTER than the original Starfox, in my opinion, is a Starfox game without that platforming crap. If this is that game, it could be awesome.

Starfox 64 >>>>>>>> SNES Starfox

I'm looking forward to DS, though. Lack of on foot adventuring can only be a good thing.

I'm iffy on the stylus-only control scheme, but it could still be great. No foot missions = happy.

Starfox 64 >>>>>>>> SNES Starfox

Maybe.. but there is one way SNES Starfox kills the N64 version: in it's MUSIC! I hope they bring back the more majestic SNES tunes.. they just worked magic with Starfox in setting the mood. Hello John Williams :P

As far as why I'm not talking about the Starfox DS.. is because I dont have it yet. I learned a long time ago not to really give a shit about a game until I got it in my hands (or it's real near the launch date) :P

I'm with Flojomojo, the series has died. Been downhill since the original SuperNes game which was amazing.

A shame we never saw its true sequel on the SNES.

YES!

This is so true. The fact that the voices were computer bubbles didn't hurt, either.

The snes version still holds a special place in my heart. It is a special game the levels the graphics it totally pulled me in at the time. Although I liked the n64 version and fell out of favor with the gamecube's 1st one I hope they include the snes version on the ds.

It's gotta be better than Assault was (Oh Namco! Why hast thou forsaken us?)I thought for sure that Namco would be able to do a great job with Starfox. I still don't understand why it went so wrong.

Starfox ASSault makes Sega's F-Zero for Cube look playable and fun in comparison.

I still don't understand why:
Mario 64 > Sunshine
F-Zero X > F-Zero GX
Wave Race 64 > Wave Race Blue Storm
Zelda Ocarina of Time > Wind Waker

I seriously don't get it. The Cube has a better controller, better graphics, lots of storage space, more 3rd party support, the benefit of being 5 years newer and enjoying the improvements in game design, and yet, the N64 is "better" in many ways.

Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man. At least Rogue Leader is better than Rogue Squadron.

I'd put F-Zero GX over F-Zero X in every category except for music, and that's just because I like speed metal more than I like techno.

Of course, you're forgetting these installments:

Mario Power Tennis >>> Mario Tennis
Super Smash Bros Melee >>> Super Smash Bros

Although I'd count the Kart ones as depending on the circumstances. 64 is much better if you only have 4 people, but if you're doing a LAN in co-op mode, Double Dash is fantastic.

The N64 Mario Tennis is so much better then power tennis, or "tennis cube" as I like to call it. Mario Tennis is by far the most popular game in my apartment. Tennis Cube focuses too much on the dumb power shots and requires less strategy.

I'll disagree, I played both games, and I found Power to be the better game. The power shots weren't broken, which was my greatest worry pre-release, and the gimmick courts are awesome.

My friends and I liked the Cube one much more than the already good N64 one, so :P

i thought fzero for cube was awesome. hard as hell towards the end but awesome nevertheless. which is a helluva lot more than i can say about the n64 game.

Eh, I'd have to agree that F-Zero X is the pinnacle of the series. GX is great mind you, but the tracks in X were much better, as was the music. It's one of my favorite racing games of all time.
Man, I wish they would remake F-Zero X on the DS, with online play and global track records, that would kick some serious ass!

As for the new StarFox, I'm anxious to play it. As long as they get away from the on-foot nonsense and stick to the core gameplay, I have no doubt it will be a good game.

Cant wait for Starfox DS. Hopefully it will be as amazing as Starfox 64 was.

I'm hoping that StarFox DS will be better then StarFox Adventures (It was boring compared to StarFox 64)

Also, I noticed that there are very few good sequils to N64 games on GCN (Here are those few):

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Zelda: Wind Waker (If you want crappy Zelda, go buy "Zelda: Majora's Mask")

Mario Party 6 (It's not too bad, really!)

Mario Kart: DoubleDash! (Then again, I've played the living crap out of MK64, so new tracks are nice!)

Otherwise, the N64 is still better
(Goes back to playing Diddy Kong Racing)

I was going to do the whole "Who's playing StarFox Command?" thing, but I did the search and turned up this thread.

Picked it up yesterday and I must say that it is pretty interesting. The stylus works better than I thought, but it would have been more fun with a standard control setting. I completely understand why Nintendo didn't give the option though, as most wouldn't use the stylus. It takes practice, but it is doable and fun. Plus, it is a tad easier to aim your blasters off the bat.

There is a good amount of story going on, which is a bit irritating, but it all can thankfully be skipped on repeat plays. The pro of this is that the game plays almost like a choose your own adventure book. One thing that's pretty cool (or not, depending on your preference) is that they dropped the voice acting for the gibberish of the SNES game(s).

Actually, that leads into what I have really been feeling since I started playing. The "command" part of the equation is really the core gameplay of StarFox 2. It is nicely implemented with the stylus and works quite well, though it does create a game that feels a bit too bite size. This might change as one plays through, and it isn't really a complete negative, but it is tough to get a rhythm going. Also, the game is all off-rails. This is disappointing, but I read reviews before diving in.

I am a StarFox fan, save the Zelda clone (though it is solid, it is not StarFox). I am even a fan of Assault on the GC (I think the game is underrated. The on-foot sections are not the SW Rebel Strike tragedy they were made out to be by an unnecessarily overcritical gaming press). With this, I wholeheartedly recommend Command if you like the air combat of the series. 64 is still the ultimate StarFox game, but Command is quite fun and feels like the old games, even with the stylus controls.

On a side note, can anyone help me with getting a translated, patched repro of StarFox 2!?! I would love to play it on the native hardware and have has issues emulating it. I know there are instructions on how to do it yourself, but I would rather just buy a nice professional looking repro from someone.

Control by stylus?

At least make the standard control unlockable. When its all said an done. Just give the snes version\64 for the ds and we can call it a day.

I would be very happy with that.

Yes. Control by stylus. (all the buttons including the D-Pad are used to shoot)

I too was very very sceptical ("wtf") but you know what.. it works out well once you give it a couple go's. Dropping bombs is kind of cool too LOL

I love the stylus controls. I was very skeptical at first but they're so smooth, the game itself runs MUCH more smoothly than I could have hoped for.

I like the shorter size of the action phases as well. As someone who does play the DS on the train/etc. it's ideal for quick bursts of gameplay. Great pacing for a portable title (as opposed to something like Tactics Ogre for GBA, which is one of my favorite games, but I've never played it on anything other than the Gameboy Player at home, terribal "portable" game).

I got to play the single cart multiplayer this weekend.

The stylus control is easy enough to use, but limiting the control setup to this one style will dissuade potential buyers. Also the scoring method in multiplayer ruins the purpose of dogfighting. (Fallen foes leave behind stars that must be collected to get a point, anyone can collect these stars making watching out for and swooping in on stars a better method for victory than actually fighting out right)

Simple quirks ruin a game with some nice potential.

At least I can remove one game from list of must buys as I will be skipping this one...

I love this game!

The controls, while awkward at first, grew on me very quickly.

The game is INCREDIBLY short tho. To "beat" it you go through only 4 tactical maps. However each time you play through you can unlock different story paths, which of course lead to different fights.

Haven't been able to play MP yet, I can't get connected to Nintendo's network through my wireless router for some reason :(

Nobody's mentioned that you can input your own voice into the game :) You know the little nonsense chatter that goes on? The game can take a sample of your voice and create the chatter with it.

I've been enjoying it very much as well. I'm just glad that my hand doesn't cramp up like it does during MP:H. :D

Again, I actually like the online mode. I don't think it's a classic on par with say... Tetris DS or anything, but still fun.

Star Fox Command fucking rocks.

I dig the whole Star Fox 2 inspired gameplay, and the stylus control took me little time to get the hang of. I can't imagine playing the game without it anymore, having to do all sorts of bizarre button presses to do anything.

I have yet to play online, as I've been spending my time working on getting all the single player endings. The story mode is some very cool stuff.
