View Full Version : Goodbye GameBoy, Wii hardly new ye.

(Alright, I did steal that headline from something similar on fark.com)
So, remember when the DS was announced, it was also announced that it is a different product line then the GB series, and that GB will still go on? Well, thats not the case anymore. Because of the 'Wild Popularity' of the DS, N figures releasing another GB wouldn't be the best idea. But, I think thats a good thing, I remember when they announced that the GB would continue, most people bitched about them saturating the handheld market and all that, and now they arent going to do that.
From 1989 with the original GB, to 2005 with the Micro, the GameBoy name had a long run. Wii'll miss you.

The DS has its share of Gameboy-like games that aren't all about the DS features, so I don't think a separate line of handhelds is necessary. This is probably a good move.
Gameboy will never die though. Just like SNES or NES will never die. Not while retrogamers like us are around.

i dont think the gameboy name is that dead, i doubt we'll see a successor to the DS called DS 2 or whatever, when the truly new portable nintendo console comes along, its very likely itll get its gameboy name back...
also, what do you guys think about a third revision of the ds (super lite? lol) thatll be even smaller and without a gba port, if gba is truly dead, it seems likely, not for a while though

I agree with that. Also with the statement that Game Boy will never truly die as long as folks like us are around.

Well, nintendo hasn't totally reduced the gameboy name to nothing, Not just yet at least, I still have hopes that they'll bring the name back, (GBA was my first game system..) But, chances are there. You can look at the last comment as good or bad.

Personally I'm VERY FUCKING WORRIED about this.
What if they don't make a new gameboy. Then it's DS forver? That's fine, except that the DS can do decent 3D. Why is that bad? Read the next bit.
What if they make a new gameboy? What if it can do decent 3D? WHERE will the 2D games be? I'm very paranoid about this. If there isn't one system that does solid 2D games and not much else, there's gonna be nothing but downloadable 2D and that's not so awesome.

This is DEFINATELY a good move! (Unless the rumors were true about maybe being able to play GC type games on it, which I'm sure that's kinda what the next version of the GB or DS will be)
They need to focus all their resources to the Wii and DS.

yeah I think that you will see a bunch of gba games released well into 2007... especially 3rd party...

I don't mind this that much. Like others have said the DS can play GBA so we'll still see a lot of those around. And even when people stop making GBA games they'll probably just start making GBA type DS games.
I don't fear the total 3D switch on DS because when you think about it, 3D hasn't been that big on the system. A lot of the really big, and really good DS games are pretty much 2D with some sort of touch feature. In fact I'd venture to say that we're already seeing evolved GBA type gaming on the DS with titles like Castlevania DOS, New Super Mario Bros., Princess Peach, etc.

That's a really assinine thing to say, Poofta!
But, Cryomancer, the thing is, even if Nintendo does call their next handheld system Game Boy somthing-or-another, it'll still be a system capable of pulling off good 3D. We just have to trust that some developers will know we still want good 2D games to go along with the 3D ones.
But I wouldn't worry too much. We still get good 2D stuff even now on DS. Look at Kirby, Castlevania, Princess Peach, and etc. There are a lot of good 2D DS games, and a lot of promising titles were announced at E3.

Well, the successor to the DS will probably be the TS (triple screen). All three will be the size of PSP screens, heh heh.

i agree. the gba IS a great 2d system. but the DS handles all that and then some. i just wish it did 3d a bit better or had some sort of analog input.

Nintendo purposly made the DS under-powered for 3d games, and a side effect of that is there will be plenty of 2d games coming out for it. 2D is generally better for portable gaming, you dont really need huge 3d levels to explore when your only playing on a short bus ride.
Nintendo obviously loves 2D and wont give up on it for a long time to come. Just check out the new paper mario platformer on cube, and new mario bros on ds, they wouldnt be making those games if they didnt think people would buy them.

I feel the same way. The DS has some nice 2D games, but the GBA was primarily 2D with the odd 3D game here and there. Hopefully companies will still make innovative 2D games even after the DS eventually is succeeded.

Good idea for N to back off the Game Boy name for now. The DS is big time Game Boy bloodline though. Look at the two screen Game & Watch units for crying out loud. :P

yeah i know the touch screen is there... but i hate using it to control 3d gameplay, i beat SMDS64 almost exclusively using the dpad.

I don't see what the big deal is. So it's called by a different name, so what? The DS is still essentially an updated Game Boy, isn't it? That's like getting worked up over consoles from the N64 on because "NES" wasn't somewhere in there like NES and SNES.
Although I was one of those upset over the name change from Revolution to Wii, but I got over it. It's just a stinking name. As long as the product is good, who cares?
A rose by any other name is still a rose.

I just bought an original GBA from a friend wich included Final Fantasy Tactics for very cheap.
cant wait to pick up Metroid:Zero Mission / Fusion and Advance Wars
doesnt matter if Nintendo is all about the DS now I mean how many Gameboy Advance games are there anyway? like a BILLION lol.
Also I was wondering does the original GBA play all old GBcolor games or what? just kinda need to know before I pick some older gameboy games up.

Yuppers, plays all the GB and GBC games. You need a GBC if you want to connect systems for multiplayer or to use functions like in the Zelda games Oracle of Seasons/Ages. The GBA doesn't support linking in the older formats. There may be mods but I haven't heard of one yet.

Actually, you just need a universal cable (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004YZA1/ref=pd_sim_vg_2/002-2232516-5302430?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=468642). You seem to forget the endless stream of craptacular 2D games that flooded the GBC library. A system capable of doing solid 2D games means nothing if there aren't developers who are willing to take advantage of it. And developers who are willing to take advantage of it won't care if said system can do decent 3D.

I just want to say 2D > 3D on handhelds. There's so much more that can be advanced in 2D gaming that hasn't been done and I feel should be done with the newer technology. It's a shame they toss so many 3D games out that could totally rock with high resolution pre-rendered 2D sprites and landscapes. :D
*Maybe I'm just a neo-classic gamer*
