View Full Version : Is PayPal really worth it?

Having bid on my first auction in a while today, I started browsing good ol' Paypalsucks.com (http://www.paypalsucks.com) again, and started wondering if I should really bother keeping my account open. There just seems to be so much risk involved.
I'm already pretty bitter with Paypal. I had to receive a single credit card payment once and unwisely "upgraded" my account to a "Premier" account. Now there's no way to change it back, and they're charging me on every transaction.
Does anyone here feel ambivalent about Paypal?

I could not agree with you more, gone are the good old paypal days where it was all free! If you list a ton of auctions, 3% + 30 cents per payment adds up fast and by ebay rule you can't charge people for the service, although I raised my shipping prices on my auctions considering on a normal game that ends at around $15, paypal would take about 75 cents of that and for what?? I realize they are providing a service, but the horror stories about feepal scare the hell out of me! Especially if they have access to your bank accounts! Yikes!
Right now if I list 100 games for sale, about 80 to 90 will pay via paypal, but you have to make sure you cover your ass when you ship or you could get a chargeback whacked on you! Just my thoughts, I haven't had much to complain about with them, but all it will take is one time getting burned and that will end it for me!

Not to mention Paypal now requires credit card on all new accounts and older accounts have about a month to add credit card to keep it open. I don't like the idea of letting PP have my CC in case PP tries to pull the money out of my ass. After all, it's almost too easy for a buyer to screw the seller if the seller didn't use any trakcking information on shipping (ie delivery conformation)
I don't plan to add CC to my PP account so they'd have to close it. And right now I have one lousy penny sitting there... what do you think it'd cost PP to send me a check for a penny? 37 cents in stamp, 10 cents for an envelope, 25 cents for a check to be printed, and some of someone's time to stuff the envelope and send it to the post office.

no matter what ebay say about charging people extra for Paypal, loads of people still do it. In fact, I do - as far as I am concerned it is the same as every other place. Shops mark up their goods to cover credit card fees (that's why you can often negotiate a discount on large purchases if you pay in cash). So why shouldn't I cover my costs as well? After all, I charge if people want to send me foreign cash, because it will cost me to get it changed . . . and if I am feeling generous / want to encourage custom from someone etc. I can waive the fees for them :D
Beyond that I've had no trouble with Paypal at all. And it is by far the easiest way to buy stuff from overseas, so I'm not going to complain.

DO NOT LISTEN TO www.paypalsucks.com!!! They're a bunch of flaming moronic IDIOTS who couldn't navigate a website to save their eternally damned, and tormented souls.
EVERYTHING they point out and bitch about is blatantly wrong, and/or the EXACT equivilent of any bank in america. If you accept credit cards, you may get a chargeback, that's NOT paypal's fault, don't like it? then don't accept credit cards.
There is a helpline phone number that is VERY VERY easy to find, and I've called it more than a dozen times and gotten the GREATEST phone people in the world (and they all speak english!)
Paypal is also now owned by ebay. There is practically no other option, and EVERYONE accept's paypal. If someone is selling an item and doesn't accept paypal, I almost never bid on it.
I can't say enough good things about paypal (And yes, I've been screwed a couple times from people on paypal, 100% NOT their fault)
Paypal is THE safest way to send and receive money, bar none.

What about the account seizures resulting from stolen credit card transactions?

Vroom...I think you're in Europe, right? In the US, the practice of charging extra for credit card transactions is *very* rare. I think the credit card companies specifically tell stores not to do it, if I can remember correctly.

Right. I think what he's saying is that shops mark up their prices on ALL goods, because they don't or aren't supposed to charge extra to individual credit-card using customers. But if you're going to make a big purchase, and you're offering cash, none of which goes to the credit card company, well, the shopkeeper might be willing to cut you a bit of a deal.

bargora is right. And sometimes it doesn't even have to be too big of a purchase. I got a 10% discount when I bought a new bicycle (from an official Raleigh dealership) - on the bike and all the accessories I bought with it - because I paid cash. And I know that quite often electronics retailers will do the same if you are purchasing new hi-fi / gaming / computer equipment etc, especially if you make it clear that you are shopping around.
And I *always* shop around if I want to buy something that's more than, say, $75.
Shops factor a lot of things in when they choose their prices - including a mark up to cover credit card transaction fees, and to cover shoplifting as well. (otherwise their budgeting would go horrendously awry!!). Obviously you can't do anything about the shoplifting, but if you can save them on the transaction fees, and they know that you might take all your money elsewhere otherwise, they are often happy to pass the saving on to you! I always ask, because at the worst, they can only say no :-)

i liked paypal until i recently got 1 grand sent to me, and they took $30 :(
thats not bad, but what if its an ebay auction, and you get paid with paypal, ebay owns paypal now......so why can't they make paypal cheaper, if not free for ebay auctions? and they could cover their ass by making it so that you could only pay the amount of the auction, no more, so that people couldn't do a $1 BIN item so that somebody can send them a grand........sounds crazy, but i know people would do it. hell i probably would if i could save money like that.......the paypal fees get a little outrageous sometimes and couldn't they just send you a simple email stating that somebody sent you money, minus the graphics........if i get 10 payments, there goes my account, the rest of my email just bounces......it probably wasn't important anyways
In ways Paypal really sucks, but it is by far one of the most useful tools on the internet
MO=buyer pays extra
PP=Seller pays extra............how can we make this fair?

There are no "account seizures" from people paying you with stolen credit cards.
If someone pays you with a stolen credit card, the transaction is reversed. Yes, you lose the money, same thing happens with a bounced check. Same thing happens with ANY COMPANY that allows you to accept credit cards.
It's not like I work for paypal, I just hate that site, because they're ALL EXTREMELY STUPID. These are the people that make you just stare slackjawed at their utter ignorance.

The problem with PayPalSucks is that u never hear the 1000's and 1000's of good things people have to say about it. Yea the cost are a pain but u should be able to up the prices on auction if they want to pay paypal. It is like if someone want to speed thing up buy getting a money order they have to pay extra for the money order but there is not wait for the check to be cleared. To me paypal is the same way.
