The menu loads fine but when I select "start game" nothing happens. It just loops back to the menu.
Weird.
Do I need a network adapter to make it work?

Are you pressing circle or X?

Alright, this is really funny :D
When I first got Mgs 2 I almost returned the game because of the same problem you have. I kept pressing X and start and it would 'reset' on me.
But then I had a moment of relavation and remebered that you had to push the O button in the original game.
Feels good that I'm not the only one who has fallen for this ;)

Well it's stupid.
They ought to at least have a "Press O to start" direction.
Glad I did not waste my money.

I had a guy try to return Metal Gear Solid 3 because the game was, as he said, "So stupid because I can't even get past the menu screens and stuff!"
I walked slowly to a PS2, popped in MGS3, and pressed circle.
Japan ---- Circle means go, X means stop.

Indeed. Same issues happen with the Final Fantasy games on the PSX and every import I own.
It can be incredibly infuriating though. :)

Reminds of all the times I hit "replay" in Gitaroo Man and Ouendan, only to wonder why all my hits were off.
Anyway, enjoy Subsistence. Just beat it last night-- amazing game.

Is it worth getting if I already have the original? Please note I have barely started it. :D

No one reads manuals. (Okay the nerds do-- that's about it.) I've been gaming 30 years now & never read the manual 'cause the instructions are 99.99% of the time right on the screen.
Most games have a "Press start to begin"
MGS should have a "Press O to begin"

Forget manuals. If you had at least tried pressing the other buttons instead of coming straight away and posting about this on the forums, you would've figured it out quite quickly...

Most of Kojima's games behave this way. Which is odd, because i thought you needed to have "x" as go and "o" as back in order to be certified by Sony in the US. Some games seem to bypass this requirement somehow.

Laughing at me is fine. I'm laughing at myself right now. I looked at the cover --it said "online only"-- and quit thinking I needed a Network to make MGS3 work. Perfectly natural. But still funny. --- Saying (paraphrased) "go read the manual stupid"?
Anyway I got it to work! Played for about 5 hours & then quit 'cause I was bored. I'm a very emotional person & need a good story with romance, friendship, and all that crap. FF9/10 are my favorite games. MGS3 didn't have it.
Anyone know why they picked the MSX version of MGS2? Was the super nintendo version no good?

They picked the MSX verions of MG2 because it was only released on MSX, only in Japan, until now.

People who don't read manuals are the reason we have crappy tutorials that you can't skip in games like Ocarina of Time. "Hey, lets learn how to Z-Target, even though it's in the manual and you've already played this game before".
Also, what Metal Gear game was on the SNES?

First, people who read manuals are nerds? So because someone takes the time to check and see what the hell they're doing they are inferior?
Second, Bullshit. Plenty of games had me reading the manual trying to figure out how to play them. You mean to say that you played every game without ever checking a manual, I doubt it. Then there's the process of elimination, when you played SMB and the B button didn't jump did you assume it's broken? Or did you move your finger over to the right?
Anyway I got it to work! Played for about 5 hours & then quit 'cause I was bored. I'm a very emotional person & need a good story with romance, friendship, and all that crap. FF9/10 are my favorite games. MGS3 didn't have it.
Sure you pressed O? You may want to play a bit more, but that's just me.
