View Full Version : Sony gets caught red handed with Blu Ray "demo"

Who'd you think you were fooling, Sony? You go throw some big huge party celebrating the 10 year birthday of the Vaio and the launch of the Vaio UX Micro PC and your new flagship Blu-ray playing AR series 17-inch powerhouse laptop, replete with demo of early Blu-ray title House of Flying Daggers. And then you get done caught red-handed by a meddling reporter who discovered the Blu-ray playback is actually coming straight off a typical, normal old DVD+R. It's a sham, Sony, the whole thing's a sham! How are you gonna make a case for your laptop -- let alone Blu-ray as a format -- now that you tried to pawn off a DVD as a Blu-ray tech demo to a room full of industry professionals? We hope at least it was playing back a high def trailer, or something; now go to your room, you're gonna have some serious alone time, little mister.

Fantastic.

On a fairly unrelated note, a recent survey has come in from Japan... Turns out that 78% of Japanese gamers are not going to buy a PS3.

Reading other sources on the subject, it sounds like a side-by-side comparison was being run of DVD versus Blu-Ray, hence the possibility exists a DVD was in the room at some point. Regardless, a single photo from an internet "journalist" looking for a scoop seems questionable at best.

I've been a Sony fan since PS1. I liked that system a lot. I LOVE my PS2. My favorite system of all time.

The PS3 is a complete joke, and Sony is a complete joke. They've fucked themselves hard, over and over. I cannot wait for Nintendo to once again rule the gaming industry.

I'm honestly surprized that I just said that, but its how I feel.
Fuck you, Sony. I'm done with you.

I honestly disagree about the PS3 being a complete joke, but I unfortunatly doubt that Nintendo will ever rule the game industry mainly because they will be the secondary console

I doubt they will ever become the Industry Leader, it's more of the how they are positioning themselves as basically either having a 360 or a ps3 and a Wii

I still think that it will be the PS3 and Wii this generation with the 360 close behind

and on this topic I don't think we really got the complete story, I mean like someone else posted in here

were they doing a side by side comparison with dvd?

if there was just the dvd disc the pictures and articles don't say if there was actually a blu-ray disk as well

either way this was a bad move on sony's part but I still honestly don't think we are getting the whole story

I told you they couldn't get that Blu-Ray drive to work.

Of course, I'm more than a little pissed that I'm being asked to throw away my entire DVD collection just to buy everything all over again, at higher prices, no doubt. And I'm a movie lover who knows how badly compressed films have to be in order to be squeezed onto a disc.

In Sony's defense, the cost of the hardware is expected to plummet from over $800 to $320 in just three years. So, if they can hold out long enough, the price will drop and the console will be more successful. The question is how much ground will be lost before that happens; I can envision a lot of gamers choosing XBox 360 instead, while everyone and their uncle picks up a Nintendo.

Ah, well. Nothin' left to say, but... LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

Well i look forward to the (eventual) use of Blu-Ray and i find it to sound like a much better format than HD-DVD.

Although those Blu-Ray cases look like complete suck.

As for this article and the burned DVD, is there another source for this info?

Or do i just sit and take anything i read on the internet as *FACT*? :P

This happened at a media event and the person who opened the drive was Lance Ulanoff of PC Magazine so if you need more info check there.

That aside Endgadget is a reliable source, they're not just some site on the internet they're a legally-liable business entity.

I think it's awesome that people are starting to realize things that have always been right in their face. When I was still a n00b here I was flamed for talking bad about Sony.

I have owned a PSX, PS2, and a PSP. They are nice due to the games, but damn SONY makes them out of rubberbands, toenails, and lazer tag parts. I mean they really have a HORRIBLE reputation for quality.

Anyways, I can't wait until everyones PS3's break......4 years later they will be SO excited to fork over some more $$$.

Stop the cycle people!

see but that's the thing

anyone that i've known that had a PS2 has not had problems with DRE and many of them have had it since Launch

I still think that the quality issue about the PS2 is exagerated, I mean with every console it has problems that's just enevitable

I also think that basically if sony doesn't lead this generation that's not a bad thing,

if we lose competition in this generation such as sony stop making consoles and leaves basically Microsoft and Nintendo that will be a bad thing

Competition is a good thing and no matter what I don't care if you like Microsoft or Sony without Competition it's a bad thing for gamers in general IMO

fully AGREED

I also luv the PS2 (hell im picking up yet another NEW slimline next week).
but the PS3 is just fucking crazy everything from the Price to the new "experimental" technoligy spells disaster alaDREs out the ass within the first 6-9 months of the PS3s launch.

If MGS4 isnt eventually released for the 360 (wich I think it WILL) then ill just do without the latest Metal Gear I can. deal with that.

Ever see the inside of a PS2? It's a kinda dumb and overcomplicated design. I think they were designed partially to have lots of chance of failure sometimes.

yea sony is a believer in design for failure - something American toy companies popularized. I think most companies think about incorporating that in some ways but i dont think any companies had it back fire as badly for them as sony (unless they truly intended for it to happen like that)

As far as Sony's game consoles quality is concerned, I give my testimony, YMMV.

I have owned many game systems over the years most of which I still own, most of the departed were sold, traded or given away. The only case I have lost a system from it ceasing function is my PSX's and PS2's. Yes, that's plural people. I've have multiple of both die on me. Some would say I don't care for my things, while rational, nothing could be farther from truth. Here is why.

I still have my Genny I bought bundled with Streets of Rage 2, my original Sega CD (model 1) and my SNES I bought sometime between the Genny and the SegaCD. All work perfectly well and will more than likely serve for years to come (knock on wood ;) ) How is it then that I am on my 5th PSX (PSone, the 4 before it were old models) and 3rd PS2 (PStwo, previous 2 were old models)? The only conclusion I can come up with is they are crap... my first PS2 didn't even work out of the box (kinda like the 360 a little while ago)! Hell a beat up old Saturn I bought from a pawn shop is still chuggin' along, all I had to do was resolder some wires in the controller plug. Even it has lasted longer in my possession than my second PS2. I'm not the only person I know that has had simular experience with Sony hardware either so yeah, it's crap but I'll take a turd over having hundreds invested into games I would otherwise not be able to play.

I don't hate Sony... apparently Sony hates me :P

Darren870
05-17-2006, 09:16 AM
okay lets say that it was a side by side comparasion. Even so, by burning HOFD on a DVD+R you are reducing the quality for it to fit. Why not just play the real dvd? They are comparing a blu-ray disc against a lowered quality burned DVD.

All they are doing is upscaling there Blu-Ray dvds to make them look better.

Fighter17
05-17-2006, 09:18 AM
Wow Sony, try to make something new for once.

I'm with a lot of people where, their hardware are not in the best quality. I purchase my PS2 in Summer 2001 and it still works, but not like it used to. It takes a long for the PS2 to load up a game and the loading time of each game sucks! My Sega CD is old and it loads up each game very quickly. ;)

A case for deception on Sony's part still stands it seems. :hmm:

Are any industry people actually commenting on this or is it all journalists?

The whole thing just plain stinks to me. To be on the level, for a fair comparison, they should have used an off-the-shelf version of the DVD. Recordable media leaves room for funny business.

sabre2922

As ive stated many times before SONY just doesnt GET IT.

Meaning that the majority of the General Public is perfectly happy with current DVD technology.

The situation now is COMPLETELY different from when we went from 20 year old GRAINY VHS TAPES to nice CLEAR DVD for movies (and games of course).

MOST ppl will see very little difference between current DVD and Blue-Ray.

>Even those that see a slightly more significant jump with thier HD TVs wont be jumping at having being forced to replace their WHOLE DVD collection for something that isnt a big as jump in the quality of entertanment that was so very obvious when comparing VHS Tapes to DVDs.<

Also no matter what Sony (and Microsoft to a smaller extent) try to push down gamers throats about how BlueRay or HD dvd is neccessary for the storage of next-gen games it is a fact that most current games dont use up all of ONE single layer DVD.

Oh well its all been said before.

I'd imagine that a specific scene or scenes were on the DVD+R and not the entire movie.

Although i'm not sure why they chose to use a Verbatim DVD instead of thier own.

But i do agree that the jump from DVD to HD DVD will not be as big as from VHS to DVD.

The sad thing is when I was young Sony had an ironclad reputation for quality electronic products. When the psx was released I thought the quality would carry over.

It is clearly evident that the console quality side of sony leaves much to be desired. Out of all my cd based consoles that I own the sony's had the most trouble.

That being said. I am scared very scared because behind closed doors I know Sony is heated at all the money they are projected to lose.
I know being a launch buyer means having to pay top dollar for first dibs. But for me this might be the first time I sit out a launch

I really feel that due to the cost of the ps3 sony parts. Sony is going to go with the lowest bid on parts and my ps3 will have lens parts recycled from the hubble telescope.

Also include their history of revisions to overcome flawed design. This might just be the first time that it is actually better to wait.

Then why couldn't they have used a real copy of the movie? If they own it, there should be no problem getting a real copy.

I know why-because they wanted something they could put in the drive and access right away without the annoying trailers and copyright warning screens. :)

I remember showing off my DVD player to my aunt (back in 1999) and instead of popping in "The Matrix" and skipping to the final lobby shootout scene.

I chose that scene because it was more impressive than watching to The Wyld Stallion figure out which color pill to take.

I don't really see why people are giving Sony shit about *THIS* particular thing because its nothing at all. This isnt any different than any other company picking out scenes/games that make thier product look the best.

Give them shit about the PS3 price, give them shit about the reliability of the PS2, but giving them shit about this makes it seem like people are just looking for any little thing they can to bash Sony.

This must stop or there will come a day when Microsoft may be reffered to as..........M$.....GASP (or something similiar).

STOP THE HATE PLEASE ITS TEARING US APART.

Did i say you shouldnt give them shit for things they deserve to get shit about? No. You have every right to be mad about the PS2.

However....

Whine all you want about how your PS2 went to shit after you played it for all of 2 days but that has little to do with them doing a side by side demo of regular DVD compared to thier Blu-Ray.

I don't see anyone on here getting pissed at other companies making HD players/TV's/whatever and doing demos for them.

The picture and article was questionable from the get go and even after it was debunked people still persist. x_x

But if someone wants to explain to me why all this warrants continued overreaction then i'm willing to listen.

Hmm so in your opinion any NEGATIVE reaction is an OVERreaction? ;)

No, blowing something that has little to do with gaming in general out of proportion is *OVER REACTING*

It's not about being negative towards Sony so much is that it should be something more worthwhile to be negative about.

The price point of the PS3...thats something to be not so happy about.

Your hard earned money being poured into a game system that may or may not work a year down the road is a very valid reason to be angry.

Acting like it's the end of the world because Sony burned some scenes from one of thier own movies onto a DVD and used it for a comparasion seems a bit....pointless.

I don't know what is so decieving about it...its not like it was pre-rendered game scenes or an entire "game system" that was actually a super computer hidden under a table.

You're missing the point Push. It's not what the showed, it is HOW they showed it. On a DVD+R they could have recorded their "House of Flying Daggers" demo scenes for the DVD side from an inferior source... such as a VHS tape through a coaxial cable. (not saying it's what they did... my contention is that it is possible and also probable) There is room for deception in the act therefor I'm gonna bash away cause I don't trust the cocksuckers.

Is it confirmed by Sony themself btw? Or is this just something a reported have assumed because he found a dvd+r with the movie?

And you're missing the point too. You and others are using some demo/sales pitch for HD *MOVIE WATCHING* to justify bashing Sony.

You think i'm not skeptical of their pratice? Sure i am. But I also understand that it's far less expensive to burn some key movie scenes onto a DVD than it is to fire up a DVD production plant to make a single demo disc. So i can understand why they would use a burned DVD.

But the other point i've been trying to get at all along, do you honestly think that Sony is the only company out there that does things like this? You want to tell me that *NO OTHER COMPANY* outside of the giant EVIL Sony empire does stuff like this? I find that line of thinking to be inane.

If you and others are so sure that Sony is the only one trying to pull some crap on you for the sake of selling/generating interest in products then continue to on with your little bash fest.

Right because the HD display was for a Sony product and was run by Sony, hence Sony would be the only party that is eliegable for criticizism. Sony is also a company with a history of smoke and mirror tactics (Remember that Real-time Killzone demo from E3 05 or the emotion engine?) has potentially done the same thing again. The criticism is perfectly fair.

A fair point, however it does look unprofessional and that's a important fact. They were supposed to be comparing the quality of the original video content on the disc. Using a DVD does open the oppertunaty for snek tactics, which as highlighted earlier Sony is known for.

Oh i'm sure plenty of other companies have done the same thing, but that's no reason not to criticize Sony, it's just a reason to criticize all the other companies that did it too. The thing is those other companys aren't being discussed here because this is a discussion of a single event involving Sony and no other companies.

The bottomline is that all companies should be held accountable for their actions and in this case the suspicious party in this case is one with a rather negative past.

Now i'm not going to say that some of the bashing going on here isn't a bit extereme because some of it is, and you are right that this shouldn't be a gaming discussion. While Blu-Ray is intergal to the PS3 the debate is over the media itself and therefore this should probably be in off-topic.

Blah blah, read the article and Flack's debunk link and I've gotta say; the whole thing reeks of some self-important 'journalist' looking for his fifteen minutes. Too bad he pissed against the wind this time.

I guess what was putting me off was the fact that this had nothing really to do with gaming and people were bringing on the hate like it was. That's what i found unecessary about it.

Question: Ignoring the use of a DVD+R for either the "Blu-Ray" demo machine or the "DVD" demo machine for a second, who's to say for sure that the reporter in question pulled the offending DVD+R out of the "Blu-Ray" demo unit or vice versa?

Ultimately, though, using a recorded disc in a side-by-side comparison is a bit unethical. Who's to say that the video wasn't yanked from HBO, via a crappy cable box?

They probly had a good TV or Monitor so you can see the diffrence between DVD and a TV-rip.

I think you've been under a rock for the last 5 years Push. Movie watching had MUCH to do with how the current generation panned out. PS2's sold like mad cause at the time it launched it was a good dealto get a game system and a DVD player for $400 (back in 2001 DVD players were still kinda pricey). This was especially true in Japan (DVD players were more expensive than here)... it only stands to reason that Sony is trying real hard to make the same push in this case for the PS3 and Blu-Ray.

As far as the rest you had to say, I'm not going to touch it. All I ask is reread my posts because I'm fairly sure you just skimmed them over at best.

Yes they made a copy of (possibly) part of "House of Flying Daggers" to show off, but since they *OWN* the movie and the rights to it they can burn it onto DVD as they please.

My understanding is they have the rights to produce it in America. I don't think they originally made it, but whatever.

My point was that if WE own one of their movies, we have the right to make a legitimate backup copy of it, but they say we can't. Then they go ahead and do it. It's hypocritical.
