It's official: the heroic earthworm named Jim is squirming his way back into the limelight. Atari has revealed that it will be developing a collection of Earthworm Jim games for both handhelds and next-generation games for the next five years. For those of you too young to remember, Earthworm Jim was a popular side-scrolling action game developed by Shiny Entertainment. At its peak the series had its own Saturday morning cartoon show and a line-up of action figures.

I've never felt happiness and disgust in such a short period of time. I was good up until, "for the next five years." Like they've just announced that this idea is going to yet again be beat into the ground until we can't take anymore.

FULL DISCLOSURE:
I haven't clicked on the link to RTFA yet.
But, really, ATARI ? 5 YEARS?
Does anybody here believe Atari will still be in business 5 years from now?

So this means I will get to see EWJ Kart Racing, EWJ Party & EWJ Classic Mega Mix. Just throw it on the pile.

My first reaction to the thread title was "COOL...oh, wait..." Earthworm Jim was one of the best series of the 16-bit era, combining a great sense of humor with excellent gameplay (and the figures were even pretty damn cool). Hopefully at the very least there will be a good game for the DS or PSP, since you know there's very little chance they'd dare to make a side-scrolling X360 game. I'll remain hopeful but unexpectant.

I thought the general consensus was that EWJ 3D killed the franchise.
Great news. EWJ was one of my favorite games on the Genesis. I do however question Atari's ability to revive the franchise. I hope they don't try to rush it and release crap. I hope they think about it first and do it right.

IGN posted a brief look (http://uk.psp.ign.com/articles/724/724720p1.html) at the PSP version today, although it was actually running on the PlayStation 2. To my surprise, this is actually looking pretty decent, even at this early stage.
Jim's suit looks a little tight, though. I always remember it being too big for him.

ehh...I would be excited if it weren't for the fact that a bulk of the talent left Shiny after MDK and then everyone else left after Sacrifice. They haven't put out anything even remotely good since then :(
I want to be excited about this, but something tells me it's going to be one big dissapointment.

Thats pretty cool, but the next 5 years?
I hope to God it doesn't end up like Mega Man these days.
