View Full Version : Top Neo-Geo Games, 2006 Edition

I think the 'Top 100' topics will be very useful in the future. I'm impressed with how quickly the NES and SNES lists are falling into shape, and it'd be good to do this for all the major consoles and handhelds.

So, rather than start another system that has a massive library (i.e - MD/Genny), how about one with only 160ish games?

Obviously 100 games is too many, so what does everyone think? A top 25 Neo Geo games? Comments on this too please.

So same as the others, 3 votes and it's in, then the voting begins.

And please, don't let AES prices influence any game decision.

So here we go with my favorites/most played:

Metal Slug
Metal Slug X
Metal Slug 3
Blazing Star
Pulstar
Last Resort
Shock Troopers
Twinkle Star Sprites
King of Fighters '98
Samurai Showdown
Samurai Showdown 2

Yeah, this has been done(although that list needs to be updated to cover the last few releases).

Seriously, you tell me sam sho special isn't one of the best fighting games on the neo, and I'm going to give you a very, very odd look. And probably commit you on the spot.

The sequel had much more slowdown in it than the first, and the first seemed more varied, IMO.

22 on the final list. I'm shocked that there isn't more love for Last Resort and Twinkle Star Sprites, but there you go.

So, what 3 games will make the finals then? Are the fighting game fans gonna get the last Samurai and Real Bout games on there? And why only one KoF??? Or will the Metal Slugs sneak in there?

If anyone is interested though:
Blazing Star - 9 votes!!
Metal Slug X - 8 votes
Metal Slug 3 - 8 votes
Samurai Shodown! 2 - 11 votes!!!

then nominate that shit yo :D

also I'm just speaking out against the travesty that is Sengoku 2001's inclusion on this list; bland backdrops are a sin against the Neo (not to mention lousy movesets/animation and broken difficulty)!

Add in a vote for Sengoku 2, Metal Slug 3, Last Blade 2, Samurai Shodown 2, Magical Drop 3, and Last Resort.

:D , Last Resort is on the list! And deservedly so. 2 places left.

Anyway, seeing as we seem to be getting on quite well with AES/MVS games, what about a small Neo CD list too?

The Neo CD is still a quality bit of kit. It's just that some of the games in the Top 25 aren't available on the system: Blazing Star, Metal Slugs X and 3 etc. And there's less than 100 games in total (correct me if I'm wrong, I just did a quick count on the NeoGeoCD Master List (http://www.egameaddiction.com/neogeocd/masterlist.html)). So are there any long time NeoCD owners that fancy listing say, the top 10 or top 15 best CD games please?

We'll see if any of the CD exclusives like Ironclad make it into that list.

Remember everyone, The Future is Now. 8-)

Hello,

I am currently building my want list for neogeo as it will soon be the system that I will be focussing my collecting on. I know that many of the games that are available as carts are also available on CD.

Should I focus on carts or CD? Are ALL of the same games available on both systems or are there any CD exclusive or cart exclusive games?

Thanks,

Charles

There's a lot of great games out there by them and some systems to choose from. Personally I'd go for cartridges due to load times being generally lower plus I only currently own a NGPC so carts are the only way for me to go. I'd like treat myself to an AES around Christmas time. :)

While the NeoCD ports almost always have re-arranged music edited from the arranged soundtrack album releases and som other extras on occassion, as someone who plays fighting games a lot I find the animation cuts to be extremely noticeable. Loading time is also completely out of hand. With Real Bout Fatal Fury you could literally leave and make a sandwich between matches. You absolutely want to get a CDZ with its 2X drive if you're going that route. Several games simply did not get CD releases.

Personally I would get an AES with an adaptor to play MVS cartridges on it as well. Your wallet will thank you and it will give you the overall largest selection of Neo games to choose from.

The exlusive games within the Neo Geo systems that come to mind:

MVS:
Breakers Revenge
Neo Bomberman
Prehistoric Isle
Shock Troopers

AES:
Diggerman
Pleasure Goal 5-on-5 Street Soccer
Quiz Daisousa Sen 2: Quiz Meintantei Neo Geo

CD:
Chotetsu Brikin'ger
Crossed Swords 2
Samurai Shodown RPG

I believe King of Fighters '99 is the last official cd game.

Prehistoric Isle (in 1930) is a pre-Neo Geo SNK game. Its sequel, Prehistoric Isle 2, is the one that only came out on the MVS.

Not to be late to the party or anything, but:

-Flying Power Disc/Windjammers
-Sengoku 2
-Sonic Wings 2 & 3
-Metal Slug 1 & 2 (though all are fun)
-Nam 1975!
-Chotetsu Brikinger
-Twinkle Star Sprites
-Blazing Star
-Last Blade 1&2
-Crossed Swords 2

Kept it to my Neo CD titles (except Blazing Star, only played on MVS).

I don't get the love for either Magician Lord or Last Resort, both are absolutely terrible, IMO. Last Resort is one of the worst shooters i've played...
