The Punch-Out series and Evander Holyfield's Real-Deal Boxing for Sega Genesis would have to be my favorite 8-16 bit boxing games.

Greatest Heavyweights for Sega Genesis is an enhanced version of the Evander Holyfield game which someone just mentioned. Personally, I like Holyfield better since I was a fan of him but most gamers seem to prefer "Greatest Heavyweights."

Seconded. No other boxing game has sucked me in nearly as much.
I honestly think that 4D can hold its own against todays games. I spent sooo much time with this game. It is a shame that most people don't know anything about it.

I second the Punch-Out series, but I also have always loved Boxing Legends of the Ring. I always thought it's use of middleweights was a quirky idea and you got to so see some greats the others didn't have. (Hagler, Leonard, Graziano)

Activision's Boxing on the 2600 is a lot of fun with two players. It's actually not even bad against the computer (better AI than most 2600 sports games anyway). I've seen people knocking the game, but personally I think it's great. A real example of what creative programming could achieve on the 2600. A bit abstracted, of course, but then all boxing video games are.
Another pretty good one that no one's mentioned is Toughman Contest. Quite a rip-off of Super Punchout!!, but for us kids that didn't have SNES's it was good to have. I like the Genesis version better than the 32X version actually.
...word is bondage...
hmmm... can't say anything that hasn't been said yet. I would say my favs are in this order though:
Super Punch out
Punch OUt
Evander Holyfied (GEN)

Edit: Oops, I didn't notice the 8/16 bit technicality. IGNORE.
I'm a bit surprised no one mentioned Victorious Boxers. Excellent game, pretty deep fighting system.

Which camera setting did you guys use?
Wade Hixton's Counter Punch (http://www.wadehixton.com/) is a mighty fine game I'm told. The protagonist, a poor fella from a white trash background, fights his way out of the trailer park and into the big time--KO'ing a pimp, a girl, and a trained gorilla (among others) along the way. Watch as Wade's classy mullet flies left to right, dodging punches and landing blows. If the premise sounds like a stock script, with the trailer trash mullet and all, fret not: Wade's ascent to glory is a post-modern celebration of a shattered society, peppered with lessons on life and cold, gritty wisdom. Consider checking it out.

I am looking for a boxing game to play on mame or 8/16 bit systems. What are people's favorite boxing games on these systems?
Well, the Intellivision was a 16 bit system. 8-)
Although I don't think Joe particularily likes it judging by his 'Santuli Slant' of the game:
It says on the package that this is a boxing game, and it says it on the instructions, overlays, cartridge label... and yes, it even says it on the screen for a moment. But when I plug this game in, I see two colored amoebas flailing about. Every so often, one of the amoebas flattens out, and sometimes the other amoeba stretches real high when this happens. Is Boxing so much different on the west coast? [Gr: 1, So: 3, Ga: 3, Ov: 2]
But honestly, I love boxing for the Intellivision. I don't know what it is. It might be the crap-tastic graphics or horrendous controlls, but it always puts a smile on my face when I knock my opponent (usually my brother) out.

Aside from Punchout, there's Barry McGuigan's Boxing for the C64, a very deep, strategic like boxing game. Well worth playing!

my vote goes to "rocky" sega master system
funny i don't consider punchout to be a boxing game - i just think of it as a game
i pretty much leave boxing and sports games alone - but punch out i play all the time - its more a game to me than a sports simulation
Punch out? too much fun to be a sports game! LOL

punch out / super punch out.
Question for those mentioning evander holyfield boxing. Haven't played this since I was 15 or something, and I only played it once or twice then at a friend's house, but my recollection was that it was a complete button masher, which is not my style. Is that a fair criticism of this game or were we just button mashing because we didn't know any better? ;)

Final Blow, and Punchout
I think Final Blow is a good one but takes a little more skill. I would say both Punchouts are good though.
But currently my favorite is Fight Night Round 3.

Good to see Barry McGuigan boxing get a mention. I was surprised to see that no-one mentioned Muhammad Ali Boxing on the Mega Drive though - it's looking a bit rough these days but is very playable, although in two-players, it seemed to favour one side when it came to punching simultaneously.

The difference is this:
Punch Out was released on NES after Tyson's legal troubles in the 1990's, basically a new version of Mike Tyson's Punch Out. They didn't want to be associated with him, so they changed the fighter at the end of the game.
You fight Mike Tyson, obviously, at the end of the original game (with his name on it). If you own Punch Out, the final opponent is a character named Mr. Dream. He fights exactly like Tyson and has the same body type (aside from being a white boxer), it is just a different character. He does all the same moves (one punch knockouts), talks pretty much the same between rounds and can be beaten the same way.
I suppose it was an easy way for Nintendo to make money off the same game twice, in a period before they started exploiting their old titles, since all the programming/design was already done.

Hands down best "BOXING" game are the ones from the Victorious Boxers series.
Namely Victorious Boxers 2.
