View Full Version : when was the last time you threw the controller down

or beat up the game, or punch a door or wall?
Personally, I never understood beating up the game or controller. That to me makes no sense, unless the game absolutely sucks and is worth zilch on eBay/online. I especially don't get people who chuck their controllers down... doesn't seem too wise to me.
However, the other day after one too many Medusa Head mishaps in SNES Dracula X I uncharacteristically snapped and punched the door next to me.. I was just pissed how whenever I ducked, it seemed they dove down, and when I jumped and was sure I would jump over, they would suddenly make a beeline upward. And I got pissed at the lame invincible-after-attack time period... and arrrrrgh.
I admit I lost it there for a second when I hit the door and yelled a loud F-bomb, LOL
I usually am very calm when I play. Usually..

Just today I threw it down playing Adventure Island. Fuck that game and its stupid shit. Why do I like it.:(
The only time I ever broke a controller was playing TMNT 3. I was getting raped on the second stage, while my buddy was doing just fine, and it was pissing me off so I threw the controller down on the concrete floor and stomped it with my heel. From then on the d-pad acted in reverse. But that's pretty, pretty, pretty durable, for getting smashed so badly.
Today they make controllers way to big to throw. The last time I thew a controller was when SNES was still being produced.

I lost one controller to Jinpachi f**king Mishima a while back, and lost another one recently to Soul Calibur 3 too. Now I've simply taken to headbutting controllers instead of throwing them, and I can turn the right analogue stick all the way round on my main PS2 controller. :)
Nearly chucked it today playing Kameo and trying to fight Coralis. The watery little shite.

I didn't so much throw the controller down...
...rather, I slammed it to the ground in-hand.
Yep. Fuck you, Tekken 5.

I whipped my NES controller at my brother just a few days ago, and crushed it really hard with my hands trying (unsuccessfully, obviously) to break it in half.
I do it all the time with the old controllers, especially NES controllers because they're generally pretty durable (and easilly replaceable).
I've got a full drawer of tangled up NES controllers. Letting my steam out on one of them isn't going to do anything in my eyes. ;)

A few days ago, Alien Resurrection. That game is way too hard.
But I didn't break the controller or anything, of course. Don't take rage out on stuff like that.

I haven't thrown a controller since Castlevania III was a new game. I was facing Dracula and had been at it for a while and I had him one bar away from winning and he got me. I throw the controller. It wasn't even my controller, I was at a friends' house. Since then, I haven't done it again. If I get frustrated by a game, I usually turn it off and walk away now

That's funny, I never thought of that.
I don't have a temper at all, I play games for fun, and at times they are frustrating yes, but I just say f this and turn it off. I do that with 'counterstrike: source' all the time since I either get fragged by cheaters or people who are pros.

Throwing my controler has ended the lives of atleast 2 games. One being Secret of Evermore. I loved that game, but that one glitch that fucks up your game really got me angry.
Baisacly a good way through the game, if you warp out of this one temple you can't get back in, which pretty much means you have to start ghe game over. I showed that game who was boss tho, then I regreted it and got even more angry.
Another game was this one PS1 game (which name I can't remember) that pretty much had it coming to begin with. I chucked my controller, it hit my PS1 and the game ended up breaking inside.

I did the sytem and Controller at the same time. Can anyone guess how?
Fire Emblem Advanced. You get to the end, and you try to level up a guy and you have one more move to win, and somone attacks a guy on your team and he has a 20 percent chance of getting hit....AND HE DOES!! ARGHHH!

I have a bad temper unfortunately and I have thrown many a controller many a time. I have also yelled incoherently at the systems and games themselves on occasion. The last one I threw a controller for was Jet Set Radio Future. I like the game but I hate it too. Sometimes the controls are just ridiculously stupid. I have yelled at my PSP and DS too...but I'm not stupid enough to throw them across the room ;)

I'v only thrown a controller once... I was playing Diddy Kong Racing.. racing against the stupid whizzpig.. and I lost one to many times, and tossed the controller down, but not like against the wall or anything... that's the only time, I'm a pretty calm person :)

You know, I haven't thrown a controller for a long time. I've tossed it down, sure, but that was when I was done playing the game, and my carpet is padded.
There's too many ways to cheat these days for me to get frustrated in a game. GameSharks, Action Replays, Game Genies, CodeBreakers...modded Xboxes and trainers ;)

I tomahawk'd my Genny controller for some reason when I was much younger, it still works just fine, just that there's a little rattle from a piece of broken something in it.
I threw my launch PS2 controller at a wall in my room about a year ago because the X button stopped registering correctly and when playing Amplitude online and getting screwed because it wasn't working when I hit the button was getting me so mad I tossed it. Needless to say it died as the R2 button flew off only to be found 4 months later when I was moving out of the place.
Only two times I've really gotten agressive with any controllers or game things. Not to say that I've not tossed a temper tantrum before when the game was 'cheating' or I was getting owned in some multiplayer game.

I suffer from a short temper and have thrown many controllers in my time (well, my methods actually more involve smashing it into the coffee table, but you know)
Just recently its been cod2 veteran on the 360.. frankly all the american campaigns can get fucked. It sucks though, because I think i've smashed the controller so much that it actually only works sometimes now (the battery pack is loose or something), and new wireless controllers are $80 AUD down here... Each time I play cod2 I have to make sure I'm using the fucked controller, so the other one remains intact..
Also God of War has seen my ps2 controller get some serious abuse.

The only time I have actually tossed my controller in the last 3 years was from 1 game, and 1 game alone. I never throw controllers, however this game just got on my nerves so much that I actually spun my controller on the ground and walked off all pissed.
The game in question is:
Midnight Club 2
I was near the end of the game in one of the final races. The game is evil. It sets you up, and knows where you are at in relation to the NPC's (hehe non-player cars).
If any of you have played this game before, let me know if this sounds familiar:
You are almost to the finish line, you have managed to create a pretty decent gap between you and the 2nd place car. You are about 1-2 blocks from the finish line... it's almost over. You are about to cross the street to make the final stretch and.........OH MY GOD A BUS!!!!!!!!!! Suddenly you crash right into a bus that magically appears so it will obstruct your path. You are going so fast there is almost no way to avoid it.
Your car crashes and you make a scramble to get moving again but then EVERY car in the game rushes past you and now you are in last place...
It's like the game calculates how fast you are going and places a bus on the road driving at a speed where it sneaks up on you. It pulls out from a building to the left where you can't even see it coming.
The problem is that this happens... every... single... time...

I got so mad at Super Smash Bros. Melee that I threw the controller with my right hand to my left against the floor. It's a platinum controller, and it hit the carpet so hard and fast that the paint literally melted and left silver paint in the carpet. The controller pulled out carpet fiber when I picked it up and the top of the c-stick was half off. When I tried to play with the controller only one side worked. I took it up to EB and got a new one for free (thank you warranty!)

I didnt throw it as much as I tossed it and said "Forget this"
It was like a week ago and I had just gotten Mad Maestro. Freaking annoying some of the crap you have to deal with in that game.
Xbox 360.
Ridge Racer 6. I had the good sense to flip it onto the sofa cushion beside me and swear instead. I swear alot while playing Ridge 6. The game is a mother at the end. I'm persisting, but it's fuckin' hard.
I don't do it often but I do remember being totally shocked that I actually smashed a Cube controller into pieces once. I didn't think that a Cube controller could break. I think that it was Super Mario Sunshine that broke the final straw.

Another victom of random Xbox Ninja Gaiden violence, right here. I broke a controller because of that game. Great game, but damn frustrating.
All the Mega Man games piss me off, too. Especially the early ones. If you died, you had to start practicaly all the way back at the beginning. And if you did make it to the boss, you'd die there and have to start all the way back at the beginning.
Makes me mad just thinking about it.

Last controler I destroyed was a PS/2 duleshock.
Just sort of squeezed it and the screws poped out and some
sholder buttons went flying.
But sony are arseholes and controllers STILL cost the same
as they did at launch so I fixed it with some scotch tape :D

Ahh the memories. Its been a long time, I have learned to calm down lol. But the best one, and I regretted it, was with my Vaus controller for Arkanoid back when it was released. Can't remember which levfel, but I stood up and threw the controller as if it were a baseball, against the TV. It cracked, and never worked again.
Still one of my favorite games to this day. Sometimes the things you love most invoke the most passionate of reactions!

Yep, I suspect several games are like this, Smuggler's Run included (also by RockStar Games).
You're chugging along doing fine when suddenly it seems the game does everything in its power to throw something at you to f--- you up. The Smuggler's Run cops are simply INHUMAN- they stay on you as if tethered to your bumper by a rubber band! I can only get up to the 10th mission & dont have enough time to get to (what I think is) the final pickup point, so I quit out of frustration.
I've also noticed in Midnight Club (dont have the game anymore) that NPC cars in oncoming traffic seem to swerve into/toward you- wouldnt they try to turn AWAY?

I broke my prized Fountech AirStyle a few months ago playing Culdcept on the PS2. I felt really bad afterwards. Had I have visited the GameFAQ forum BEFORE I got mad I would have known that the AI cheats in this game and maybe it would have been saved.
It all worked out for the better though; because it forced me to order the new Sega branded AirStyle from Lik Sang and I'm happy because it works A LOT better than the old one did.

Well - I did it again today with Call of Duty 2 (360).
I'm doing the D-Day mission on Veteran difficulty. It's hard to tell who's who on this level, there's so much going on. Every time I make it to the top of the hill, I get my head blown off.

Exactly. As you see the screen get red with blood, you know the next checkpoint is 2 seconds in front of you.
Call of Duty 2 on Veteran is the most infuriating gaming experience I've had in a long time (yet I keep coming back). I've never actually thrown the 360 controller...but I've come so close.

Wow you have a high level of restraint.
Just yesterday I was unable to find my screwdriver used with the 4.5mm security bit. I threw a huge fit. Indented the kitchen trash can, Threw a whole bin of 50+ genesis games onto the floor, and tossed the plastice bit holder out onto the lawn.
Additionaly, last night I was unable to get a copy of populous working, you can guess what happened. 3 copies of populous and a blank screen on evey one, what BS.

6 years ago. I was playing Rayman 2: The Great Escape For the N64. I was at the final boss, his second form. You couldn't take a sinngle freaking hit or else you'd die and have to start the whole 2nd form of the boss over from the begining!! And that freak had a life bar!! After so many attempts I slammed my blue N64 controller down on my the floor in frustation. That had to be perhaps the only tiem I can remember abusing a controller. I never did finish that game, and you know what? I don't give a rat's anus that I didn't. Screw the final boss of Rayman 2!!

I get easily frustrated. I have thrown controllers a couple times, but not frequently. I once threw my Wavebird during Weapon Masters Mode on Soul Calibur II and it bounced off my PS2 and came back to me unscathed. Gotta love Nintendo's quality. Surprisingly enough, the PS2 suffered no damage as well despite how fragile the casing on Sony products are these days (although that might have contributed to the current problem of the front cover of the disk tray coming off all the time)
When I was about 10 I was getting pissed at some of the last levels of Power Rangers: The Game and was throwing the Genesis controller at the TV and punching the screen. My mom yelled at me to stop before I broke the TV (yeah, like a 10-year old girl can break a TV screen with her fists, honestly!)
I was getting really frustrated w/a couple parts of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for the XBox and with the controller still in my hands I was whipping it about in a spazzed-out tantrum of sorts and knocked loose one of the breakaway parts, then had to scramble madly to plug them back together. I also spent much of this tantrum screaming to my boyfriend over the phone and my mom walked into my room and yelled at me for being loud.
For the most part now, I shake the controller (or handheld) in a sort of tantrum-spaz or slap my palm or fist against my thigh or bed or table or chair. I'll swear a lot, say "C'mooooonnn!" in a whiny voice, rant and rave to my boyfriend, and/or let out a ton of exasperated sighs.
Other things I have thrown in a rage have included cell phones (which ironically resulted in getting a new, better phone because the one I threw wouldn't turn on and had to be replaced), cordless phones, shoes (I'm a chick, y'know, a shoe's my best weapon LMAO), books, and TV and/or VCR remotes. I try not to break any video game related stuff because I'd rather spend what little money I can spare on stuff I don't already have than stuff I need to replace that I already had.

i think it's a reqirement to beat ninja gaiden for xbox you ave to through your controller across the room at least 5 times, and in ng black's hard mode you go through multiple xbox's in completion.
but seriously i have the worst temper when playing video games. luckly i can keep calm during multiplayer. but also luckly no one's video taped me playing games alone. that'd be all over your tube in minuites.

i myself have never thrown a controller but i have felt like it many times.years ago back when the nes first came out i was out at a friends house and he was playing the game trojan i think or it may have been castlevania am not for sure now but he got so mad at that game he quitely got up,unplugged the nes, took it outside and smashed it into the ground.he then quitely came back into the house sat down for 5 mintues or so went back outside picked up the nes which had its top broken off came back inside sat the broken top back on stuck the game back in and turned it back on and started playing again.i just sat there with my mouth open and my eyes wide open in shock.its funny now that i think back about that time and am still amazed the the nes stlled worked.later he taped the nes up with tape and got a few more years out of it untill he bought a sega genesis.

The only times I've ever thrown a controller in my life were when I seriously felt the controller was at fault, and caused me to die/miss or whatever. I haven't done it in forever, until Guitar Hero.
Cut and paste from my post on another board about this issue:
No One Knows on Expert is a hard song, but not only is it hard, it's the kind of song you can try once a day before wanting to destory things. I fail 4 or 5 times, usually because the ****ing guitar wouldn't go into star power when I needed it to.
The back of the guitar directly underneath the strum bar finds my knee in rapid succession. Upon my next try, only the orange and blue buttons work. Unsuprisingly, I fail the song yet again, in record time.
I hear something rattle inside the guitar so I figure I just knocked something loose, so I opened it up, found the rattling culprit and saw nothing loose. So heres what the insides of the guitar look like.
http://flamevault.com/~jesus/random/...o/IMG_1585.jpg
http://flamevault.com/~jesus/random/...o/IMG_1586.jpg
These next two pictrues show whats rattling. This little board is held in place by a couple of slots in the guitars plastic shell, as you can see in the first two pictures. I assume this is the tilt sensor? I bet it doesn't work at all now.
http://flamevault.com/~jesus/random/...o/IMG_1587.jpg
My camera has the uncanny ability to focus on the background when using a flash. Time for a new camera, maybe I should introduce it to my knee as well.
http://flamevault.com/~jesus/random/...yro/rattle.jpg
Even though this next picture blows, this clearly illustrates the problem. The two leads off the left side of this board are going to the buttons, and when I smashed the thing against my knee it obviously cracked, destroying the communication between the buttons and the rest of the piece.
http://flamevault.com/~jesus/random/...o/IMG_1590.jpg
So, here's my question. Is this fixable? I know there are some really crazy hardmods in the pc gaming world where you can literally use a pencil to connect transistors to unlock certain features or more pipelines or whatever... would something like that be possible here, or do I just have to spring for another guitar because I'm an idiot?
EDIT: Well, guess I answered my own question. The pencil trick does indeed work, and it survived a full round of Ace of Spades on Expert, and the star power even works still too. I'm awesome, I'd break more stuff if I knew I could fix it.

Last night...
My friend has one of those 3rd party NES systems that are $30 new (rip off..) and has some ghetto ass controllers! It rarely moves the way I want to go in the game and there's some silly throttle button that makes the game go crazy if you hit it. That thing pisses me off so much, I end up tossing that controller often.
