Just to be clear, is there anything you can do in FFXI that doesn't infer the extra charge? If not, that's a bit disappointing - but one could purchase the games in question and potentially make a profit by trading them in somewhere.

^ I think they give you a free month, at least they did on the PC/PS2 versions.

You get a free month on the 360, but you don't get Tetra Master. Not like anybody cares about Tetra Master. Except me.

I think it's a pretty grim indication of the quality of FFXI when retailers are giving it away FREE one month after release.

I would consider it less an indication of FFXI itself than of:
A. Consumers still have to pay the monthly fee if they want to play beyond that on month. SE could be betting that people will be drawn into FFXI.
B. It's for a console of a manufacturer not known for being friendly to RPGs. There may not be enough of a installed RPG fanbase on the 360, and SE may have simply overestimated demand.
And it's not free - you can't simply walk in to a CC and grab a copy.

You might be on to something. Square/Enix is probably betting on making more money with the monthly fee than the initial software purchase.
Silly as it may sound, by simply adding achievements, SE could have sold 2 or 3 times more copies.

Since playing it for a year will set you back about $150, I'm really surprised that any MMO still charge for the initial software.

its better than paying 50 for 60 for the game by itself that way your spending money on months rather than a copy of the game.

I might actually do that as I don't have Kameo yet and I've been meaning to purchase FFXI.
