View Full Version : Tell me what I can do with my PSP 2.5 Firmware

I just got a new 1 GB memory card for my PSP, and unfortunately I've updated my firmware to 2.5 already. I'm having a hard time finding out online what all I can do now. Pretty much I want to know what homebrew, emulation, etc. I can run on my system. Also interested in trying out games before I buy them, so does any of the UMD loaders work for 2.5?

Pretty much, can someone help me figure out what I can do now?! I regret updating. :(

You can upgrade to version 2.7. :)

You can run emulation on a 2.5 if you have Grand Theft Auto LCS. You could downgrade it; I'm still leery of it even though folks here have done it.

AFAIK, no eloaders on 2.5 at all.

The same applies for 2.6 as well. It sucks that there are new games coming out that are good and forcing an upgrade-I don't want to give up my emulation capabilites.

Ugh. Why'd you do it, Cos?

You can actually do a lot with v2.5 now. About 75-80% of homebrew apps that run on 1.5 will run on higher firmware with the GTA exploit. Nothing runs on 2.7 though. I don't think there is an actual list, so you'll have to look at the requirements of each app and see if it'll work. I know offhand there are Flash players, PDF readers, OS shells, WiFi radio and a bunch of other crazy homebrew stuff that'll work. No .ISO loaders though since they require kernel mode to run.

BTW, downgrading isn't an option for you. You can only downgrade with 1.51, 1.52 & 2.00 firmware.

No UMD loaders for you. They're strictly a 1.5 thing.

Check out fanjita.org. It's got the GTA eBoot loader that you'll need to run homebrews, as well as a list of what runs well with it.

As far as I know, you cannot downgrade any PSP whose firmware is higher than 2.0. You can check out www.psp-hacks.com for updates on how projects like that are proceeding though (if they exist).

My favourite emulator is probably NesterJ, which works well with the eBoot loader. I've got about 70 NES games or so on my memory card (2GB) and all work great on my 2.0 PSP.

I gave up on the emulation scene for the PSP and upgraded so I could play Megaman Powered Up. Emulation was great to have for that short while, but it's not worth waiting for ways to play anything past your firmware.

I'm at 2.6 and I'm running the GTA exploit for NesterJ, SNES9xTYL, and DGen.

I'll probably leave it at 2.6 until 2.7 is cracked. If it isn't, I know I'll have to update sooner or later.

You can play Powered Up and pretty much all UMD games without having to upgrade your firmware with the RunUMD app.

Yup. Just have a little patience. I bought Syphon Filter and I'm now playing it on my 1.5 PSP.
