View Full Version : Sega CD value?

If I recall correctly (and lord only knows about that...) the DP Guide includes values for the consoles as well as the games. Maybe that's only for some consoles.

Anyway, the online list for the Sega CD doesn't include a value for the unit itself. Can anybody tell me what a Sega CD in good working condition is worth (preferably Model 2)? I'm thinking of picking one up because I need another reason to get behind on my bills.

if you find it Locally chances are you will get a model 2 Genesis and CD for $15-$20 with a controller and at least one PSU. Go online and you are looking at about $50-$65 after shipping. Find a model 1 piggyback locally and you are looking at $30 from most pawns and flee's with a model 1 genesis with a controller and at least one PSU.. online you are looking at $70-90 for a nice piggyback, if you are lucky enough to get one that wasn't abused.

Loose Model 2: $20-$25.

A good working model 1 higher, $30-$40.

Naturally you want to go for the CD-X or the X'Eye, or better still, a Laseractive with the Sega module, but they're a bit pricier.

I'm almost embarrassed not knowing this, but can someone refresh me on which is model 1 and which is model 2?

AFAIR, Model 1 was the one w/ the motorised drawer and model 2 was the "pop open top."

Whats surprised me here is I remember when I bought my model 2, I had a choice between the model 1 and the model 2 and the guy at the vid store told me to go w/ the model 2, apparently the model 1's were notorious for defects, something to do w/ the mechanics of the drawer or something.

At any rate if all of this is true, then whats surprised me is why the model 1 (supposedly prone to defect) be worth more than the model 2?

BTW at the same store, when I bought my model 2, they had a CDX there which I could've bought for $65 Cdn, or about $5 U.S.

If I knew then what I know now....... :(

Well, I have a model 2, and wish I had a model one. I like the way it sits on top of an original genny, plus I had one back in the day.

For my "collecting" purposes, I tend to prefer the original model, as opposed to further (ceaper to manufacture) revisions.

Like my Sunnyvale Heavy Sixer Atari! They made those in the thusands, not the millions! :-D

I have 2 first version sega cd consoles (front-loading/motorized drawer), and this is my 2nd and 3rd.

I have never had a single problem with any of them - ever.

On a side note, the pop-top has been known to have many problems with "freezing" - where the screen freezes mid-game. My friend (back in the day) bought one - took it home and hooked it up correctly, started playing, and the game (Dragon's Lair :-D ) froze up on him. He took it back and got another new one, brought it home - and the same thing happened.

That's my experience with the sega cd. Stick with version one, if you can find one in good working condition.

I just got my second one at a flea market for the equivalent of $7.50.

I have the Model 1, Model 2, and 2 CDX's I love the Model one the best. The CDX will free up some outlet space as it only needs one power supply. I have had some problems with the CDX's that i have reading some full motion video games. Anyone else had some problems with titles on the CDX?

I am hard core sega hardware so I have them all, not one problem. The problems with the model 1 piggyback is kids would eject the tray and someone would come along and step on it braking it off OR plug in the power supply for another console ZZZZT. step on a model 2 top loader and it will probably survive
