Not sure if it's called the NES Lockout chip, but i'm thinking you know what i mean.. The chip that causes the NES to reset if it doesn't detect a game, or if the game is too dirty to be read.

Anyway, how does one go disabling that chip safely without frying the NES?

Simple: cut pin 4. Google can probably throw up a diagram if you need it.

From wich side? Fourth pin from the left or from the right?

There should be a little indent on one corner of the lockout chip on the top, that's where pin 1 starts. The pins will run down that side where the indent is - 1, 2, 3... when the bottom of that side is reached then the pins come back up the other side.

Don't just cut it, try to bend it up and solder a small length of wire to connect it to GND.

Also before the "that'll 'fix' my NES?! that'll 'fix' my NES?!" posts, I have performed this a few times where the NES still wouldn't work. I also attempted to replace the 10NES chip, then mod that chip again - no change. (yeah I know there are other things to do, did them) So while many people point to this as a cure-all, NES's still die and this won't necessarily bring them back to life.

I did this on one of my NESes. I tried to unsolder the pin and then bend it up because I was lacking cutters of the proper size. Instead I ended up just breaking the pin off the chip. Since there was now no way to easily connect it to ground, I simple closed the system up and tried it. It still works, and it doens't blink anymore, but it will sometimes just stay a solid color, just without the blink.

Anywhere on the metal that runs around the outside of the board.
