Just wondering what you guys would class as the greatest things ever included in the box along with the game? Along the likes of:

Starfox (N64 - ALL) The N64 Rumble Pack. Excellent.

MarioKart 64 (N64 - NTSC/J only?) Black/Grey controller

House of the Dead 2 (DC) DC gun. Smashing.

Any other non-hardware items? I'm sure we never got the sweetie in Gunstar Heroes here in the UK?

And what are all those crazy things that come in the various Sakura Taisen games? Keyrings and pinbadges and such?

Do you mean like the following?

Atari Jaguar's "White Men Can't Jump", which came with the four-player team tap......

F1 Race for the black-and-white Gameboy, which came with some sort of 4-player link.....

and Kasumi Ninja, again for Jaguar, which came with the headband?

Not that I would classify any of that as cool stuff....... O_O

Lunar 2 had a lot of great shit that came with it.

I couldn't stand the DC gun, so I'll vote Virtua Cop w/ gun :)

Also, Nights w/ analog controller was quite hot.

Game demos are always cool, too. Final Fantasy VIII demo in Brave Fencer Musashiden (jp), Final Fantasy VII demo with Tobal 1 (US), and of course Metal Gear Solid 2 demo with Zone of the Enders. Long long long list of those little treats.

and if we can count nifty pre-order stuff, the Viewtiful Joe bobblehead I got for preordering the first game kicks ass, even if those little things on his head break off way too easy :(

An enclosed rumble-pack is considered excellent stuff?

Magnavox Odyssey from 1972 had the most enclosed extras:
Racing Cars, Boardgames, Dice, Soldiers, Spaceships, money, Chips, Wax Slates, Plastic Pens, etc...

Atari VCS games came packed with special controllers like keyboards, kids controller, Key pads, Booster Grip, Flight Commander, Cosmic Command controller, Foot Craz, Joyboard, Video Touch pad...

Each Infocom classic game had a cool extra:

the rubber centipede in The Lurking Horror,
the money pouch with money in Plundered Hearts
the swivel stick in Hollywood Hi-Jinx
the brochue in Battletech
3D Glasses in Leather Goddesses
the sound maker in Leather Goddesses 2
the iron-on in Moonmist
the fluff and microscopic spacefleet in HHGTTG
the spaceship, the face, balloons, matches, coins etc, etc

Rainbirds Adventures always had some little extra in the box too.

Life and Death on PC, came with surgeons mask and rubber gloves.

Robot Rascals on C-64 included a boardgame

The last Ninja on C-64 came with a Ninja mask and rubber star thingie

Star Saga has space ship tokens

Many Japanese games like Sakura Taisen are also LE, so they released two versions, standard (CD only) and LE (bigger box with extra stuff). Love Hina and Space Channel 5 and many more Japanese releases have LEs with cool extras, but more common are normal CD releases, especially for the west.

Each Infocom classic game had a cool extra:

Origin was pretty good about that stuff, too. Tiger Claws w/ Wing Commander, that merc guide with Strike Commander, and the maps with the Ultimas. Good times :(

Also, Space Quest IV had that sweet tabloid that was used for copy protection. That rocked. Conquest of Camelot had a nice map, and I'm trying to remember if Conquest of the Longbow came with anything extra...hrm...i think just the gameboard...

The days before PC games were just small boxes and discs in paper sleeves kicked ass.

I liked the little Robotech super deformed figure that you got when you bought the Robotech game for GBA.

the lunar games had some cool stuff in the box for psx.

Oblivion on 360 has one of the coins you use as money in the game.

The original Army men game for pc came with plastic army men.

Six button joypad that came with the x68000 version of Fatal Fury 2 (Garoudensetsu 2), and the version of Forgotten Worlds for the PC-Engine that came with a pad, as well. I think Super SF II ' for the x68000 comes with a dongle that lets you plug a Genesis controller into the x68000 - also cool.

Atari Jaguar's "White Men Can't Jump", which came with the four-player team tap......

Unfortunately, the multitap came with the "White Men Can't Jump" game.

The last Ninja on C-64 came with a Ninja mask and rubber star thingie

That was LN2 actually. And not all copies came with it, only the first printing. On top of that, some shops refused to stock the mask/star with the game because of worries about kids running around being ninjas and hurting people

(there was a whole anti-ninja thing in the UK during the 80s, which led amongst others to why TMNT got turned into TMHT instead)

So a properly "complete" Limited Edition LN2 with everything now goes for over 40 GBP ($70) on eBay usually.

Ok, someone help me out here. I cannot seem to find the game in question. I think it is a genesis game? a shmup?

Anyways, the game came with a special glove. Where it covered your thumb. It was a promotional thing saying how the game is so intense you had to wear a protective glove to play the game. (haha)

I had the advert somewhere around here but I can't seem to find it.

Yep, considering it was the first console rumble pack. At the time, it was an amazing experience playing the absolutely fabulous Starfox 64 with this extra level of immersion.

Some of my favorites:

-R: Racing Evolution (Gamecube) with Pac-Man vs. included.

-Need For Speed Most Wanted: Black Edition (PS2, Xbox), included a bonus DVD.

-Animal Crossing (Gamecube) included a Memory Card 59 with a special gift.

-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game (NES) included a coupon for a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut. I still remember using the coupon there after getting the game for Christmas one year.

Konamistyle.com offers all sorts of crazy ass limited edition sets for the Japanese bemani games that come out. Most come with a bonus soundtrack and a bunch of trinkets, my favorite one to date is the beatmaniaIIDX 9th Style one which came with:

V-Rare Soundtrack
Visual Emotions 2 DVD
Awesome metal Keychain/Cellphone mascot
Stickers for IIDX controllers, including an arcade sized turntable sticker for those with Arcade Style Controllers.

I'm often surprised by how many bonuses came with many of the old Famicom Disks, like stickers, comic books and so on.
I also miss the 'included game' that used to come in the box with most of the old consoles... now you have top buy everything extra. I remember being surprised the first time I bought my first PS1, I was really expecting a memory card to be included with the console. I got FF7 the same day and I had to go back to the shop to get a memory card...

The Cho Aniki game on Super Famicom comes with a mini-CD with music that is, uh... awesomely manly, for lack of a better word. Speaking of mini-CDs, I think Athena on Famicom and Cotton 100% on Super Famicom also came with them, and the CD with Athena had to AT LEAST been better than the game.

I'm quite looking forward to my Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria limited edition Artifact Box arriving. The game comes in a big fancy box with a soundtrack, a very nice figure of Silmeria, a metal accessory, and an art book. It's expensive (roughly $170 to import it), but it should be well worth it. The first Valkyrie Profile had a similar box, and its price has remained firm over all these years.

The pack-in for Action 52 on the NES is one of the craziest pack-ins there is. If you weren't aware, when you open up the box for the first time, one of the programers comes out and slaps you in the face for buying it.

The famicom version of miracle warriors came in neat plastic case with a large cloth map and a pewter figure.

aeroblasters!

It was called air buster on the Sega Genesis US version. That "cool dude" wearing his HIP glove still haunts me. On a side note, if you had two of them, they would make good glove at an Anime convention if you were dressing up as Terry from Fatal Fury.

They were a video gamer's best friend in the form of a publishing company. They brought above the call of duty service from great voice acting in the early cd years to boxed remake for favorites like Lunar, Arc the Lad, and Growlanser.

My top three:

1. Shenmue the movie DVD with the X-Box release of Shenmue II.

2. The fake tabloid that came with Zak McCraken and the Alien Mindbenders on C64.

3. The map of the Caribbean that came with Pirates! for the C64. I'm pretty sure if you dropped me into the middle of the Gulf of Mexico I could make my way to St. Kitts from Cartagena based on the amount of time I studied that map.

Come to think of it, the Commodore 64 was the king of cool extras.
