Whenever I buy an older console.. I ALWAYS label the AC adapter that comes with it; and tests as working, 1st party one or not. I find it easier to find them with a quick label than comparing voltages, amperage and pin polatities later on.
Anyways.. I've had this NES top-loader for years in storage and as I said in the thread about cleaning circuit boards.. decided to "spruce it up" a bit today. I took it apart, cleaned the circuit board, polished the rusty RF gaurds with fine steel wool, and put it back together. Testing time.. and I pulled out the cables and adapter labled "NES 2". Mind you.. several years ago I knew nothing about how important it was to match voltages and amperages with the right console. I just assumed that if the adapter that shipped with the unit worked.. no problem; and this top loader had always worked fine the few times I had farted around with it.
So I looked at the A/C adapter today and noticed it didn't quite match. I think what the previous owner did was grab a 1st gen NES power adapter and had used it. On the adapter it says:
Model #: NES-002
outpt: 9V @ 1.3 Amps
For use with NES-001 only (which is the toaster)
On the bottom of my top loader it says:
Model #: NES-101
rating: 9V@ 850 mAmps
..needless to say I was concerned. These don't match.. so off I went tearing apart my room and storage looking for the right adapter. I didn't have one (of course) because this IS the one that came with my NES II (no box.. it was loose) so I started searching for one that matched.. but couldn't find an exact one.
Soes I go back to my NES II and flip it over and notice it also says: "Use with AC adapter no. NES-002 only". At this point I'm not thinking.. my brain's fried by now so off I go to eBay looking for a NES-002 adapter. I find one by model # and think "cool" this will match my NES II, so I double check the bottom of my top-loader once again to make sure.. then it dawns on me.. isn't this what I already have? Sure 'nuff.. I have 3 of these already.
My question is.. obviously there is a discrepancy between what this adapter puts out and what the unit needs. After reading a couple of weeks ago how too much amperage could fry something that doesn't need it.. I'm a little concerned. And also.. was there an A/C adapter included with top loaders that matched the voltage and amperage requirements of the model 2 completely? Or.. were there later model NES-002 adapters released that had a statement on them saying that they could be used on BOTH models (despite the amperage difference)? All of my NES-002s say they're for the NES-001 ONLY. I'm really confused now.
