Sony: If We Make It, They Will Buy
http://1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3150935

SCEE CEO brimming with confidence regarding PS3.

When Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves admits that "key launch titles" will slip into 2007 he also admits that to Sony, it doesn't really matter what ships at launch.

"We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games," Reeves told Computer and Video Games in an interview. During the same interview, Reeves admits that Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm and Formula One will all see release in early 2007 within the PS3 "launch window." Insomniac's gritty World War II shooter (with aliens) Resistance: Fall of Man will be there at launch according to Reeves.

It's not games like Heavenly Sword slipping into the "launch window" instead of the "launch day" category that is concerning -- it's Sony admitting that even if there were no games to purchase, consumers would still be lining up en masse to grab the PS3.

We get it, Sony, you were the market leader for two solid generations of console making, but you might be placing a little too much faith in the perceived strength of your brand to ask people to fork over $600 for your console regardless of the available software.

The thing is that he's probably actually right. Five million may not shoot off shelves, but I think that if you stuck a new label on a tin of beans, showed some fancy screen-shots and called it the PS3 some people would still buy it at this point.

Wow, Sony just gave Microsoft another customer. Hello XBox Live.

If Xbox Live could talk, it would probably say "Hello" back! But since it can't, it'll just make a regular charge to your credit card.

I hear the Perfect Dark Zero demo hit the Marketplace today. I can't wait to give it a go, I'm on the fence about this game.

Sounds like Nintendo's tune circa 1995.

How that work for Nintendo?

Oh that's right... they ended up in 2nd. And now 3rd place. Arrogance goes before the fall.

And what else did it do to Nintendo? It humbled them somewhat. To the point that they don't really get into to many pissing matches with the other companies. They simply do what they want to do and try to make it fun for all of us in the process. Sometimes it isn't about how big your "dick" is. It is more about what you do with it. and maybe where you aim your stream. Don't piss into the wind.....

So your point is what?

That it'll be good for Sony to lose 1st & fall to 2nd place?

Aside - I'm a little disillusioned with Nintendo. This last generation of Nintendo games has not risen to the level of "masterpiece" like the SNES and N64 generations.

I agree that it sounds like a ego-trip, but its sorta true. Playstation is so popular and known so alot of people will buy it.

There will be games :P Im also so tired to hear about the PS3 price all the time. If they dont like the price, dont buy it. It isnt harder than that.

The SOEE man is right. Even if the bulk of the launch titles are less-than-stellar, and AAA titles slip until after launch, it will still sell.

It happened with the Gamecube. SSBM was a marquee title, it dropped after the system.

It happened with the Xbox 360. Dead or Alive 4 was to be a must-have, it saw a delay as well.

It happened with PS2.
It happened with the DS.
It happened with the PSP, although Lumines makes that debatable IMO.

It happened with HD-DVD. What were the launch titles again?

Regardless of the name on the system, people will buy it because it's new tech.

Seems to me like this could have been added onto one of the other PS3 threads. No offense.

I believe that once you are on top in the VG world you eventually get arrogant to the point where you will fall...hard.

I think Sony is heading that way. When? I don't know, but they are heading there.

Yes, my point is that Sony needs to taste a little humble pie. Not even the almighty Microsoft is as belligerent as Sony about console gaming.
Quite frankly, Sony thinks their sh!t doesn't stink.

Y'know I hadn't even thought about that, but you're right. With the exception of Melee and perhaps Paper Mario and Metroid Prime, the GC hasn't been home to alot of the instant classics that tends to be a given with Nintendo consoles.

Wow... that just ruined my day. O_O

Everytime Sony makes some kind of statement about the PS3, I find myself wanting it less and less. I may goto the "darkside" and get a 360, or the more likely case of getting a Wii.

If this is the way they're going to act/think, then FUCK YOU Sony.

Okay, Sony - You just go right on ahead and dream.

I'm not buying a PS3 - and I can afford one.

BTW Sony - NO console has ever remained in 1st place for 3 cycles in a row. Not even the mighty Nintendo could pull it off. You have no more legs in which to shoot yourself.

Honestly, they could call it the "Sony Crapbox 3" and people would still line up in droves for it. The fact that it says "Sony" already gurantees its success regardless.

Wow, an F1 game. The only type of racing game I could care less about. And considering that EA abandoned their F1 series after F1 2002, nobody else cares about them either.

You're just clueless. :)

EA dropped their F1 line after EA released F1 Career Challenge for the Xbox and PS2, and F1 Challenge 99'-02' for the PC's, the sequel to F1 2002. They stopped because Sony got a exclusive license and EA lost their rights. And you're an American, everywhere else Formula One is right up there with soccer when it comes to popular sports. It does matter outside of the United States.

This is regrettably true.

Besides the fact that this is indeed an ego trip (but a realistic one), is there really any argument against Sony here? Their system costs too damn much, but the horrible rumors have been laid to rest (once again, for now).

Sony is where Nintendo was 10 years ago, and only time will tell if they just made the biggest mistake in their life. I won my 360, do not have the mula for the PS3, and will save up for the Wii. As a gamer that grew up with Nintendo, I am looking forward to giving them my business. Every console has its fair share of strengths, I just see Nintendo making the games I want to play in the future.
