I'm sure we've all had 2 player sessions of Tetris on the Gameboy. But what about more uncommon link-ups?
Did any of you guys ever actually have 8 player link on whatever Lynx game it was? I can't say I've ever had a GameGear link-up ever.
But what about home consoles? We used to have syslink Command and Conquer on the Playstation in my mate's garage. Anyone ever had 2player Time Crisis 2 PS2 sessions?
And I still await the day I can have a game of 2player Virtual ON: OT.

My system link setups are all a work in progress. In many cases I have multiple copies of games, but not 2 systems. For instance I still need to get a second PS2 with i.link support. Although my brother has one. I am just waiting for him to bring it over and then we can do some Unreal Tournament and Lethal Skies II. I do want to setup some TimeCrisis as well but that involves even more hardware (guncon's), so that will be a ways off.
My VOOT setup is complete though :) I have 2 Dreamcasts setup for system link, with 2 sets of Saturn Twin Sticks. This is nice because when I get another saturn I can use them on the saturn or the Dreamcast for Virtual On system link. I could use them on the saturn now, but it would be splitscreen.

I always wanted to do system link VOOT, but my roommate and I could never find the link cable. We ended up playing a lot of split screen action :(
Wipeout was awesome over the PS1 system link.
Something a little unconventional is hooking up multiple Xboxes running Forza and have each one render a different point of view so that you can actually get a larger field of view. I know some other games do it, but none are as good as Forza :)

Time Crisis 2 and 3 linkup for PS2 is amazing. It's less cramped then playing off of the same screen, and is very true to the arcade. No lag at al either. If you can get access to the stuff to try it out and you are a lightgun fan, I highly recommend trying it!

I've played Warbirds for the Lynx via the link cable, but only against one other opponent. Still a lot of fun.

I would post my SEGA link-up page again but I've already posted it not too long ago. Refer to me as the link-up fetishist. :P

I believe Checkered Flag was the only game to support 8 players but I'm probably wrong. LOL

Formula 1 via the PlayStation system link kicked ass, that's also the best F-1 game to be released to this day in my opinion. Also played Bushido Blade with the link, which was cool because it was in first person perspective.
I can't bring myself to buy another set of TwinSticks and set up a VirtualOn Operation Moongate (I prefer it over any other release) rig since I let the arcade machine get away so cheap years ago. :( $495, both seats, just after a full refurbishment, 15 miles away - was a day late.

Link-up C&C on the PS is an odd-one. If you both sit there for 20mins building a decent base and army, the system starts to seriously slow down. The minute you send these troops into battle it's down to literally 5fps. It's still fun and playable, but flawed.
Were there any other Gameboy games that used the 4player adapter that came with F-1 Race? Bomberman maybe?
What about 8player Mario Kart on the GC? This is possible with 2 BBAs, yes?

That's a damn shame, man.

I used to love playing red alert with my buddy next door, we'd play for hours and hours.
We were trying to rig up a cable from his house to mine, we even had an intercom set up for it, the set-up never quite got off the ground ;)

I've always wanted to link more than 2 gameboys together to play Faceball, that would just rock.

A few years ago I picked up a link cable for the PS because I had a few games that were only linkable multiplayer. The problem is I have a PSone and it doesn't have that serial link port so in order to play something like Descent, I'll need to get 2 original Playstations which isn't cheap when it comes to just wanting to tap a few games like so. The main reason be it is because back in Middle and High school some friends and I did lots of Descent dial-up and it was fun as hell, and now-in-days we just LAN/TCP/IP stuff.
Also, awhile back because I had a few dreamcasts I bought some extra copies of Quake3 and Unreal Turny so one day I could link up and do multiplayer of 8 instead of 4... But I don't know how to set that up, or if it's even possible without web access to a Dreamcast server.

Descent
How is Descent Maximum compared to the PC Descent games? I loved the series on PC and it's still fun to fly around those levels every now and then.

Unreal Tournament nor Quake 3 utilize the VS CABLE for the Dreamcast. Unreal Tournament currently has no network functionality. The dedicated servers run by sega were taken offline in 2003.
The NTSC-U/C version of Quake 3 Arena is still online. The PAL version is no longer functional, since Sega of Europe recently terminated a Dreamarena authentication server which was required for PAL Q3 to reach the internet.
The NTSC version however does not have any such dependencies, and can be run on a local LAN, thus making it online forever. This will be expensive or complicated depending on your course of action. You would need 2 broadband adaptors, 2 dreamcast's, 2 copies of dreamcast q3, and a central dedicated server hosting the game session. Dreamcast Quake 3 does not have p2p capabilities. A dedicated server is required. Your other option would be setting up 2 PC-DC servers, which involves routing the Dreamcast's stock modem through a PC 56k modem and onto the network. This would mean you would need anywhere from 2-3 PC's.
Currently the only Dreamcast games which use the system link VS CABLE are the following:
Aero Dancing F
Aero Dancing i
F355 Challenge
Sega Tetris
Virtual On Oratorio Tangram
Note: The fan service discs for Aero Dancing F & i do not have VS support. You need the original releases of these games.

Back in college, I played a lot of NGPC and GBC linked with a guy I worked with. In between GB Tetris matches, we played a lot of Super Mario Bros DX and Warlocked. Also, plenty of KOF and Cardfighters on the NGPC.
