View Full Version : The Top 100 Worst Video Games Of All Time?

Alright.

So now we know what the best 100 video games of all time are. But what if we were to turn the tables a bit, and figure out what the worst 100 video games of all time are?

With AB Positive's blessing, I am compiling a list of what everyone here at DP thinks the worst video games are. To me, it'd be more interesting to see what everyone's idea of a bad game is, because it's much more subjective. Ask 10 people what their favorite NES game is, and probably 9 or 8 people would say "Super Mario Bros.". (Or, Super Mario Bros. 3, as our new list shows. :P ) Ask 10 people what their most hated NES game is, and you'd probably get 10 different answers. It would be very interesting to see what number 1 all-time would be.

It will be much like the original concept: Everyone will make a list of their personal top 25, ranked in order, and send it to me at gapporin at online dot ie (Be sure to put something about "The Top 100 Worst Games" or somesuch in the subject line, or else it will probably get spam filter'd). I will then tabulate the votes and announce the worst games of all time. Sound fun?

I probably won't pull out all the stops like AB (with pictures and descriptions and what-not), but hopefully this will spark some interest among this community.

Voting will begin June 1, 2006. Voting will end June 30, 2006. I will announce the list July 7, 2006. The address to send your ballots in is gapporin at online dot ie.

Thank you, and have fun! :)

Might be easier just to have people listed their 25 crap games, and each vote counts as one point. Game with the most votes hence is the worst of all time ;)

Calm down fella. This is supposed to be for fun. If you don't like it, then don't participate. Otherwise, don't ruin the fun for those of us who don't have a stick lodged up their ass.

Based on what I have read of his posts, I don't think he was being sarcastic. If I am wrong, then so be it.

In any case, this is a cool idea and I will definitely be submitting a list.

I see where you're coming from, but I don't know why this would be more true for ranking bad games than good games.

Hey Gap if you want to go the AB+ route and do descriptions I'd be happy to help you wade through the crappery. :)

How about every person nominating 5 bad games?

I'm guessing you've never played Corpse Killer LOL

Also, I do not want to see anybody ranking Cybermorph. Cybermorph is a damn fine game, and it should not be dissrespected like that. Every time people mention the worst games, for some reason, a few people will bring up Cybermorph, and it makes me cringe to think that people would actually equate Cybermorph as one of the worst of all time. Cybermorph was actually a very, very, very good game, and there is easily 1000 games worse. SO I DON'T WANT TO SEE CYBERMORPH!!!!

Of course, now that I'm bringing it to peoples attention, it will probably get more votes. x_x

Actually, I think this list is going to be very fun. It's going to be a little bit harder to make the list, considering alot of these crappy games we've steered clear of, and it's much easier to list outstanding games, but there are definitely some stinkers out there. Best way to do it, is to think about every system you've owned, and which games have been the shittiest that you've run accross. Also might want to look at complete release lists and see if anything jumps out at you. For example, I've never played Time Killers for Genesis, but that game has a serious reputation as being one of the all time clunkers. So even though I haven't actually played it, it might make my list somewhere. Then again, maybe not.

Any version of Zelda.

Honest, I tried to like them, wasted many nights, played many versions from NES through GB (in German language even), Game Cube and even on CDi (I got all three CDi versions, well ok, in Zeldas Adventure you play as Zelda, that's different), that stupid green hat-wearing idiot with his Spock-pointy ears and that supposedly plinky-plunky super-cute music just goes on my nerves.

For me, they are one of the worst game(s) series in video gaming existence.

chrisbid and Jibba's remarks have reminded me of the SHMUPS.org philosophy behind such lists: They're a handy way to find out what the community likes.

If you feel that games are represented badly, it gives you a chance to promote (or bash!) games that you think don't deserve their reputation. There's no reason to make it personal.

I wouldn't call a game one of the "worst" because it has failed potential (it actually has to fail at everything it attempts, and I don't play bad games enough to know what qualifies). I think that's foolish (i.e. calling Morrowind one of the worst is ridiculous). But that is to be expected, and it leads to worthwhile discussion.

Is it proper to call Daikatana one of the worst games ever because of its terrible reputation and the way the players were treated? Arguably so. Even though the game itself - which is the only thing I personally judge a game based on - may not deserve this ranking, it's important to remember that this is judging people's reactions to games.

This isn't scientific at all, but rather a detour from memory lane into Retrogaming Hell. Whatever you hate most passionately should go into this list, if you so desire.

I personally have had an impulse to nominate Sengoku 2001, but I'm honest enough to admit that it's far better than too many other brawlers (for me that speaks more about the terrible state of many 80s Renegade clones than it does the supposed quality of that game, but whatever).

If you actually payed attention, you would've notice that you play as Zelda in two of the CD-i games - the other being Wand of Gamelon.

Alright, flame concluded. ;)

Also, I have to disagree with Doonzmore about Rocky & Bullwinkle (I assume it's the NES game). It plays pretty badly but it does a pretty incredible job replicating the look of the original TV show, and that counts for something (even if R&B looked shitty to begin with). That's just my take on it, though.

Of course you are right. Totally forgot about that one (I knew in the back of my mind there was another, I just wasn't sure which one of the two).

Actually, the CDi versions are the best of Zeldas in my opinion (Besides the super-annoying controls).

Now I want to know why you think that Superman 64 is bad. Truthfully, Even though you might think that it is bad, it has and had some promise. Flying through rings is always the point of scrutiny, but have you tried to play the other levels? They were very brain scrunching to get. And Instead of a lack of Supervillains like Shadow of the Apokalips, This is chocked full of them. Also, for a game that is still priced at 12 bucks a pop used, I think that it's namesake of being So-called "bad", it just shows that Superman 64 isn't as bad as one would think.

As for my opinion, I believe that Lunar: Dragon Song for DS would end up on the list.

Also, I believe that bible adventures gets a vote. not as bad as one would think, but not even god himself could make this game better. definite thumbs down.

It is your opinion, but personally I think they really aren't well chosen nominated choices. As Ed Oscuro said, they may somewhat turn out to being a hatred list. Same with comment about "Where's Waldo?", that's a fun little searching game! Found it to be highly similar to the book in color schemes and hiding Waldo.

Well, here's what I haven't found too great:
Razor Racing (PS) ...Horrible horrible game. Just WTF.
Adventures of Mighty Max (Genesis)

I remember glitches getting in the way and it was no fun at all. I think it does get a little more attention than it should, considering how many other bad games there are. But still, I would certainly say it is one of the top five worst games for the N64.

I always think it's funny when people say that Final Fantasy 7 is one of the worst games ever. A lot of people hate this game because they didn't respond well to the idea of a 3D FF game, or because it marked the end of the old-style FF and the beginning of the new. I can understand not personally liking the game, but to say that it is a bad game is bullshit. If it wasn't a Final Fantasy game, everyone would think it was awesome. For some it just didn't live up to the Final Fantasy name because it is quite a bit different from its predecessors.

I think that a lot of people are also annoyed by the fact that it was over-hyped when it came out, and truthfully is still an over-rated game. People hold it up to be the end all be all of video games, which it isn't. But there simply isn't a case to be made by anyone to suggest that it is a bad game. It's just people's personal bias against it. Play the game all the way through, don't try to compare it to FFVI, and then tell me that it is a horrible game.

I think some people are just bitter that ff 7 got more recongition then wild Arms and other rpgs around the time. FF 7 was a influential and a very hyped game. It was a very good for its time. The 2nd thing could be cause be bitter nintendo fanboys who think ff 7 caused playstation to win the 32/64 bit era in 97. The 3rd thing is people think it is cool to bash ff7 like board members at gamefaqs did.

FF 7 is not really a bad game. If someoene has games as far back as me will realize that. Overhype is not the same as being a bad game. While ff 7 was not in my greatest 50 games of all time list at atariage, it was a good game.

I felt ff 6 was overhyped, but I didn't think a bad game. I played some really bad 7800 and 2600 games along with nes games, and ff 7 is not in that league.

Anyway, here is what I want to see on this list:

Super Mario Sunshine (GCN)

That's all I can think of right now.

Sweet!!! I'm so glad somebody has the courage to step up and claim that a Mario game was ass. Cause Sunshine is more like Sunshite, if you know what I mean. Man, talk about killing a franchise. Nintendo launched the NES with Super Mario Bros. 1, then launched the SNES with Super Mario World, then launched the N64 with Super Mario 64. All three of those games could easily be considered one of the 3 greatest games in History. Personally, I rank Super Mario World (SNES) as the best game of all time, and when I played Super Mario 64, that was a dream of all dreams. Over time however, now that the whole 3D thing has worn off, I don't look at Super Mario 64 in the same way that I look at Mario World or Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros. 3.....but Super Mario 64 is definitely an all time classic, and a game that basically defined 3D platformers.

Then we got Mario Sunshine. Man, talk about a dissapointment. First, it was the first Mario game not to launch with a new Nintendo home console, and second, it SUCKED!!!!.

Still, I'm sure there are 25 games that suck much worse than Mario Sunshine, but yeah, Mario Sunshine deserves alot of bad pub.

I don't mean to be rude but those of you nominating ET as the worst game of all time are pretty narrow minded. ET ain't great but it ain't aweful either and there are plenty of worse Atari 2600 games out there, Cosmic Corridor and Skin Diver come to mind as well as Racquetball. I haven't nominated any games yet as I haven't decided yet. All of you need to go through your games and really truly find a bad game.

Actually, I've spent a lot of time trying to find the Worst Game Ever. At any given time, I'll be in the middle of one or two really horrible games that I started playing just because they have such a bad rep. I see a lot of games mentioned on this list that are average, or slightly below average but not horrible. A horrible game is a rare thing the the present market. The dollar amount necessary to develop and market any current gen game is enough so that a developer generally won't release unplayable crud that was much more prevalent during the 8-bit era.

To paraphrase, it only took one or two stoned developers to churn out Heroes of the Lance (NES) but an entire company had to be staffed suicidally depressed and huffing pain fumes to make something like Drake of the 99 Dragons.

Anybody who thinks overhyped or disapointing franchise games are the "worst ever" really needs a good education in the depths of crappy gaming. Start with Elf Bowling for the DS.

Altered Beast MD
anything with John madden in the title for any console.

Shame on your brother! First off, Altered Beast was like the first ever Mega Drive game so you have to give it some slack, and it's actually a decent game. I can tell you one thing, if you played it in 1989, you wouldn't have been thinking that it was a crappy game.

As for John Madden, are you INSANE? Ok, we all hate E.A., and we are all tired of Madden games, but some of the best sports games in the history of sports games have Madden in the title. John Madden Football '93 for Genesis is clearly one of the best football games in the history of our planet. So please, don't disgrace something so pimp.

Of couse, we all have our opinions, and opinions aren't necessarily wrong or right, but I would have to say that yours is much closer to the side of wrong. DEAD WRONG! LOL

I'll admit E.T. is a piece of crap but neither it nor Pac-man are close to being the worst game on the 2600. Heck Cosmic Corridor is at leeast playable.

Worst game for the 2600? Springer. Try that one out on your VCS or emulator.

I hope action 52 is in the top ten

I second this.

I'm seriously open-minded to any game that crosses my path, but man, after I played this piece of electronic trash, it really makes me wonder if the "programmers" were even trying. Just...wow.

I know there's a few more I can think of..I may create a list as well.

action 52 will have to be in the top 5 or 10, if not #1 for this list to be legitimate at all. Shaq Fu needs to be on this list as well.

I think Cool World for the NES is pretty bad, not even sure what the hell is going on in that game. E.T. is aggrivating but everybody knows its not that great so its almost pointless to even list it. I'm not really fond of any WWE/WWF games either, they all end up being the same thing. If you want to beat the hell out of people, DOA4 is probably the way to go.

Super Mario Sunshine was a disappointment but at least it was as bad as the dismal Mario is Missing.

I seen a lot deserving lousy games so far but I pray to God that none of you actually played these duds before:

Blade Eagle 3D (SMS)
Color A Dinosaur (NES)
Dam Busters (Colecovision)
Electronic Table Soccer (Odyssey2)
Fisher Price Firehouse Rescue (NES)
Gun Boat (TurboGrafx-16)
Rise of the Robots (3D0)
Slot Racers (Atari 2600)

Hylide

even my neighbor who at the time claimed to enjoy "any game no matter how bad" came to hate this game after 10 minutes

aahhh...yes...cybermorph. I remember that christmas as my mom tried to suprise me with a brand new Jaguar system. I remember how the only place that had them was in NY so she had it specialy shipped. I remember the excitement as my dad hooked up the system to my small and ancient TV set in my room. I remember the feeling of putting Cybermorph into the Jaguar and getting ready for my head to explode from the new 64 bit intense and amazeing experence I was going to have in the next few minutes.

I tried to love the game....i really did, i was young at the time and perhaps i was just expecting something to revolutionary from the game...and indeed the system.

does cybermorph belong in a top 20 worst games of all time list? probibly not. is cybermorph in my personnal top 20 worst games of all time? without a doubt.

oh yhea, did i mention Hylide.

Where's Waldo is pretty bad.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies for N64 may not quite rank on this list, but everyone I know who has played it would probably think so. It's redeeming quality is that it is hilarious to watch somebody play it for the first time, especially somebody who angers easily.

For every high profile game considered bad there are probably 10 others that are much worse that are less known. This is a hard thing to measure because I could go and program a game with my basic programming knowledge and it would be very bad. It's like trying to rank the lowest mountains in the world, or something like that.

There is one little indigestible wad for the NES that nobody ever seems to mention, and its name is Castelian. I rented this one when I was a lad and I still can't get the bad taste out of my mouth. If you can't even program a game to play music and sound at the same time, you should go back to cram school.

Sending along my list with this one at the top...
