View Full Version : Should i sell my PS2?

I am going to be selling lots of stuff this weekend, But i am debating wether i should sell my PS2 or not.
I do not play my PS2 very much, there are not many games on it that interest me (That are exclusives, i buy all multiplatform games on xbox) And i thought i could sell it this weekend to a vendor at a flea market.
My PS2 is a original front loading model, Serial number 50001, wich makes more reason to sell it.
I would only sell the system, the online adapter, one controller (One i bought form a yard sale for $1), the hookups, and 4 of the games i have for it, but keep everything else, wich isn't much - The box, 2 controllers, manuals, network startup disk, memory cards, and 3 games, Maybe 4 if i don't find burnout 3.
I would buy a toploading PS2 later on.
Why would i want to do this?
Well, i want to fund the purchase of 3 more arcade machines. They cost $50 each and need work, But i feel it's worth it, since i'm planning to rent two of them to a bowling alley or arcade once they are fixed.
Plus, i enjoy my Xbox and gamecube a lot more, and i'm someone who doesn't like sony very much.
What do you think?

I sold my original PS2 and picked up a slimline about 6 months ago.
If there isn't anything on the PS2 that you play often, I'd say go for it. The arcade machines seem like an opportunity you will need to jump on or lose, but PS2's can be had very easily.
I had to buy my slimline right away because I need my Gran Turismo fix daily, but that's me.
Go for it, Arcade Machines > PS2

I agree with Wangan. A PS2 can be had whenever. If you have the opportunity to grab some arcade cabs that you want and you need to raise some quick capital, then selling the PS2 seems like a no brainer. Just buy a slimline some time down the road if you want to get back into PS2 gaming.

When I read the headline, I thought no, but then I read you situation, and I think you should go for the arcade machines. As it's been said, you can get a toploader (and I think you should, they're better then frontloaders) later on, and the arcade machines wont be around. Keep what you want, and go for it.

umm if you do then sell it to ME
seriously and in all respect I cannot comprehend how any gamer doesnt like Playstation 2 with the 100s of AAA game titles of all just about every genre imaginable available from both the PS1 and PS2 library.
Plus there is still FF12 and God of War 2 to come just to name a couple.
But hey thats just me ;)
I liked my Xbox 1 also but both it and my Gamecube collected dust while my Playstation 2 had constant play.
Also the Xbox 1 is dead ,and has about half of the PS2s current gen has to offer, hell even the Gamecube still has Super Paper Mario and the LEGEND OF ZELDA:Twilight Princess coming for it even though Nintendo had No Gamecubes on floor display at E3.

Well, now that i have the encouragement, It looks like i'll be selling my PS2. But, where should i sell it.. I was going to sell it at the flea market, But i don't expect to get much for it there..
The thought has crossed my mind that i could sell it here, but i'm kind of skeptical about it.

The only reason I keep my PS2 is because I never owned a PS1, and I use it to play PS1 games.
Then I read that there are good PS1 emulators out there, and I was like "well, guess I don't need this, really." The only PS2 games I really enjoy are the Sly Cooper games.
Chuck the thing, and play your PS1 games on emulator.

Well as a repairer of PS2 consoles Id tell you to piss that
console off as soon as you can as the 5000 series have the
worst laser arms and lens in them and cant fixed if there is
a problem for anywhere near the cost of the older ps2 consoles

WOW
lots of hatin on PS2 in this thread.
Is this more of a fallout since the Gamecube sold not even a third of what the PS2 sold overall with "last" gen?
seriously Im curious about this since Im well aware than there are MANY Nintendo fans on this forum and Im not trying to flame I respect at least 90% of the fellow gamers on here Im just very curious is all.
I just dont get it I mean isnt this forum about the GAMES more than anything else?
Well my friends the Playstation 2 has the GAMES no matter how much denial may go on in this well informed board.

Yes. In your position, go for the arcade games. I am shocked you still have a working original model of that number. You are making the right choice because if a system doesn't have the type of games that you don't want then get a rid of it.

Not in my case and don't hate the ps 2 and I am not biased. I am gc and ps 2 owner. Your claim of ps 2 has the games can be true in some instances. It is based a game player like for genre's. I only have a ps 2 because of rpgs, classic game collections, a few nascar games and metal slug games for the most part. I don't have the amount of games for ps and gc together compared to my other game collections like the 2600/7800,nes,genesis/32x,and ps 1. Part of the reason for me is the genre's I like aren't in nowdays on current systems.
I looked at what the topic creator is having the system for and the number of the ps 2 with the options involved.

Well, i don't Hate the PS2, But i don't use it often, There are few games on it that interest me. I'm not attacking anyone, And i can respect that you like the PS2, But for the most part i buy multiplatform games on the xbox, and i don't see many PS2 exclusives that interest me. Stuff like Jak and daxter, Ratchet and clank, crash bandicoot... Just feel... Empty to me, no offense.
I could like the Sly Cooper games if i ever played them (Meaning in a way that i haven't played them yet) And i like ape escape, But i don't like sports games unless they are like skateboarding games or snowboarding games, And i get those on the xbox.
Anyway, back to the main subject..
I got this PS2 in 2004, And rarely used it, and when i did use it i kept it on the default settings. Plus i took care of it, And since i don't smoke, That prolonged the system life, Aswell as my own.

I didn't think the thread was about PS2 love or hate -- just what's the best decision for this situation.
Plenty o people on these boards love the PS2. (Me being one of them) I'd bet a majority own all 3 platforms of this gen (not counting the 360 yet).

That is exactly what this topic is about, - "Should i sell my PS2 to fund for 3 arcade machines for $50 each plus a $15 delivery?"
And, Sabre2922, Did you read my topic before posting? It does not seem like you did.

I say go for it, I sold my xbox off after I got my 360 to help with the money I spent on it. Besides, it is not like you can't pick up one of the slim models on the cheap later on down the road (that is what I have, and I use it for pretty much just the Sly Cooper series and watching the odd DVD when I am in my spare room).

No. The PS2 is two consoles in one that lets you play both PS1 and 2 videogames. How many's that? 3000 games?
It's worth keeping.
If you're worried about the stability of your first wave PS2 then get rid of it. If it craps out, you're in for a new PS2 anyways. It's nothing special and you can pick up a brand new slimline anytime.
Sony-wise I'm living with a very mint PSX 9001 because I'm on a PSX kick these days. I'll grab a PS2 later to play GT4 and the new Polyphony bike game, but there's no rush.

I love my Ps2, it's tied with SNES as my fav system of all time. If your Ps2 just sits there then maybe you should sell it. But that's what I did with my Xbox a year or two ago and now I want an Xbox back.
The same might happen to you with Ps2, you may think you'll never play it but then that one game comes out that makes you want it back. Like they say, you want what you can't have.
It seems like Sony is very much hated now then ever and I remember when the Ps1 first came out it was very popular and about everyone forgot about Nintendo. It's funny how things change.
I know most people don't like Sony's practice's and such but I go with what system has the most games I play and as long as Sony doesn't use it's profits to fund some type of genocide or it's gaming libraries take a nose dive I will stick with them.

I think it depends entirely on what the three arcade games are, what conditions they are in, and if they're original cabinets or conversion cabinets. For three original, decent games - go for it. For three hacked up JAMMA conversions of some generic 1991 beat-em-up games - save yourself the effort.

Sell it. It looks like the investment you could make will be better for you than a system that's just sitting there.
Especially since it's the problem-prone model.

To me selling PS2
Is like selling an Atari or Super nintendo.
It makes no sense. All 3 of these are "must have" systems.

But...
If an opportunity presented itself to you, which would be unavailable at later time, and was only obtainable if you sold one of those three "must have" systems, I don't see why you wouldn't sell it.
"must have" usually translates into "easily obtainable", and it rings particularly true with the PS2(and the other systems you mentioned).
I still say sell the beast. You'll always be able to find another, and a better model to boot.

I'd take option c:
- Keep my 3 favorite consoles.
- Use my credit card to buy the arcade machines.
- Work extra hours to pay off that balance.
