What does a wi-fi connection require me to do or buy.

Do I need to be in a specific area? Do I need to buy some $100 gizmo to connect to my PC? What kind of internet connection do I need to have?

I just want to know how to get all the downloadable goodness.

You'll need a wireless router and some kind of high speed connection I'm guessing.

Are they going to be putting an ethernet port in the Wii too? Wireless modems/routers can be a pain in the ass to set up and not always reliable. It'd be nice if Nintendo would include a wired option for people who don't want to deal with that when trying to get their Wii online.

Wii will have built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity allowing communication over the Internet via wireless networking. Connectivity with Nintendo DS utilizes the Wi-Fi capability. Nintendo has stated that Wii will have a standard interface for Wi-Fi. An optional USB adapter will permit network connectivity via wired Ethernet as well.

Ugly answer, I know. That is from the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Revolution

No ethernet. I am shocked to be honest. One more way they are cutting costs I guess. No ethernet, no 5.1, not HDTV. I sure hope it is gonna be $200.

They already have a USB connector avaliable that allows the DS to go online through your existing computer set-up. I'm fairly sure that the Wii would be compatible with this device as well because it uses the same wireless protocol as the DS. It's only $39.99 and is fully compatable. This may be a good idea to use one even if you have a Wi-Fi router cause the DS (and I'm assuming the Wii as well) has problems with some routers. I had to trick my router to give my DS access. Basicly I had to axe WEP security, so I turned the broadcast on the router name off and gave if a name specific to us here at the house. To connect to the network you need to know the networks name. Haven't had a problem since, but it was a bitch to figure out.

Oh, so I guess it won't support WPA either. I'll have to get the adapter or do what you did with your network.

Odd. My DS works at home no problems.

I have an AirPort Express. I use 128 bit WEP.
